I will ask my GP, but it will probably take ages for the referral to go through. Thinking of maybe going private but where do I start?

Ask your GP to recommend one. They should be able to give you a list of ones that take private patients, as they do this for physios, etc.

This might be useful...

My dad slipped a disc about 15 years ago. Around the same time, my uncle had a bad fall at work and hurt his back. My dad went to a chiropractor (in Preston), my uncle to an osteopath (in Manchester).

It took years for my dad's back to get back to normal. He was in discomfort for a fair few years and couldn't get around very much but now he's pretty much completely recovered. Well, as much as you *can* recover from a slipped disc.

My uncle's osteopath did some pretty major 'manipulation' stuff and, as uncle John said, "clicked every one of those slipped discs back into place". Uncle John felt great after six months or so of treatment. A few years later his back had got bad again. Now, he's unable to walk without a stick and is in constant and frequently severe pain.

Everyone's different, and there are good and back practitioners of all kinds of therapy, but my advice would be to avoid osteopaths. IMO, their approach carries with it more risk. A chiropractor might not give quick results, but I think you need to be patient and careful with backs

I went to an osteopath somewhere in Killamarsh, its called Killamarsh Osteopathy Practice. His name is William Eakin, he is very good and cured my neck and shoulder problem in one session. Look under Osteopaths on Yell.com and it will bring the number up and directions.

Susan Pawsey at Fulwood (She's in the Yellow Pages) is really good. She will tell you straight and doesn't keep you going if she thinks you don't need (unlike another person I went to see who kept me going and it didn't do me any good).

Cranial Osteopathy. Is that where they stick their finger in your mouth, waggle it about, and charge you £60?

That's not osteopathy. There are ladies in Westminster who provide similar services to the more dissipated MPs, but for a bit more than 60 quid and with a 'happy finish'.

But as to Cranial thingy, try the Stillpoint Practice:

The Stillpoint Practice 25 Montgomery Road Nether Edge Sheffield S7 1LN Tel: 01142584 558

At least one of the practitioners there specialises in infant cranial osteopathy. Mrs Joyphil took little Olivia there to iron out any problems after a three-day labour (for both of them) and had nothing but praise for the place. She's a nurse too, so knows good therapeutic practice when she sees it. Cost was wholly reasonable, if I recall.

Aye, some heavily rational science minded friends of mine took their endlessly crying babe to a cranial osteopath.

He stuck his finger in her mouth, waggled it around in a special way, and presto, crying baby cured.

Couple went off £60 lighter (bargain) scratching their heads, and mostly happy if somewhat confused.

Lisa Halse is a Cranial Osteopath specialising in babies and children, she works at the Stillpoint practice in Nether Edge, and Greenways in Totley. Greenways telephone number is 0114 2360890. She is fantastic!

I would also highly recommend Lisa Halse, she has been treating my son samuel (who has cerebal palsy) and he has improved greatly under her treatment.

Second (or is that third) the Lisa Halse recommendation. Although I'm not a child and don't have cranial osteopathy I went to her originally because she specialises in doing things the gentle way, and she's been one of the major reasons that my back still functions, albeit in an impaired way (nobody can repair all the abnormalities in my spine, just keep it ticking over). I've been a client of Lisa's for 12 years now, and know that she's passionate about helping children and babies. She also does a clinic at the Children's Hospital, I think.
