View Full Version : Smoking carriages on trains rant...

I recently got a train from Sheffield to Edinburgh and was given the option to sit in the smoking carriage.

'Great' I thought. I'm not a heavy smoker at all, but I do enjoy the occasional ciggy and thought it might break up the four hour journey.

Can't believe how niave I was...

I'm a very polite occasional smoker, so I won't have a fag if there's any danger of it annoying anybody around me. As I sat on the station platform waiting for the train, I remember wondering whether anybody would actually be smoking in the smoking carriage (???) and hoping that I could have a ciggy without blowing smoke on any other passengers.

The reality was somewhat different, and I was forced out of the carriage by an impending asthma attack (I don't have athsma) less than an hour later. Not only was the entire carriage chain smoking, but people kept popping in from other carriages, having a fag, and then leaving.

It was gross.

There's no real reason for this thread, other than to have a rant and hear other opinions on smoking carriages, but on the plus side I haven't had a fag since (3 days ago), so maybe I'm gonna give up!!!

In all fairness if you sit in a train carriage designated for smoking for 4 hours what do you expect.

neither can I, people smoking in the smoking carriage, you'll never guess what they do in the restuarant carriage.

It seems quite a day for smoking threads.

I didn't realise they still had smoking carrages on trains.

While I can always sympathise with anyone made ill (or even uncomfortable) by passive smoking you really should have suspected what it was like before deciding to sit in that carrage. People saying they enjoy 'a fag' is like people who say they like 'a drink'. In reality it is never just one fag but several over a relatively short time span. Times that by the number of people in the carrage and you can imagian what an unregulated smoking environment is like.

As they say, it does exactly what it says on the tin.

Yeah, okay, I admitted I was being a tad niave before.

It was usch a tiny smoky carriage though - I can't understand how anyone would want to sit in it, even smokers. You'd have to be a really heavy niccotine adict to put up with that for four hours.

And the way other smokers kept popping in for a fag and then leaving seemed a bit selfish - you can't have it both ways!!!!

Apparently they're gonna be banned in August anyway.

And at least it's done me a favour - might try to give the old cancer sticks the boot.

On a similar theme, something I've noticed when I visit my parents from time to time in Edinburgh, is how much more people smoke up there than seem to here in Sheffield. The difference is really quite noticeable.

JBee - perhaps you found yourself in a carriage full of citizens of Edinburgh, who were getting back into practice for the heavy smoking required in their home town! :D (Only joking....)

But the smoking carriage has the advantage of no children! I know what I choose!
