View Full Version : Where is woodhouse washlands nature reserve? soccermom 22-06-2005, 13:11 Does anyone know where this is? Ive had a look on the OS map and the sheffield A-Z but cant find it. Does anyone know what road its off? Ive already tried he Sheffield wildlife trust website. foxy 22-06-2005, 13:21 don't know the place, but this has a vague description... http://www.rotherhamunofficial.co.uk/parks/naturereserves/woodhouse.htm Norbert 22-06-2005, 14:06 I think if you park at the Princess Royal Pub on Retford Rd you can get to it from there. Or on nearby Furnace Lane. I used to think it was down Beighton Rd from Woodhouse but I think that's Beighton Marsh which is part of the same area (River Rother floodplain) but cut off from Woodhouse Washlands by the train line. There are two excellent leaflets about the washlands available from somewhere, one on the history, one on the natural history of the area. Hels 22-06-2005, 14:14 Woodhouse is a very under-estimated area of Sheffield! If you head out of Sheffield on the old A57 (Retford Road) there are a few places in Woodhouse Mill you can park up. Princess Royal is as good a place as any. You can also park somewhere near the Water Regulater which is very close to the Pub. Furnace Lane is usually a bit congested with parked cars etc so may be best avoided. But there is a map/noticeboard at the entrance to the wetlands just up on the left up Furnace Lane. Sometimes they have guided walks and evening walks there - but not sure where you'd find out about them? playman 22-06-2005, 17:56 Why not contact the east ranger team on 0114 2751176 and they will give you all the info you will need. Beelzebub 23-06-2005, 08:54 Wood house washlands is indeed behind the Princess Royal pub there is a car park just up Furnace Lane / Station Road, just up from Purdy's DIY shop It is not really that accessable or interesting unless you go on a Ranger guided walk. The reason being that two protected species are there, these being the Great Crested newt and the harvest mouse and large areas and the ponds were inacessable by fences to protect certain areas the last time we went. If its just a local nature reserve that you want to visit try Shirebrook near the bottom of the Mosborough Parkway it is great, and quite large. alchresearch 23-06-2005, 11:53 Treeton Dyke has more to see and do than the Washlands. However, now that the Trans-Pennine Trail is complete, it's a wonderful route for a bike ride down to Rother Valley. |
