View Full Version : Who burnt Club XS down?
BertieBasset 22-06-2005, 10:38 Extract from BBC Online....
Crews tackle city nightclub fire
Part of Sheffield city centre had to be sealed off while firefighters tackled a blaze at a nightclub.
Crews were called to the XS club on Carlisle Street in the early hours of Wednesday after police officers spotted the fire.
The first floor of the club has been destroyed and the doors to a nearby electricity substation have also been affected by the flames.
Who burnt the club down, who who who....
Maybe I am getting old but.... I have never heard of this club has it been there long? what sort of club was it ?
chickmonk 22-06-2005, 10:44 Is it in Pitsmoor?
MuteWitness 22-06-2005, 10:45 I think it was the gay bar
MuteWitness 22-06-2005, 10:46 on carlise street not far from the wicker
BertieBasset 22-06-2005, 10:47 maybe someone was showing off and made a molotov cocktail.....:hihi:
It was the gay club just off carlise street, one of my mates played there- not good news!!
skyfitsboy 22-06-2005, 11:04 About time too, someone should have done it years ago!!:D
It was a dump, the fire probably started in the 2 inches of dust on everything.

.. and if they can build a new one in its place for the clientele that inhibated it .. // .. then perhaps good can come out of it
I doubt that will happen.
Usually when commercial entertainment buildings in sheffield "accidentally" catch fire, the takings aren't going particularly well and the site is soon sold for flats/houses.
E.G. Potters snooker at heeley green.

I think it will just get boarded-up and left to fall down, it's not like it's an ideal place to build a "luxury" housing block.
Club XS in Kettering is worse :| Not that I've ever been there of course :P
Says in the star tonight that the damage is minimal and its business as usuall...
sheffbag 22-06-2005, 15:15 perhaps it was done hoping that when they re-built it the council may see that it is on the most ridiculous roundabout in the whole of sheffield.
I know thats a crap statement but the roundabout outside XS is the worst i have ever come across (and i've tried to drive round Coventry!!!)
fnkysknky 22-06-2005, 21:33 Hope it's ok - I know the girl who lives on the 1st floor - best check if she's ok.
fnkysknky 22-06-2005, 21:39 Turns out it was just the function room upstairs and everything is fine. Good reporting by the BBC
I guess I shouldn't request Disco Inferno this weekend then?
redrobbo 22-06-2005, 22:04 Does this mean that the only gay bar in town will be Dempseys.....at least until the fire damage has been repaired?
Oh and Deavon - don't think you should request that other classic song either......."Come On Baby Light My Fire"!
:hihi:

no, it will be Dolly Parton and Liza Minelli as usual - homosexual's have notoriously bad taste in music... the same can't be said for eye liner and bitchy cutting acid quips.
I bet it was only started to get the firemen there! 'ooo look at his hose (snigger)'
Thank God there was no one in it at the time.
Could have been worse it could have been a Church or a Mosque
Is this like Who Shot J.R.?
OMG! The only gay bar in town is Dempsey's bloomin eck, enough to turn anyone straight!
What Sheffield needs is a really cool gay bar. Perhaps we could turn Trippets into the new Gay capital of Sheffield??!! OK, all you gay's Trippets it is then!
muddycoffee 23-06-2005, 09:14 While not strictly for "the gays"* I have noticed that R&Rs on London Road, Rutland Arms and Roebuck always seem to have a smattering of Gays inside. Maybe we are more integrated in this city than other cities where Gay Villages need to exist.
*sorry I couldn't help using the definite article after just seeing Daffith on L.Britain..

you mean the formely bright pink gay haunt that was the Emporeum and now the Roebuck. It was a gay pub but has moved away from that now.

The Rutland Arms has long been, what is known in the parlance, as a 'gay friendly' pub. Haven't noticed the Roebuck as such - though I occasionally have a drink in there (oh, just thought - does that make me the only gay in the pub? :hihi: )
Must check out the R&Rs on London Road - haven't had a pint in there.
coolwill2k 24-06-2005, 00:16 [i] homosexual's have notoriously bad taste in music...

Where did you get that from ?
SpiderPete 24-06-2005, 18:02 Must point out Xes DID NOT BURN DOWN.
Check their website out, only the top floor was damaged and they are open for business as usual.
So thankfully dumpseys isnt the only gay bar standing, if it was its suicide time ...
XES IS NOT BURNED DOWN (http://www.club-xes.com/portal/)
So is XS run by Gary and Simon who used to run the Albert before it got demolished ?
dan_999uk 27-06-2005, 17:02 I hear a petrol bomb was thrown through one of the first floor windows.
The owner(s) are apparently desperate to sell, and may now have to lower the asking price.
If they burned it down, where will all the dealers go?
SpiderPete 27-06-2005, 17:47 Yes Xes is run by Gary and Simon from The Albert days..... as I am sure everyone knows who goes down to Xes.

I've never been in XS, not that I'm tempted now after what I've heard, but I used to like the Albert.
Is The Bronx sauna still operating ? That used to be a nice pub too.
SpiderPete 29-06-2005, 20:22 Well thats one thing I never do, listen to rumours, I like to try these places out for myself, as you usually find people dont like a place and will slag it off forever.
I preferred the Albert as well, but Xes is a bigger place. It`s not exactly in a good location to get to either, unless you live close like me. I shall probably end up down there this Friday night. Its either Dempseys or Xes so only one winner, after I have done the str8 pubs first.
Must admit I have never heard of The bronx pub
