View Full Version : Are the flash floods in North Yorks being ignored?
Have the flash floods that have swept North Yorkshire been ignored by the media? I ask because there has been very little on either television or in the newspapers, where as the one that swept through Boscastle last year filled our papers and screens for days on end.
Southern bias anyone? surely not :shakes:
cgksheff 21-06-2005, 07:12 You know that in order to see things on the box, you have to turn your telly on!
It's full of it this morning.:D

If the Bilsdale transmitter hadn't gone down up here, I'm sure more people who actually live in North Yorkshire would know about it. I got my news from fivelive (but thank the lord for Sky! :heyhey: :heyhey: :heyhey: )
I suppose if it's a slow news day, or the middle of summer, the media will usually manage to pad out the most boring topic to fill a 30 minute news slot.
But what with more 'interesting' things going on at the moment, a bunch of farmers who've had their fields washed away won't get that much coverage.
Especially as these floods always happen in the inferior North and West Yorkshires ;)
alchresearch 21-06-2005, 12:11 There has been coverage, but certainly not to the usual extent.
melthebell 21-06-2005, 17:49 i live on the north yorkshire / cleveland border and its full of it :P

Off-topic the Whitby Gazette has to be the most repetitive paper in the world, it prints the same stories every week, just changes a few names and streets!
It was all over the tabloids today (we only get tabloids in the bar now we have a new guy doing mornings, he likes the Sun, mirror and mail >_<) complete with photos and sensationlisation :p
candystick 21-06-2005, 18:12 As usual it will be on the news for 2 or 3 days then we will here nowt else about it. Why because it happened in England and not abroad.

I noticed the very same. The national media have proven their Southern bias well and truly with both the (lack of) coverage of these floods and all of the prejudiced "jokes" surrounding York hosting Ascot.
And CGKSheff - when Boscastle had similar floods there were extended news programmes, news specials, front page national newspaper splashes for several days, etc etc. Of course you can dig some hyperlinks out to news stories because the media are covering it, but to nowhere NEAR the same extent as the Boscastle floods.

Owdlad asked if the events were being ignored by the media.
They certainly were not being ignored and, in fact, it was being covered every 30 minutes or more on both BBC & ITV this morning.
The links have not been "dug out" but were recalled to illustrate that which I had read whilst keeping abreast of current affairs.
Bias? Probably. But not a part of the post that I was addressing.
Greybeard 21-06-2005, 20:39 BBC Breakfast News were straight on to the story yesterday morning and Look North have had extensive coverage two days running. With Boscastle there was a fair bit of spectacular amateur video of the event the TV news services could use which wasn't availbe for the N Yorks floods.
I saw quite enough of it,...really hate the way theses TV reporters wallow in other people's misery :(

If it was abroad we wouldn't have heard about it.
As it is, it's been all over the media (at least from what I've seen.)

Im not surprised. If I was from another country like Spain for example. I doubt I would want to hear about some flood in England, especially in Yorkshire. It isnt exactly worthy of world news imo.
In all fairness guys, the 'Flash Floods' weren't all that big, and all that dangerous. The amount of damage compared to Boscastle was incredibly minimal, and the risk of loss at life was very little.
Also remember at Boscastle there was a risk of people being washed out to sea, no such risk at Sutton Bank!
candystick 21-06-2005, 21:10 So if you were on holiday in Spain or lived there and had family in Yorkshire you wouldn't want to know and check if they were ok?

Sorry? Excuse Me?
When did I say that? Have I missed a paragraph I wrote while I was asleep?
candystick 21-06-2005, 21:17 Sorry Hook must have been posting while you were. That was directed to spyro.

Oh for sure, thats different, Im talking in general, and as Hook said, they werent exactly major. If they were major then yes I would expect them to be world news, but for something of minimal impact I dont see why it should.
Cheers

Yes i get your point.
So in conclusion (just to get the debate going again):
· People in North Yorkshire are paranoid about being maligned, even if they don't know the extent of the damage.
· Even in the face of being shown that perhaps the events weren't all that serious, we're still maligned.
· And when confronted with evidence to prove that it was covered fairly in the press, they haven't seen it?
:hihi:

I wasn't trying to "pick fights". Maybe you should've made it clearer which aspect of his post you were addressing? As it turns out, we seem to be in agreement that a bias probably exists.

I agree with all that except for the "especially in Yorkshire" comment. What exactly do you mean by that?

Im not saying its right, but if someone from another country heard there were some floods in Yorkshire, the first thing they would say is "where???". But if it was London, they may sit up and take notice.
Like ive said, im not sayimg its right, and its a generalisation, but I think thats just the way it is.

I don't see such a bias. And I'm not quite sure how you can declare a bias exists without actually being aware what when on.
For the record, on the very front page of the BBC News website's 'England' section there is currently an article regarding the floods. Which in my opinion, knowing what happened there, from living in the area, and from having friends who live in the affect areas, is due prominence link (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/default.stm)

Not compared to the front page splashes for days after the Boscastle floods, as well as special news programmes. There's no doubt in my mind that a Southern bias exists in the national media, mainly because it's nearly all based in the South. The "jokes" about flat caps and whippets around the Ascot being held in York also confirm this.

Because there was a huge difference in the damage and devestation caused. I've already gone through this :gag:

Not really, although until the repair bill comes in we can't say for sure.

I live near there, I have friends who live in Helmsley. It's nowhere near as bad as it has been portrayed in some media outlets, and especially in the tabloid papers.

I'm sure Boscastle wasn't either. We'll just have to wait until the repair bill comes in and then we can make a half-worthwhile comparison.
