We are relocating to Sheffield in August and have a 3-year-old son. In order to minimise the disruption for him we wanted to get him into a good infant school that is attached to a good primary school. We have tried the council for advice and information who didn't seem to think that this option was available!
Does anyone know where we can get some good advice or does anyone have any recommendations? Also, what can you tell us about pre/after school care in the area for working parents?
We are looking to move to the South West of the city.
Thanks

There are a few schools on the SW of the city which have nursery places, infant and junior, but many nursery places are for half days only. If what you really need is daycare, there are a number of private daycare nurseries in Nether Edge. Apart from Sharrow, there are relatively few funded or subsidised out of school/ after school projects in the SW of the city.
I'd generally advise you to look at infant and junior schools before you move here: they vary enormously, and it can be hard to get a place in a popular school if you are outside the catchment area. Commitment to multicultural education, league tables or other stuff may influence the kind of place you favour, but the predominantly white, predominantly middle class schools tend to be oversubscribed, while schools with a more socially, culturally and economically mixed intake often have places.
Bear in mind that even three year olds grow pretty fast, and your choice of primary school may affect the choices (easily) available to you for secondary schooling. If you are planning to be here in the long term, you may wish to look at catchment areas for secondary schools as well.
I would recommend Woodseats Nursery and Primary School as that is a lovely school and has the nursery building in the school grounds including the infant and junior blocks so it will take him from 3 to 10+!!
I know coz my sons went there and one shortly due to start September!!

There is also an afterschool club and there is a private day nursery down the road which also offers services including picking your child up from the school etc...!!
PS welcome to the forum....

Thank you both. That's a great start. Will definitley come down and check out Woodseats, if there are any others would love to hear so that we can spend some time looking at schools that have been recommended to us rather than looking for them in the dark!

St Marys at walkley (Burgoyne Rd) have an attatched nursery, and westways up at crookes also have an attached nursery. not sure if Westways takes three year olds though .
Lowedges has a really good foundation unit with excellent resources and provision. It is attached to the primary school and is the fourth most improving school in the country. Even if you don't live in the area, check out the school.

If you want to get into an infants' school in the south-west of Sheffield, you will need to live in the playground, buy a house for about 500% of what it is worth and put up with your child sweating in an overcrowded classroom. But it's up to you!
