I wouldn't take my bike to anywhere other than CCC's or the sports performance centre at J.E James.

And get treat like some sort of sub-species unless you have a £2000 bike :loopy:
I worked with one of the head chaps for 3 years. He went to work for James's and now he wont even acknowledge me.
Obviously thinks he's better than me and his other ex friends

I'd stick with one of the older/smaller shops. Much better service

I can definitley recommend Butterworth's on Abbeydale road. Very reasonably priced, good service and friendly too.

He services both my bikes and recently built me a new set of wheels for my mountain bike. Brlliant!

JE James are great, I bought a new bike yesterday, they were friendly, dident push me, offered sound advice. I used to take my old bake to the JE James in rotherham, and they always did a good job, and were very reasonably priced.

I can't recommend somewhere to go, as I've taken to doing the work myself on my own bike, but I'd agree with the caution being voiced about JE James (certainly at Rotherham anyway).

I got a new bike from them last year and they hadn't set it up properly at all, even basic things like the brakes not being set up correctly hadn't been spotted.

It might have just been bad luck, and they might normally be better, but considering what these things cost, I wouldn't go back again.

Id agree J E James can be a bit hit or miss at times with the service you get. I really have no complaints about the staff in the Alderson Road branch in Sheffield. Id have to say Andy & Craig in the road bike department are very good. The more older branch on the opposite side of the road can be very bad for customer service at times.

On the whole dispite iffy service at times i will always go back to J E James as its an overall excellent shop.

As we speak they are building up my brand new shiny Trek Madone right now, as i have a good basic knowledge of bike set up, all learned from my good friend Kevin who use to own the BikeShop on Woodsetas Rd, i will be giving the bike a once over myself before i leave the shop. When spending over £2000 on a bike you want nothing short of a perfect set up, brakes, gears ect ect. Should i not be 100% happy i will not be paying for it.

Langsett cycles are the nearest to me and service bikes, are they any good? anybody used them?

Butterworth's have been going for ages simply because they are the best at what they do.

Langsett and J.E.James are not bad. The only bit I dont like in bike maintenance is wheel truing. Everything else is easy, just build up your tools as you need them.

I've used Langsett a bit - I do my own bike servicing, but leave the wheels to Langsett and they've always been good

Anyone else remember James cycles from the mid 60's when he started with a little shop between the off licence and the hairdressers on Bramall lane.?
Used to sell secondhand bike bits ( brakes, cowhorn handlebars etc) and the odd Gat pistol. Not done too badly for himself !!
regards Mick

ReCycle Bikes are worth checking out, www.recyclebikes.co.uk

They also do cycle maintenance training courses. If your interested have a look at the 'Workshop' page on their website.

Butterworths on Catchbar Lane (corner of leppings lane) is very good, used them a few times, good knowledge, good prices and no snobbery, only took my kids bikes in :)

The more older branch on the opposite side of the road can be very bad for customer service at times...A masterly understatement! The staff of the latter impressed me as a bunch of supercilious self-manipulators on the one and only occasion that I spent money with them, were it not for the fact that the item was unavailable elsewhere at short notice and that I was buying it on someone else's behalf, I wouldn't have entertained giving them any business... I might add that I don't ride a 2K bike... Just as MOST cyclists don't!!

Depends where you are.

On Abbeydale Road there is Butterworths Cycles.

In Hope there is Eighteen Bikes.

I have found CCC can always fit you in within a reasonable timeframe, when I have booked bikes into JE James, they always seem to quote over a week, which is inconvenient if your mode of transport is out of action for this long. Also JE James seem to miss off bits of the job as booked in, or not have it ready when they say they will and when you go in they seem to be letting their mates performance bikes jump the queue. We have had all sorts of bikes over the years and have and would buy from JE James but they could do with having a bit more empathy with those that cycle bikes that you don't have to dress up in head to toe lycra to ride.

Admittedly I've not tried the workshop in Decathlon. I've never bought a bike from there but since they operate in full view of the public I would imagine they are probably quite good.

A.E Butterworth's across from the Broadfield, rapid and reasonably priced servicing. Used to do my old Santa Cruz for me before it was nicked... :(

I use Butterworths at Hillsborough. They seem able to turn a bike repair around in a matter of days, unlike JE James who want 2 weeks. After many a bad experience there - on repairs and spares availability I won't touch 'em with a barge pole.

Butterworths are fine. I don't like going into J.E. James I have to say, and it appears I'm not alone in that. I just don't get a good vibe in there at all, so I've given up. There's an "atmosphere", and I can't put my finger on what it is exactly.

I find the staff in JE James to be a friendly bunch of people. Typical bikers, to be honest. The service centre at Decathlon is quite good however, and cheap too. Think it's only around £50 or so for a service.

RECYCLE at Thurlow (or is it Thurleigh?) Street, Heeley, are very good, both on price and service; they are generally open Monday to Saturday, and there is info about them on some other threads.
They also sell quality secondhand reconditioned bikes and accept donations of old bikes and parts.

I agree. Went in at the weekend for a new seat stem. I wasnt sure of the bore so he gave me one size and told me to try it(without scratching it of course) and to bring it back if its not the one. A very friendly service from the staff.

We went into James just the once for a bike for my daughter. It took us 20 minutes to find a member of staff and in the meantime , i.d already sized up a frame for my little girl only to be told by the saturday helping hand that it wasnt the correct size and pointed me towards a more expensive one.
Well, Being a pink girly frame that we'd picked as the cheaper and more suitable option for my daughter. The Saturday helping hand didnt wanna know all of a sudden so we left........and bought a bike from Decathlon :hihi:

It's a real PITA that in S Yorks there really is a monopoly if you want to buy a good, branded MTB, ie JE James. After numerous negative experiences in there - for spares, clothes and my last MTB purchase (eventually made in W Yorks) I hate them with a passion.

Langsett are always helpful.
JE. James always seem to have a backlog, so can't get the job done quickly...
