My wife was a school cook in the 70's and she remembers nearly 20 pounds of cheese was used in the cheese pies for 180 children. The days before cuts,no wonder it tasted strong
God how could anyone have liked schooldinners? I have a vivid memory of Miss Lomas forcing me to eat fish pie at Stannington Infant school, if I was American I'd sue them, for all the food problems I have had since
poppypoppy 13-02-2009, 14:21 Mmmmm i remember the cheese flan too and theres an ex school cook as my moms neighbour!! asked her many times about the cheese flan but she said she hated it...probably due to having to cook it on so many occasions....the pastry i think was wholemeal too?? Does anyone remember having mashed potatoes..veggies and i forgot what meat..but then they poured lashings of tomato gravy over it..i expect looking back now it was tomato soup!! But at the time it was lovely...mmmmmmm....memories....
thanks for the memories craig, you sound like your about my age (almost 40 :help:)remember most of the clubs etc you mentioned but didnt actually go to any cos my dad was quite strict and didnt let me out much!!!!
My worse school dinner had to be luncheon meat fritters!!!!:(:(:(:(:(:gag:
Hated em so much, but in them days there wasnt a alternative, but sometimes dinner lady would do you a fried egg instead!!!
cherry t 13-02-2009, 23:08 Just come across this thread. My wife has been going on about school dinner cheese pie/flan for weeks. Never tasted a flan like it. Surely someone must have a recipe or some idea how it was made. Cheese flan, chips and beans were my favourite!!
im 45 aldam, went to beaver hill in 78 , loved it, on the subject of cheese for this flan, you can buy 2 strong cheeses nowadays, ones called seriously strong and the others called tnt ,, theyre nowt compared to 1978 cheese flan,,,,,,,, who has the recipe,,,,,,,,,,,,,someone cooked it,,,, c, mon show yourself
Chelle01 13-02-2009, 23:24 I used to adore my school dinners. I was known to have "seconds" and "thirds" of cheese pie, absolutely gorgeous. Mmmm butterscotch tart with a swirl of cream, Manchester tart, a thick wedge of strawberry mousse, a "brick" of chocolate pudding with chocolate custard, chocolate "wagon wheels", lovely meat pies, creamy mash, cabbage, fried fish, cheesy croquettes, cooked ham, beetroot and the chips, oh god the chips!, you could smell them cooking and I would nearly faint with mouthwatering hunger, they were luscious.
cherry t 14-02-2009, 00:01 Hi
Just put "school dinners cheese flan" in the search bar and found a thread on the UKTV food website giving the recipe for cheese flan. Can't work out how to link it into this post tho. Will keep trying.
Try typing this in until I have worked it out.

As a bonus you even get the recipes for cornflake tart and artificial cream.
Good luck!
almost forgot , what happened to the snacks at breaktimes, dundee buiscits, teacakes, the crisps which i think were called puffs, theye were hollow and came in very strong flavours, and the mini bottles of milk with a tiny straw
mmmm cheese pie chips and beans, the only day I stayed for dinner at school.
the good all days bring back cheese flam chips and beans and far afters lemon meringue pie
School cheese pie, with the bits of onion in, was indeed legendary, although any of you who frequented GG's may remember Irene's cheese flan/pie, that was pretty good to.
The pink custard was probably invented in order to 'tame' the flap-jack. Because if you were stupid enough to have school flap-jack without some sort of bonding agent, IE the pink custard, as soon as you even approached it with a spoon it would shatter into a thousand pieces and disperse itself all over your mates.
On the subject on 'things-of-old'. How many of you sat on the last bus out of Pond Street, 11:30 I think, watching that pink neon sign up on the gallery outside 'The Cinecenta' spiralling round and round, waiting for the inspectors whistle to signal the start of the bus race.
Oh Happy Days
Chris
Sweatshopboy 16-02-2009, 01:45 Sago! not the minute sago balls you get in tins now, but the real McCoy they served us at skoyal in the fifties, yer proper frog spawn, delicious! but the best sago ever is what they served in the Siemans Canteen, English Steel Corporation, Brightside Lane, in the early sixties the balls were as big as marbles it was superb, wish I could taste the like now.

Wow chips and beans for school dinners. When I was eating junior school dinners in the 1960's it was always fresh vege, carrots, peas, cabbage and a million and one ways with boiled potatoes. My favourite dinners were meat and potato pie and stew and dumplings. My favourite pudding jam sponge and custard. Mmmmmmmm.
i,m sure the cheese pie at westways had bits if bacon in it as well. gorgeous!
Tallulah 05-08-2009, 20:57 Went to Brook, loved the cheese pie, my favourite. Have never had anything like it since I left, nothing comes close. Is there a dinner lady out there who can give us the recipe???
But didn't you feel cheated on those days you had soup before a main course which meant NO PUDDING!! .
But oh-Treacle sponge and custard..If "seconds" was called on TS&C you would kill to get to those steel trays first...
Seconds were always called on carrots though at Morley Street and only good old John Guite would put his hand up...I remember his plate just being a curved orange dome.He will never need glasses that lad!
I loved school dinners both at primary and secondary-I remember always being hungry.
My first experience of kidney...In thse days the dinner ladies were very keen on kids eating all that was in front of them and I was spotted putting it on someone else's plate..It's the only time my ma ever went to school to argue my case..
However,I could never understand those who went home for dinner or brought sandwiches..

Soup for school dinner!!!!! NO PUDDING. OMG. When I was eating school dinners it was a case of lots of lovely stodge to fill up growing kids. In those days school dinners were obligatory as we weren't allowed out of the school grounds and we were so in awe of the strict teachers that most of us stayed put.
