View Full Version : Ties - do we really need em?
I was wondering what you guys thing about ties. Apparently all civil servants may soon be tieless as described in this article (http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,3604,1511569,00.html).
I personally can see many similarities between the tie and the noose. Maybe it is about time we got rid of this seemingly pointless appendage?
Office wear does seem to vary vastly between men and women. In my office, and in my previous job, all the blokes were suit and booted, with ties, but the women can get away with a smart casual look - skirts or trousers with a shirt, jumper or even T-shirt in the summer.
I'm a woman so I'm happy, but if I was a bloke with a noose around my neck I'd feel a bit cheated!
Yes, you can tell alot about a person by the tie the wear- and in negotiating you need every edge you can :D
Plus it just looks smart- if it was upto me i would make suits compulsary for all men in my company.
i never wear a tie except to funerals, weddings and interviews. So i've voted with the girls.
Pretty pointless piece of clothing really.

I think the tie stems back from slavery and represents a leash and collar to indicate that you are willingly subservient to the rat race...
I would consider any company that still forced it's male employees to wear a tie to be very old fashioned.
you can see the tie evolving though the ages, it started as that frilly thing men used to wear.
evildrneil 22-06-2005, 12:28 Ties are a dangerous device which cuts of bloodflow to the brain causing increasing stupidity - just look at traditional tie wearers like politicians and managers...
Apollo_C 22-06-2005, 12:29 No ties! NO NO NO NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Demon spawn neck decoration *degenerates into general mumbling and swearing*
beansfeast 22-06-2005, 12:33 I hate wearing a tie, not because it's uncomfortable or looks smart. I like looking smart...
It's coz where I work the women can wear whatever they like and get away with jeans/trainers/t-shirts etc. I think it's totally unfair, I reckon the majority of us blokes would work better in a more comfortable environment anyway.

claim for sexual discrimination, it's been done before and cases won.
At a lot of companies there is nothing actually in your contract forcing you to wear a tie, when I checked my contract at a previous company I worked for there was no mention of what I had to wear so I started turning-up in jeans and a T-shirt, they were quite happy with that as long as I looked "presentable" if we had customers in.
redrobbo 22-06-2005, 12:58 Ties are a meaningless article of clothing - except they do occasionally spare your shirt from food stains.
From a health and safety point of view they are a nightmare around heavy machinery.

This made me laugh as I walked into work in my shorts and t-shirt yesterday to work in my civil service role.
Swan_Vesta 22-06-2005, 13:20 Today I turned up to work dressed pretty casually, I'm in jeans and a humourous T-shirt. However if I know we're having people in then I'll smarten up a bit and don a shirt and tie.
I like getting dressed up in a suit, shirt and tie. I look smart and dead good, my vanity does get in the way as I often pause at mirrors.
We should keep ties as then I'd not be able to have "reservoir dogs" moments in my head when suited and booted and walking along. dum dum dum dum dum dum dum .. dum dum dum. :D
