AWAY WIN AT BRAMALL LANE EARNS WEDNESDAY THE AWARD
The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week, the F&C Investments Performance of the Week Award should go to Sheffield Wednesday following their excellent 2-1 away win at Bramall Lane, in the Coca-Cola Championship on Saturday 7th February 2009.
Wednesday manager Brian Laws will receive a specially engraved crystal football in a presentation to be screened on Sky Soccer Saturday on 14th February 2009.
The steel city derby resulted in Sheffield Wednesday completing a season double over the Blades for the first time in 95 years and their first win at United in over 40 years.
It was Marcus Tudgay who was the hero as his stunning 25-yard strike gave Sheffield Wednesday all three points in a pulsating game.
Wednesday went in front within a minute as Tommy Spurr hammered home Michael Gray's pull back.
However, United were level as new loan signing Arturo Lupoli headed in off the bar less than four minutes later.
The visitors then won it as Tudgay’s shot sailed past goalkeeper Paddy Kenny.
Brian Laws was delighted and proud with the result;
"I'm very proud of the players and the supporters. They haven't had a lot to shout about, but when we win these games it makes up for a lot.
"I'm delighted for everybody concerned. It's not just about the new directors, or the chairman, it's about everybody who works for Sheffield Wednesday.
"They have been down in the dumps for a fair few years and one thing that means a lot to them is these games."
