My Nan lived on Helen Road, it ran off Greenland Road and was next to Coleford Road. Just around the bottom corner was a shop my Nan called "Teddys" which was a grocers shop I think.

We used to walk up to the old Darnall terminus through "the Rec" which I seem to remember may have been a small army base during the war as I can vaguely remember seeing tanks in a garage in there, or I may have dreamt that bit!!

My nan took me to the Stores which was the Co-op I think, and was on a road that we walked along to get to the terminus.

The houses on Helen Road were the usual 2 up 2 down terraces of 5 with a yard at the back and a toilet at the end of the yard. There was a motor business of some sort at the back of the yard. I remember a big garage of sorts with vehicles in. Can anyone enlighten me with this?

I would be interested to hear from anyone who had family on Helen Road, my Nan lived at number 76 which was in the first yard on the left as you walked up from Greenland Road

The houses were purpose built to house army personnel, previously it was just a tip where a fair was held annually, next to it was a recreation ground, opposite to which was a chip shop which backed on to Darnall Cemetery. A cousin of mine lived on Helen Road just down on the right hand side, there was a large arch opening through to the back yard. He had seven sons. The Co-op was on Craven Road.

Many years ago an aunt and uncle of mine used to live on Helen Road. Their surname was webster and my mum used to stay with them. She got married from my aunts house in 1961 and got married at Darnall Church.

the milk man with the horse is alive & kicking, his name is fred he lived on industry road,(well into his 80's now) shows that hard work dont kill you, out in all weather & lifting those heavy crates. there was two great chippies one at the bottom of industry road, that lady took over the chippie opposite the duke of york, the other was opposite the rec. When i first lived down greenland road there was no bus depot (that was knocked down for B&Q)

I knew the Rileys by sight they were a bit older than me. my OH knows Keith he has a shop on attercliffe rd. that has tools & machines called Rileys,(there is another tool shop)

hathechewed: not same milkman uncle was married and live a bit further up the road, he was a co-op man.
tasha: it was craven road you would have walked to the terminus.
Tanfield : i remember Teds shop it had every thing we needed in those days, it would have been shut down by H&S & food safety as it was scruffy, wounder what happened to them ,they were just shutting up when i was rehoused.

Fred is a friend of mine....not only did he deliver the milk but also had a second job of window cleaning so yes, it does show that hard work is OK for you. All his family are friends of my family. I lived on Industry Road and our long garden ended on Helen Road. When I was researching my family tree I found out that my great grandparents and siblings lived on Helen Road. Made me feel a little strange to think that years before my ancestors were walking the same streets as I did years later......

I wonder if this man used to deliver papers on Sundays, I used to help deliver paper with a horse and cart and that horses name was Dolly, but I can't remember the mans name.
