View Full Version : City or out of town living?
grub_lover 08-02-2009, 11:59 I live on the outskirts of Sheffield but i work in the City Centre. I am sick of the 40 min drive everyday, this seems to get worse every year mainly because of the increase in popularity (traffic) of sheffield. Should i move to the city, stick where i am or get a new job :hihi:?
just wondered what everyones opinions are on city centre living?
City living; too manic, too noisy, too dirty, too many cars, too many people and too damned fast.

I'm the same, I wouldn't like to live in s1 but wouldn't mind living half way there. Where there's actually life.
grub_lover 08-02-2009, 12:43 i dont fancy moving house for the sake of 10 minutes off my journey. Its like all or nothing but i think broom hill is close and has a few nice houses. Thats if you dont mind student :-) where else it there?
Ms Macbeth 08-02-2009, 13:00 I got tired of driving/relying on public transport from Bramley/Rotherham to Sheffield centre every day to work. Either the motorway or Parkway/Bawtry Road were at a standstill, or there were no parking spaces at MH park & ride, or the direct bus services (X9/X7) down Parkway were reduced yet again.
Moved to Hillsborough, got rid of our second car and started using the tram. The journey to work became so much easier - catch tram, read Metro, and I'm at work. Aaaah, much less stressful.
grub_lover 08-02-2009, 13:05 I dont actually think traffic is that bad compared with other cities but it is getting worse as more people live in the city centre.
Should i join them? No one has said what i would lose if i lived in town?

Sanity is normally the first thing to go followed by a gradual loss of manners and courtesy but if it cuts journey time down go right ahead.

I presume you're in your 80s?!?

Ooh goodie a guessing game.
lettolive 10-02-2009, 15:57 There are that many apartments in the city centre now the rents have all gone down because there's too much competition. I would suggest you move there for cheaper accomodation and easier access to work.
=)
I loved living in town, yeah its a little noisier but with the standard of double glazing on the new flats you don't really hear anything unless is very loud!
sheffield is pretty small so you can be anywhere in town reasonably quickly and there are enough food shops to do your shopping.
No need to worry about taxis getting home and its SO nice to be able to WALK to work.
Why don't you rent for 6 months to see if you like it first?
Personally I think the outskirts of Sheffield are the best of both worlds. There is access to lovely countryside and good shopping facilities without travelling far as well as the convenience of city life also not far away. I think if you're very young, don't have dogs and want to go out clubbing every night then city centre life is fine. I've grown out of that sort of thing now and want a quieter life but still want to be able to get to town when I feel like it.
As far as a 40 minute commute to work goes, I lived in London for years so think nothing of travelling a long way to get to work. 40 minutes in London would be a blessing, people there are lucky if their work is an hour from home.

agreed- thats why places like crookes, broomhill, and further up eccie road are highly sought after by young professionals.
