View Full Version : Can avi be put straight to back-up disc?
Can an AVI file (or any other for that matter), be burned straight to disc?
Someone once told me that if it plays ok in WindowsMedia Player, then it doesn't need converting.
Is this true?

Only if you're intending to play it back only on a PC.
If you're wanting it to play on a standard DVD player, then you'll need to convert it first (do a search on here - it's been asked loads of times)!
Sorry about that then
And thanx
melthebell 22-06-2005, 18:46 any files on your computer can be burnt as data onto cd / dvd and either copied back to where they were, or run off the cd / dvd
avis / mpgs / mp3s / wmvs etc etc will all play on your computer, with the right codecs installed.
if you want to view on a dvd player as has already been stated you have to burn as mpg, which means you need to re encode the avi either using an encoder like tmpgenc or nero encodes avis before burning.but its not very good at it.
also some dvd players now play divx files so dont even need re encoding as mpgs.

...and there is a decent DivX DVD player in Maplins at the minute for £39.99.

On a slightly diferent note: (not worth starting another thread)
I've converted an MP3 audio album to WAV and burn't it to a CD. It plays fine on my home stereo but the one at work is having none of it. It won't even recognise the disk.
Is this because of the format or is it because the work's stereo is an older one?
Sorry for jumping on your thread 5star

Hey- you sorted the problems out yet.
And I meant- to play it on a DVD player you fo have to convert it to DVD disc format to do so.. you just need to play the .avi file in windows media player to test it to make sure the sound is timed properly with the video before conversion to DVD, if you get my drift- (apologies, I am quite crap at explaining things properly!)
Then convert it to DVD using the program I told you about.
Give us a PM if you need any more help mate.

I would have thought it was just a case of the older cd player not like cd-r discs, most cd writing software creates perfectly fine audio cds (assuming you did that rather than just write the data files as wav!)... Car stereos used to be notorious for not coping with cd-r, but I dunno if they've got better lately. Rewriteable discs are even worse! :)
