View Full Version : Coronation Street - ridiculous or great?
Personally I don't watch it (too busy running this), but I'm sure a lot of you reading this do. What are you thoughts on the current story line? Have they pushed it too far? Or is it still gripping stuff? Let me (and everyone else) know your thoughts.
I watch it occasionally, mainly to laugh at it.
recently its been good, with all the killer corrie lark, its a serious drama and not a comedy  Pff!!
Michael_W 12-03-2003, 23:20 Nearly wet myself tonight (no pun intended !), when Richard Hillman took the family for a dip in the canal. I hope the bosses don't kill him off, if he hangs around long enough he could do away with whole street ! LOL !!
I don't have a problem with the street and have been known to view the odd episode although I don't go out of my way to watch it. I think the level of competition with Eastenders makes the script writer constantly on their toes and there is one big storyline after another.
*Twinkle* 17-04-2003, 21:04 It's okay I suppose, but there's been a lot of violence lately, what will the Richard saga and the shooting of Tommy. I suppose it's just reflective of today's society, but still - I don't agree with them putting it on corrie! It's shown at 7.30, therefore its suitable for children. My little sister (she's eight) was scared that they used "real" guns and whatnot, after seeing the shooting etc. It's a shame they can't make a good storyline without violence these days!
get rid of these old threads
Tara,
You seem to have brought this topic back to the forefront of discussion, but apparently you wanted it got rid of?

Um, cos this thread had probably dwindled way back on to at least the second page of threads until you topped it by hypocritically whinging about people recycling old threads... :loopy:
Yes, The last post was back in April until you decided to reinvigorate it by moaning about that very same thing. :shakes: :?
I wouldn't say Corrie was great but I wouldn't say it was ridiculous either, too many people watch it for it to be classed as that.
I only watch it if Im feeling too happy.
Soon gets me down again. :loopy:
Isn't it about time that TV stations put a stop to all soap operas? they really are all sh**e. Bad acting, s**t repetative storylines. They are always on when theres something good on the other channel like football.
These so-called muppet actors have award ceremonies every year with meaningful categories like best looking actor etc.
I wish Coronation Street, Emmerdale & Eastenders could be completely removed from our screens forever.
Coronation St is absolute rubbish. A typical grim northern street populated by typically common residents, with storylines so far fetched that they're laughable.
Got to agree, It's so so soooooooooooo bad I really dont know how it's managed to stay on air for so many years.
Why do people watch such unrealistic trash?
I don't watch any soaps.
watching real-life people arguing is more enjoyable!
besides, the paper always tells you what's going to happen and who's going to do what in all the soaps, 2 minutes reading saves an hour's watching.
Why is that? If a paper said "<film> is on today and how it ends is............" there's be an outcry! Yet people love to rad about some soap opera, then watch it even though they know what will happen :loopy:

Isn't it better to search and dig up old threads than waste bandwith etc - or whatever the mods were "moaning" about wasting?
However, i was responsible for starting a second "lunch/dinner" thread! Which got merged:P

I feel you're missing the point somewhat. Corrie is not "absolute rubbish" at all. It may not appeal to someone of your age, is what you really mean. But the fact is, it's brilliant.
The residents are also not "typically common." Far from it. I suspect they'd be a lot more "common" than that in a real Salford street
The storylines are far-fetched, it's true (especially now it's shown 4 times a week), but it's one of the few soaps that can successfully switch from farce to pathos and back again with ease. It's beautifully written and (for the most part) well-acted, given the huge turn-over of episodes.
Famous fans of Corrie ranged from Lord Olivier to Sir John Betjeman, the Poet Laureate, who likened the series to Dickens's Pickwick Papers and declared "At 7.30 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays, I am in heaven".
And Russell Harty wrote "There was life before Coronation Street - but it didn't add up to much". Betjeman, Harty, Michael Parkinson and playwright Willis Hall also formed the British League of Hilda Ogden.
