I didn't live in Darnall but my grandma and grandad lived on Fisher lane, just up from the medical aid. My brother and I used to think that Batman and Robin lived in that detached house just down from the M A :)

I used to love going to play bingo with Grandad at Darnall libs, and we had some great trips out with the club.

We used to go to Lomas' chippy.

We had some really happy times in Darnall in the early to late 70's.

I lived in Darnall untl we were moved for redevelopment.
I loved it it brings back memeories , piggy lane allotments, long summers in High Hazels Park, and the club trips to Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe. Do you remember Whitby Road School, getting evacuated and every one having to be bused to Achreshill school? Whitby Road stared to fall down a disussed mine shaft. Must be getting old!!

Hi...my husband used to live in darnall too until they were moved cos the houses were being demolished....they lived on Cattall Street..think his parents had been there years...his grandparents lived on the street with the post office at the top..forgotten the name now...would it be Farenden or something like that?? I can remember we hadnt been courting very long and he took me home for tea..as you used to do in those days....and i started to wash the pots after tea and found no hot water coming from the hot water tap..there was cold running water but no hot..so i started to bang the tap..they all stood and laughed at me..i had no idea houses didnt have hot water...felt a right pillock!!! Theyre house didnt have a bathroom either...it was the tin bath or the shower in the corner of the bedroom...it was only a 2bed house so my husband used to have the landing as his bedrooom...a dividing wall was put up and a small bed was put in for him.....god kids today would think you had gone crazy if they saw that wouldnt they??

Me and my husband bought a house on Uttley St when we were first married in the early 70s. Cost us £400 Two years later we moved to Wixley Rd due to slum clearance. Not long after that we moved to Phillimore Rd school and became caretakers.Happy times and such friendly people.

My mum grew up in Darnall - she lived on Bridport Road and went to Whitby Road School. She was a MayQueen one year (but I don't know which). She's just turned 70 - my nan and grandad lived in the same house until it was demolished and they moved to a flat on the Greenland estate. I remember they had a big shared yard and the old air raid shelter was still there even when I was little (at least that's what my Grandad used to tell us it was!)

I lived at 88 Coleford Road in the early sixties in my nans house before my mum and dad got their own place on the Manor. There was Devoties ice cream yard at the bottom of our road opposite the corner shop. At the top were some private garages just before the old rectory house..My aunty Ethel Holmes had the sweets shop just below the fire station on Darnall main Road..
Heres a wierd thing..After I first met my wife I went with her to meet her mum one day and she asked my where I lived when I was young as she knew the Fletcher name..It turns out they lived in the house right next door to us at no 90 although I had moved by then but she used to see me when I'd come and visit my nan..

I had an Aunty and Uncle that lived in Darnall, Frank and Elsie Turner,I believe that Frank died in the early 60's,and I doubt that Elsie would still be alive either.I would love to be able to get in touch with my two cousins. I'm pretty sure that the eldest was named Robert, not sure about the other one. I think that they used to call her Patsy which might mean that her name was Patricia? Robert would have to be about 70 or close to and Patsy?coming up to 60. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Darnall Carnival, which replaced the Easter parade some years ago,is on Saturday June 13th from 12 noon, with a Mela the following day.
The carnival will unfortunately be smaller than recent years, due to Sheffield City Council's disgraceful decision not to fund Darnall Forum.

Does anyone remember the Bradleys from the fireplace business or Ernie Sissons from the butcher's ?
I spent a lot of time in Darnall in the late 40's early 50's - most of my mates lived there. High Hazel's Park and the drinks shop on a Sunday when everything else was closed and of course the Medical Aid Society Parade with Ernest Morley. I have told this story on another thread but here goes :
I was on the Handsworth tram as it left Darnall, when Ernie jumped on banging his head on the pole on the platform. " You'd better put some butter on that " said the conductor. "What do you think I am - a bleeding tea cake " sez Ernie. There was never a dull moment when he was around but then as I remember that was true of a lot of the Darnall people I knew.

I worked at Walt Bradley's Fireplace shop in 1959 I worked with his son Gordon fitting fireplaces etc. I was born in Helen Road Darnall and lived there for 20 years, went to Darnall Board Junior school and on to Whitby Rd school when Mr Saxon was headteacher. I remember one dinnertime some kids sneaked back into the science classroom and one of the boys was messing around with some chemicals and the explosion nearly blew the bottom wing off the school, the lads came staggering out of the classroom covered in purple and yellow blotches.
Some dinnertimes we used to go to one of the mates house to smoke a tuppenny fag from Cyrils and listen to the latest R&R records and this guy who was related to my mate would do the weekly wash for the family used to tell us we were a decadent lot, his name was Ernest Morley.
My brothers and I were all in the Coleford Rd Scout troop great times "indeed"

Possibly a good idea to leave it where it is, you get a higher class of vandal in the botanical gardens.

We lived on Cravens Rd 1953 to 70 spending my childhood and youth there. Wouldn't change any of it, Whitby Rd infants and junior school and then Waltheof. Those summer days in High hazels park and the woods around the golf course, the funfairs on the dog track carpark and going down the "darkie" from opposite the Halfway house to come out near the railway bridge at the bottom on prince of Wales Rd. Dad worked at Davey United so I remember the sports days well.

I worked at GREENTHORPES in 1956/57 as a drivers mate to my uncle bob.We were on hire to the SHEFFIELD FURNISHING CO, at the junction of INFIRMARY RD and PENISTONE RD.Also there at that time was a man named BANNERS JACK,(guess who was hired out to)??,his mate was TERRY MURDOCH. ALBERT WARD,(GEORGES brother-in-law)was also there.in fact the house next door to THORPES on the upper side was bought by the THORPES for ALBERT, from a man named ARTHUR PHEATON.Years later i met ARTHURS son ELLIS,and we became best friends for life.Ufortunatley he has now passed away.eightlegger. P.S. ARTHUR PHEATON had a coal business in DARNALL, i think their yard was on INDUSTRY RD.

I Was born in Smith Street. if anyone remembers it.
it was only a small Street with about 8 terrace houses on it.
it was the one after Coleford road
going towards the bus depot,(now b&q)
My Dad lived in the house belonging to Coleford road club.
his name was Cyril Chaplin.
and had family on Fitzmurice rd.

My grandma used to be the projectionist at
the cinemas in Darnall.
One of the places is now the big lighting company on the corner.

I used to visit Pamela Russell, 267 Coleford Rd. She had three brothers, George, Keith, and David; and two sisters, Cindy and Marie. I use to catch the tram at Darnall. In 1960 I married Pamela, had 3 children. It's a small world.

Lived on Industry Road near the bottom end between the years of 1960 and 1970. Remember Roomes beer off shop which had a double entry and Roy the milkman with his horse and cart. Every Christmas Day the horse had to remember which houses Roy needed to deliver milk to as Roy was usually well oiled! Also Surrey Road playground with the high metal slide which we used to make more slippy by rubbing the wax paper from our daily loaf onto the bottom of. Caught many a child unawares. Also the flying plank which I think was made from a railway sleeper and was nearly the undoing of me when I once fell off and the beam narrowly missed my left temple!!Went to Whitby Road school betwenn 1965 and 1970....Mr Saxton was the head and Miss Musstell in charge of the little ones. I was in Ellison(red) house. The others being Cravens(blue), Hadfields(green) and..........Freddie and the Dreamers opened the new Tesco in Darnall now a WilKinsons. Piggy jack lane, Halfway House with a bag of crackers, pickled onion and triangle cheese, Lakins toyshop, army camp. Memories!!!!

Wow! memories or what? I lived near Saynors Chippie on Shirland Lane. Often climbed over the fence into the "Spirits" to get a ball back (Darnall Spiritualist Church). I remember going down the "darkie" and almost filling my pants with the stories of the rats there. Building a dam in the gully in front of the Halfway House - Walking up Piggie Lane to get to the park. The hours spent playing on the China Field behind the petrol station on Staniforth Road. How many went over Kettlebridge to creep into the train yard and the run like the wind cos the railwmen chased you! And in Darnall it seemed like Lakins owned every shop !

Wow, ive got a tear in my eye just reading all these posts!!
Best years of my life in Darnall and saddens me to see how downhill it's gone. Moved t Darnall from Pitsmoor in the mid 70's and thought how posh we must have been moving onto the newly built Greenlands estate!! Spent all summers in the park or frogging in the ponds on the golf course. Knocked about with Mossy, Putty, Barry and Gordon Fell. Whatever happened to him. Crazy kid!!
Moved away when I met my girlfriend of 20yrs. (Dont believe in marriage)
My Mum & Dad lived there until they pasted away in the late ninety's. Gladys & Tony Cupitt.. Great people and dearly missed.
Darnall.....Best place in the world....When i was a kid.....Get a tear in my eye when i drive through the Greenland estate....still.

I lived at darnall from 1980, wemoved onto fitzmaurice road from cottingham street, i know the afore mentioned mossy n putty, and it brings tears to my eyes too...........good old days x

My Grandadad was Walter Bradley who had the fireplace shop at 606 Staniforth Road. I live next door at 604 and my uncle Gordon Bradley lived at 602.
My grandma Madge used to run the shop. Gordon helped Walt in the building business and my mother June ran the grocers (front of 602) before it was sold.
we used to have a builders yard behind the station entrance at top of Station road. used to help build tiled fireplaces there in school holidays and have smashed up hundreds of Yorkshire ranges that came out to be replaced with a tiled fireplace. they must be worth hundreds of thousands now!
Gordon was secretary to the Horti Club (Darnall Horticultural and Floral Institute) for over 30 years. My mother June now lives up Acres Hill road.
i moved to Aston after getting married and still live there.

Ace of Clubs was Thursdays and Saturdays at Darnall Public Hall on Barnardistan Road (run between Staniforth Road and Darnall Main Road). I was always in there and saw an all black group called the Bedrocks who did a cover of Ob la di Ob la da. there was only about six of us in there that night. later the name of the club change to the Speakeasy.d

My brothers and I were all in the Coleford Rd Scout troop great times "indeed"

he had a display in the window of a tap hanging from cotton with water coming out of the spout but no supply pipe!
he kept about 10 greyhounds and some in kennels at Darnall Dog Track and some in our back yard.
a famous artist from Sheffield who still plays wrote a song called 'Darnall Dog Track' in the 60s. he lived in the yard off Swale road. his name is Frank White.

Hi all you Darnall people.

I was born 204 Coleford road October 1956, This was my Grandfarthers house Bob Clarke. We lived with them untill the 1960's when we moved to my Grandmothers house at 115 Industry Road (Briggs). Finailly we moved to 210 Coleford Road about 1965, this was a hpuse and shop on the corner or Coleford road / Coleford Place. We finally moved out of Darnall to Richmond, some would call woodthorpe in 1977 when the last of the old houses were cleared from the area.

We had loads of family that lived around Darnall all around the Coleford Rd / Industry Rd / Jubilie Rd area. Any one rember the Briggs / Clarkes / Booths.

I went to Phillimore Rd School and the Parkhouse.

Hi Bolsover

The Turners were all older than me but they lived at 208 Coleford road, my main memories of them are there seemed to be a lot of kids and a crazy dog that sang (wined) along when old man Turner played his armed forces band music, think he used to be in the guards.

I remember Rowena Roome , lovely girl with fabulous smile .
Roy Johnson - Milkman - He loved that horse and when the dairy got taken over and went to electric carts it just about did him in.The horse used to slip to its knees on the ice down basford st , roy picked it up !
The other house was hamptons (yellow)
Miss mustell was in infants ?
Surrey rd chippy - best ever .

Steve Staniforth , Richard Lean also lived on Indusrty rd.

Wow! memories or what?

Used to fly model aeroplanes ( control line ) on the china field with jimmy lawson , their were lots of lawson bros on darnall main rd. when the lines bust on the plane we " borrowed " some best knitting wool ..............

Hi 8legs
The Turners used to live a few doors up from me on Coleford, but if they was a Beril, I'm not sure, they were a large family.

I do remeber the Midltons around Phillimore school area, but again my memory is a bit shackey on details.

I tend to rember things and events more than names of people.

But they were good times.

This may not be relevant but if anyone out there knows if this is true. Apparently when King James was beheaded by axe, the execitioner came from Darnall.................Just wondered if this was true.

yes it is true , his surname was Walker and he lived in the big house just off Industry Road , but it was King Charles and not king James who was beheaded , where they have built some council houses now more or less opposite the Doctors on Main Road Darnall , i think that the road that the houses are on is called Malvin Road ?[ it is a cul-de-sac which runs to the the top of the Darnall cemetery ] but i am not sure about the name of this road. I read in a history book while at school that Walker was passing through Darnall on his way from London when he stayed in the house and decided to write a book about his memoirs . He remained there till he died i have forgotten which church yard he is buried in .

No mention of your Mr. Walker here:

"It is generally accepted that the identity of the executioners of Charles I will never be known. The story goes that the regular executioner, Richard Brandon, wanted nothing to do with the execution of a man who was king by divine right and that officials had to delay the execution while they roamed London for someone to do it.

Various theories have been put forward in terms of naming the man who executed Charles I. One is that the executioner was Richard Brandon. Instead of refusing to carry out the execution as history books would lead you to believe, it is thought that Brandon made it publicly known that he would refuse to behead Charles but, in fact, did so simply because it was his job.

In 1660, William Hulet was put on trial for carrying out the deed. One witness, Richard Gittens, claimed at the trial of Hulet that he was at the execution and recognised Hulet’s voice after Hulet had asked Charles to forgive him. However, for his defence a number of witnesses claimed that Richard Brandon had privately admitted on a number of occasions after January 1649 to beheading Charles. One of the defence witnesses, William Cox, claimed that he had heard Brandon at a later execution in the Palace Yard at Westminster, admit to one of those about to be executed, Lord Capel, that it was he who had beheaded Charles.

The executioner’s assistant is also unknown as, like the executioner, he wore a mask. However, there are some who believe that it was a Parliamentarian named George Joyce.

The principal evidence against Joyce came from an astrologer called William Lilly. Before a Parliamentary committee, Lilly described a dinner he attended. At the same dinner was Robert Spavin, Cromwell’s secretary. Lilly claimed that the sole discussion at the dinner was the execution of Charles – something that had occurred just over a week before this dinner. One of those at the dinner claimed that the executioner was “the Common Hangman” (a reference to Richard Brandon’s official title). However, Spavin made the claim that the executioner’s assistant was Lieutenant Colonel Joyce and that at the time no one knew his identity except Cromwell, Ireton and Spavin himself.

The register of St. Mary Matfellon, Whitechapel, records the burial of two remarkable persons—Brandon, the supposed executioner of Charles I., and Parker, the leader of the Mutiny at the Nore. Brandon was a ragman, in Rosemary Lane. The entry is—"1649. June 2. Richard Brandon, a man out of Rosemary Lane." And to this is added the following memorandum: "This R. Brandon is supposed to have cut off the head of Charles I." This man is said to have confessed that he had £30 for his work, and that it was paid him (why, we know not) in half-crowns, within an hour after the axe fell. He took an orange, stuck with cloves, and a handkerchief, out of the king's pocket, when the body was removed from the scaffold. For the orange he was offered twenty shillings by a gentleman in Whitehall, but he refused the sum, and afterwards sold the orange for ten shillings, in Rosemary Lane. This Brandon was the son of Gregory Brandon, and claimed the headman's axe by inheritance. The first person he had beheaded was the Earl of Strafford; but, after all, there is still doubts as to who struck the death-blow at King Charles, and some say it was that Cornet Joyce who once arrested the king. There is as much, perhaps, to be said for Brandon, of Rosemary Lane, as any one."

Hi All
I was born on Candow Street, off Shirland Lane and lived there till 1963 when we moved to Middlewood. Candow Street was demolished in about 1967.
I went to St Charles school on Hepponstall Lane.
Some one mentioned the Russell family, I was in the same class as David Russell.
We would walk to High Hazels park at the weekend, Saturday morning was spent at Attercliffe baths, afternoon at the roller skating rink.
School holidays we would catch the bus out to Longshaw or Fox House and play by the river all day. Millhouses park playing in the paddling pool. We would hang about in a large group of 12 or more, no being moved on or split up by the police!
A favourite play ground was the Briccie where BRS had there place, also the building site when they built the Staniforth Arms. Sledging on the 'tip' where the Chain Annealing Company was/is.
My brother managed to impail himself on railings at the St Andrews Mission Hall on Shirland Lane, luckily it left him non the worse.
I remember the Easter parade, it was one of the highlights of the holiday as we never got more than one Easter egg!
My maiden name was Meegan, brothers are Kelwin always known as 'Cab' and Michael.
Many happy memories of an idillyc childhood

Back in the mid 1970's, Darnall Medical Aid brought their "Jack and the Beanstalk" pantomime to Grenoside. I think a Grenoside lady called Margaret Twelves was their choreographer. The Grenoside Panto was born out of that simple beginning, started by Margaret, and is still going strong (with me in it) after 36 years. Some Darnall names I have from that time are Jack Douglas, Lol Fenton, Lynne Coyle, John Coyle, Christine Kenny. Anyone remember any of this? I'm doing a little history of the Grenoside group and it starts with the Medical Aid group, because it wouldn't have happened except for them

Nostalgia is a wonderful thing, you tend to look back at past experiences through rose tinted glasses. There seems to be a lot of negativity about the area in its current state. Some of the current housing stock must date back to the late 1800s, and still going.

Similar to a lot of major cities in the uk (east end of London) you get waves of migration, one group of people move on to better things and another lot aspiring for a better life move in, and the cycle goes on.

Hi All
I was born on Candow Street, off Shirland Lane and lived there till 1963 when we moved to Middlewood.

Hi I too was born on candow street, I lived at number ten and I think you lived lower down. I too did the same things you did on the brickie and the sledging etc. I new Kelwin (cab) very well infact I was there the the day he impailed himself on the railings. I think your house was the first in the street with a fridge, we would all pile into your house when your Mum and Dad was out and cab would share out the ice cubes. I think you had a dog called Lassie. Good times with out a care in the world.

I grew up in Swarcliffe Road - on the cusp 'twixt Darnall and Attercliffe. Google Streetview shows me that it is one of the few old streets remaining in that neck of the woods. I went to Whitby Road School with my twin sister from, oh, I guess it would be 1957, until we moved South in 1962. Mr Saxon was Headmaster then, I recall him well. It made me smile to see mention of Miss Mustell here - she was my favourite teacher EVER. I thought she was ancient - clearly she was around for some time after I knew her. Mrs Cook was another teacher that I liked very much. She left to move away to a strange land called County Durham...

I live in Orkney now and I know a lady here in her Seventies - she was taught by Miss Mustell too, and she also thought her ancient at the time. One of the last of the single female "vocational" teachers, I suspect. I am sure she formed many young minds.

My family name was Hill - Mum and Dad met when they both worked at Hadfields. Dad then went on the corporation buses, before going to work for Wall's at Bramall Lane, on the wholesale vans. Mum worked as secretary to a local builder. Nana (Holmes) and Grandad Vaughan lived a few streets away and my Auntie Dinah and cousins Lorraine, Pauline and John lived on the other side of Staniforth Road from us.

I was in the pantos, in the junior chorus, with my twin sister. I can remember being a little Dutch girl and a Hula girl... and being distraught at missing being in (I think it was) Cinderella, as I had 'flu. Our doctor was Johnny Cooper - he told me I was suffering from TV-itis, and I believed that for YEARS afterwards!

Speaking of Cinderella, if there is anybody around who was at Whitby Rd at the time... I was the one who was Cinderella in the school panto, and split her head open against the classroom door before going on stage. Stephen Appleby (did he really marry Megan Hughes?) was heard to quote the immortal line "Is she going to die, Miss?" as the blood poured down my face. Happy days!

Seeing mention of Goffs also made me smile - it was such a treat, when we went to the park, to go to Goff's for a little glass of Tizer, or one of those Neapolitan ice cream sandwiches that he used to cut from the block with a knife. We spent many happy hours in High Hazel's, or rambling about in Pig Lane :)

Anybody remember Joe's ice cream van? That was terrific ice cream...

It was nice too, to see Raymond Hall mentioned in the Attercliffe thread - he was a good friend of my parents and we kids spent many happy hours in the shop. We were allowed in the back room and loved to "sort out" the bottle corks for him. I think we drove Winnie (?) mad, but she never showed it.

I came here in search of information about the Pork Butchers, Mirfins (Murfins?) on Staniforth Rd as I find myself with an irresistable urge to sample Haslet once more before I die :-) I was going to blog about the shop, and was hoping to find some substantial info first.

Hi if you are Harry Whites grandchild you must be Hilary!!! I remember the twins very well Rose mearried a schoolmate of my brother he was called Eric Tonge. Unfortunately my dear brother died last year his name was Eric.

I hope I have you right and that you are Hilary as I remember you well I used to sit with your Grand Dad with his pigeons, he only kept pigeons for show and not for racing. Years after he had passed away I was at a pigeon show at Blackpool and got talking to a couple of me

I used to keep pigeons but had to give them up because of breathing problems I now live in Skegness and play Golf for an hobby. Strange to imagine anyone fron Jubilee Rd playing Golf!!!

Hi,

Can anyone help me please?

My mum (Moya) and her sisters (Janet, Jill and Barbara)/brother (Mike) lived in Darnell from the early 1940s until about the mid 1950s when they moved to Blackpool. My great grandfather had a grocers store. Their name was Slight and my mother and her siblings were best friends with the two sons of the local doctor- Dr Clark(e). I know that one of the sons was called David but I'm sorry I can't remember what the other one was called. I do know that they appear to have all got up to no good, playing down sewers etc.

It's my mum's 70th birthday in a few weeks and we are having a party. It would be great if we could track down Dr Clark(e)'s sons and invite them. Can anyone remember them or knows where they are now please?

Thank you so much
