I have got to have one on Monday. They were testing my blood glucose, thyroid function and kidneys. The letter I got said that random tests can be high so they have to do another one to determine whether or not I have diabetes. I find this unlikely but has anyone else been tested for something else, original thing was thyroid because I have anxiety and doctor wanted to know if there was anything else underlying. Im not worried or nothing but just wondered.

There are a lot of blood tests which need to be done after fasting.
Do you know which one it is?

The test normally done to diagnose either diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance (a common precursor to diabetes) is a glucose tolerance test.

This involves initially fasting, followed by taking a base-line blood sample, followed by drinking a dose of glucose, followed by other blood samples over the next 2 hours.

I have had one of these after the GP was not happy about the blood sugar levels on a routine blood test.

Have you been very fat for a long time?
Are you thirsty at night?
Do you wee a lot?
Do you get blured vision?

I know the last three can be associated with enjoying beer, but do these happen without the beer?

Since becoming ill in April 2002 I've had numerous blood tests at the GP's and and the hospital. The tests have covered just about everything possible - thyroid function, glucose, liver function, iron, droplet testing (something to do with thickness of blood) etc etc. But i've only ever had to 'fast' prior to one test which was a repeat test for blood sugar levels.

I am diabetic myself and have been for 2 yrs.I had a fasting blood test when i was pregnant with son now aged 12.Well it was the afore mentioned'glucose tolerence test'which i think is much the same.
Dont enjoy the experience of giving blood samples much but didnt find the fasting test much different to a normal blood test only that i was starving!!!
Can i just say that not all diabetics are fat or have been fat.Yes type 2 diabetes can be associated with being overweight, but not in all cases.Type one diabetes is usually insolin controlled i think(im no expert ) and i know 2 friends who have young children who are diabetic.
Hope this helps

They should have told you whether you're going for a fasting blood sugar or a GTT - Glucose Tolerance Test (one needle vs two!)

If you're going for a fasting blood sugar, then you'll be allowed out as soon as it's done.

If it's a GTT, then take a book and be prepared to wait two hours after the first needle and the glucose drink. They'll then take another blood sample, and the labs will compare the two results to see how you've dealt with a measured amount of glucose.

Some GP's will do a fasting glucose and see the results of that test before deciding on whether to do a GTT, others will do GTT as standard, and some won't do GTT's at all, so if you aren't sure which it is, then I'd ring them and make sure.

My blood sugar was a bit high but insignificant, my thyroid was fine as was my liver and kidneys so they gave me more medication for anxiety & panic attacks. The only thing working for me at the moment is diazepam but I try to take it as infrequently as possible and carry on avoiding things that I want to do because of those damn panic attacks!

It's not much different from the glucose issue but I've got insulin resistance as a precursor to type II diabetes, however, it is another thing to look out for via the test.
I've got my pregnancy GTT coming up soon but everything is looking for for not having gestational diabetes.
