View Full Version : Do you bite your nails?
Don_Kiddick 21-06-2005, 02:12 I do.
Have done since I've had teeth.
Don't know why - I enjoy it.
Sometimes I make them bleed.
I'm not a nervous sort (I don't think:suspect: )
And I don't believe Freud's theory who said it was a substitute for masturbation :o either.
He should have stuck to advertising Minced Morcells.
GimmeSomePK 21-06-2005, 02:39 None of the above.
I bite my nails every few days to keep them trim instead of cutting them. No nervous or habbit reasons, just find it easier to bite than clip, usually in the shower.

Yup, bite my nails to excess.
Started when I was 5 or 6 after some thoughtful teachers decided that I shouldn't be left handed in the classroom and made me do everything right handed.
Never mind, I'm sure that stammering for 5 or 6 years, being lumbered with dreadful handwriting and biting my nails have all been worth it so I can enter society as a right handed man!
I've stoppe din the past but if I went through a stressful period soon after stopping I was back on them again.
I guess that the reason why I've never used any of the cures available of hypnosis is that I view it as a 'lesser evil' than, say, smoking! And I sort of like doing it!

JonJParr 21-06-2005, 06:57 I bite mine too - but not excessively (ie. I've never made them bleed). I wish I didn't - but it's not something I can control. I tend to bite them the most whilst watching a film at the cinema.
I stopped biting my nails completely back in the new year, then recently I went through a bit of a stressful period and now my lovely long nails are little stumpy things again :(
I used to be a nightmare for biting my nails... I'd bite each nail right as far back as i could... if i couldnt get any further on one nail i'd then move onto the next...
Also chew all the skin around them too... often making them bleed... It was a really bad habbit...
I stopped biting my nails at the age of 17... I glued false nails on with UHU glue hoping they'd stay on... :( wrong!
So i sat myself down and told myself that i had to stop and from that day 17 years ago i have never looked back...
I am really pleased with myself and very proud of my nails when tarted up :)
But... should i have a nibble i dont think i'd ever stop again... so my answer is to keep my nails away from the nasty knashers :hihi:
I believe that should i be able to give up biting my nails anyone can... :)
I used to bite them all the time until I was about 13/14.
I was that age when I got my brace and I wasn't able to bite them anymore!!!! :hihi:
It was terrible! I had withdrawl symptons and everything... ;)
i bite mine only when im anxious and nervous, disgusting habbit i know but i cant stop want to tho.
I bite my nails when I'm watching TV, or when I'm thinking at work. I keep going until I hit finger and it starts bleeding, then I go for the bits of skin round the edge. My fingers look terrible but my nails grow realy quickly and I can get them back into shape in a month, if i try realy hard.
I bit my nails for years and years, infact one of my index fingers practically had no nail at all. But last year I decided to stop, I just wanted to have pretty nails.
I still cant stop chewing the skin round them though or picking at it . and I find that the feel of the nail on my finger is really irritating at times, but I managed so far to resist having a good yank with my teeth :D and plus there soo good for scratching
What has THIS (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v689/viking99/forums/dogknows.bmp) Little lad got to lose if he bites his nails?
valentine 21-06-2005, 09:58 I bit my nails from a toddler up until I was 33, then I broke my arm and had a full length cast on my arm so I couldn't get my hand in my mouth for 5 weeks,
I have managed to keep my nails fairly OK but I do nibble the skin sometimes, I don't realise I do it.
Swan_Vesta 21-06-2005, 10:06 No, I clip them and then file any wayward bits. I don't like having them too long to become and irritation but long enough to be able to free a stubborn ring pull.

Thats soo funny .... :gag: Having a toddler I see the humour and horror in that picture.
Yeah - I bite my finger nails.
But I have a very good reason - it's so I can pick my nose in safety!
You may laugh but look at this poor fella :

BoroughGal 21-06-2005, 10:58 I don't bite my fingernails, I hate it when they're all jagged and pull on your clothes. However, they then grow too long and break half way down the nail bed. All the time.
I draw the line at biting toe nails but I see no problem with fingers. Gotta keep the immune system strong.
chickmonk 21-06-2005, 11:58 I stopped biting my nails for the first time in my life about 1 month ago. And guess what? They've grown! (Gosh, I'm a genius!).
Plus side - they are long and I can pretend to be a tiger
Down side - they get full of grubs and dirt (mmm, tasty)
I stopped when I was about 13 cos I wanted attractive nails rather than the raggedy things I had. I only ever nibble when I've done some damage and need to sort it out to prevent it getting worse, otherwise I wait until i have access to a nail file.
Occasionally the inner beast leaps out and I find I've bitten more good nail than damaged.
natalie3011 21-06-2005, 14:20 isnt biting your nails meant to be as bad as licking a toilet seat???
StarSparkle 21-06-2005, 14:34 I've always bitten my nails. Most of the time I'm not even aware I'm doing it!
I've managed to stop quite a number of times though, and my nails have grown quite long, quite quickly - but then they always break - usually tearing about half way down - and that really hurts!
However, I've now decided that as far as bad habits go, it's not too bad, and I'll probably just carry on doing it. It's either that or smoking, so I think I'll stick with the nail-biting!
