View Full Version : Good place to meet people?
slarty 22-06-2005, 06:37 PM Hi,
I'm 33 and suddenly find myself living alone in Sheffield,
Anybody know any good places to meet new people socially,
I hear lots about the Devonshire cat but I’m wondering if that’s just a student hangout? (Not that there's anything wrong with students! been there done that!) but I’m looking for more of a social thing or club rather than somewhere to just beer it up!
Any ideas?
benclements2 22-06-2005, 06:59 PM There are many good bars/eateries on Ecclesall road, for all age groups. Crystal Bar in town is excellent, although it fills up with pretentious idiots late on and the bar staff are somewhat up themselves (but it is REALLY nice!). As for clubs - I dunno what to say! Unfortunately I find Sheffield a bit of a let down when it comes to clubs, not unless you're 16 and then GC1 is the place to be or the leadmill if you're a student. I've heard loads of people say Kingdom is good - but I tend to refer to it as Mingdom.
robbie 22-06-2005, 07:00 PM there is a forum meet every Wednesday and Sunday. see the offical notices bit in this forum. Its meant to be a mixed group but you are guaranteed to meet some "characters"
:D

Welcome to the Forum....
Why not come down to the Woodseats meet on Friday 24th June or 1st July we are mostly 30's :hihi:
In fact the Dev Cat meets have forum members attending of all ages too!!
ddolly 22-06-2005, 07:33 PM What about joining a class in something or a sporting activity? Walking group, ect? I also hear that 'Spice' is pretty good for meeting new people, sounds a bit pricey tho!
slarty 22-06-2005, 07:59 PM Yeah, I sent for the Spice info pack, it does look really good but hmmm yes a bit on the pricey side, maybe I would join if I could convince friends to join too.
I’ve seen links for the Sheffield walking group too, I might give that a go it does appeal.
So how do I spot forum members at the meets, just look for a bunch of nutters propping the bar up?!

Usually, there are threads posted about the regular meets in Notices and Events, and most of the people who are going post that they doing so. Why not PM one of them, e.g. Kristian, letting them know what time you are likely to be arriving, and they can arrange for someone to meet you at the door. Basically, at the Dev Cat, you can't really miss the SF crowd ~ they sit very near the door usually.
I met them for the first time last week, and was made very welcome (even though I'm a southerner:wink: ), and had a brilliant time.
slarty 22-06-2005, 11:05 PM That’s really helpful, thanx
I'll probably pop along to the next meet,
If they even welcome southerners then they must be a friendly bunch!!!
:)

ddolly 22-06-2005, 11:57 PM Hey slarty,
Let me know if you decide to go on Sunday, I've been toying with the idea for a few months but always bottle it at the last minute. It's just the idea of walking into a room full of strangers, I'm a bit short sighted so its bad enough trying to find me mates in the pub, let alone not knowing who I'm looking for. If a few of us 'newbies' go together might make it a little less scarey?
slarty 23-06-2005, 11:03 AM That sounds like a really good idea would be good to know I’m not the only SF newbie in the pub and I wouldn't be stood on my own wondering what I’m doing there.... there would be at least two of us stood wondering what we're doing there!!!
...But alas I’ve just been sent by work on a course at Milton Keynes next week and need to check myself into the hotel on Sunday :(
Bah! Bad timing!
ddolly 23-06-2005, 12:12 PM Milton Keynes ay? You lucky fella! They seem to have hidden the hotels (and houses for that matter) quite well, so be sure to take a map.. I once had hours of fun trying to find a pub in that place.
Nevermind about this week, give me a shout if you're up for it another week tho :)
slarty 23-06-2005, 12:41 PM Got my map printed off already, I’m just putting red crosses on the pubs!!
Can’t wait! The joys of sitting in a hotel room for a week!
My hotel is just across the road from Xscape, hmmm do I feel brave enough to try snow boarding.... probably not! lol! :P
I'll drop you a PM when i get back if your still up for trying out the Devonshire or where ever the meets at!
ddolly 24-06-2005, 07:23 PM Sounds Good. Good luck in the Keynes!
slarty 28-06-2005, 10:10 AM Hmmm, I see what you mean about hiding the pubs!
Maybe they've hidden them to prevent snowboarding whilst under the influance?!:loopy:
ok, i'm suposed to studying! back to it! ...as if!
