Whta a fantastic city we live in for this. The more open and mixed we are the better city we will be.

Sorry Robbie :(

Yes I'd have to agree about the greenery, I've never known a city quite like it for the wildlife, the city centre in bloom and just the sheer life of the place.

I love the peace gardens and the winter gardens and the parks galore. :)

The best thing about Sheffield is the people.

Sure, we have our fair share of undesirables (and I bet I fall into that category as far as some people are concerned), but Sheff has a nice, loosely tribal, thing going on.

There's a lot of love in this City, you can feel it in the stones man.

The Greenery in Sheffield is renowned nationwide. I've heard a lot of people say it's because the water here is so good. I think the reason it's renowned is because every bud picks up the good vibes thrumming round the city.

I think the main ones have been mentioned. I like that fact that Sheffield is an up and coming city. Ones the council remove their blinkers thinsg will get better.

It is very green for a city and the people are great and friendly. I also like the fact that we have a multi-cultural society although feel we need to integrate better or it could come back and bite us!

Its proximity to the Peak District;

Its parks and woodlands, including the Botanicals;

Its areas that resemble little villages, like Sharrowvale, Stannington, Devonshire Green and Broomhill;

Some of the old, large buildings around Broomhall;

Its pubs with still relatively cheap prices;

Its two footie clubs that could be going places next season;

Henderson's Relish;

Its location, slap bang in the middle of England;

Its Universities and standard of general Education;

It's a safe place to live and still feels safe (read it and weep Manchester); and

it's my hometown.

Where is all the greenery Sheffield is famous for?

When I get off the bus at the interchange every day, no matter which direction I walk up to the High Street I don't see a single tree, only huge blocks of concrete and blank facades hemming me into ugly streets. The moor, too, a huge concrete Jungle. Like Division Street, West Street, Leopold Street, Arundel Gate, Fargate, Pinstone Street, the whole of the city centre. Sheffield city centre is massively bereft of trees and greenery if anything! Have any of you actually been to Sheffield? Or seen trees? There is a bit of grass in the peace garden, and that is it! Oh and don't forget the university campus area - I lived on MAppin street for a year and missed greenery something chronic.

Then on my bus all the way up to Crookesmoor, again not a single tree. Then When I look out of the window across the Don Valley, there's no trees there either. And then the sun comes out and I think, Oooh I could go for a walk in the park - then I think Oh no I can't there isn't one for miles around.

Sheffield's greenery my arse. It's all a myth.

Sheffield is said to be the greenest city in England. I love the fact that you only have to travel for a few miles to be surrounded by countryside :)

Best thing in Sheffield though? Sheffielders! :P

I live (sort of) in sheffield and last night went for a walk to the resevoir (underbank) which is 5 mins from my front door, plenty of trees and greenery, i might have felt the need to live a bit further out than the city centre but im 'only' 50 mins on t'bus from sheff town centre,
only downside is that i have found it neccessary to have small drinks due to the legnth of the bus ride home after socialising but then the vodka content remains large.......

Eh? Where? Winter Street running into Barber Road? lined by trees? And that park - ooh wooh hooh - what a dump! Weston park, OK fair enough, but this hardly screams greenest city in England at me!

robbie
22-06-2005, 13:34
so the fact is that as you turn onto winter street there are trees and garss to the right of you. to the left 8after the tennis courts with the trees around them) there is a park with loads of trees. You may have missed Ponderosa park on your right due to the TREES blocking it out.

so where are the trees ?

and which city are you from with more trees ? :loopy:

Sheffield has more trees than any other major city. If you're just looking at the city centre than no, there probably won't be many trees. But the south and west areas of the city are full of parks, woods, tree lined roads, etc. Then of course there's the Peak District in the same direction. Take a tour.

Ah the famous Sheffield civic pride in the number of trees. All unfairly distributed to rich folk, and not a single leaf in the Don Valley.

Obviously there's not going to be as much greenery in the old industrial parts of town. I don't see what you're trying to get at in this thread, other than trying to wind people up? If you think the greenery is all a myth, take a drive around most of the south and west of the city and see for yourself. Or pick up a map and look at all of the parks and woods, and proximity to the moors/ Peak District.

Certainly Sheffield is in my view a relatively green city with plenty of parks etc.; it's hard to see how theflyingfish can dispute that even if those green bits don't happen to be anywhere near where he goes.

But saying that Sheffield is near to the Peak District isn't really pointing out a feature of Sheffield, it's pointing out the attractiveness of somewhere that's near to Sheffield. It's a bit like saying that a feature of Leeds is that it's close to the Yorkshire Dales, or a feature of Manchester is that it's close to the Lake District.

Yes but parts of the city boundaries to the south west actually INCLUDE the Peak District, making Sheffield the only city which includes part of a National Park. :)

It is - being close to the Peak District is a feature, the same as a feature of Whitby is that it's by the sea.

Oh come on! Sheffield is a really green city, ok the very core of the city centre isn't as green as it could be - but you've got Devonshire Green for a start. I think living in the suburbs of Sheffield is fantastic. Only the other day when I was walking my dog with a fellow forummer, we walked through open fields and looked out at the vast amount of greenery around us and said - in what other city would you find this fantastic view?!

Sheffield is more like a very large village, there is plenty of greenery and plenty of nightlife and shops and things to do. It really is the most amazing and wonderful city - despite the council's attempts to ruin it all.

What people also seem to forget is that other cities also border on to the Park - such as Derby and Manchester, so it's hardly unique.

Go east from Manchester you have the Peak District, go the other way you have Salford, go the other way in Sheffield you have Rotherham. Whats the difference lol.
