Opposite the Byron. Now flats. StanRobinson 20-06-2005, 21:35 Was Turnups in the old Nether Edge Hall, "relocated" to Commercial Street then folded. Photos from the mid seventies recently in the Star Saturday supplement, perhaps copies available from the Star if you're interested? Why not simply consult your diary? (There's a joke in here, fellow forumers. Rockyblade is my big bruvva, see!!!) mattjon 22-06-2005, 11:26 Definitely called turn ups. As students we used to go in for a late drink. Always seemed to be empty with several odd people in. This included one gent who walked around making imaginary objects in the air. Somewhat lonely place but a drinks a drink! rockyblade 22-06-2005, 18:51 Thanks;sounds like Turnups to me.I wasnt the guy throwing imaginary objects in the air but I did have an imaginary bird with me.... tinker 22-06-2005, 19:00 if it was nether edge hall it was there in the 60s and i did go once think it was 1973 ish . i think it was up some stairs but cant remember too much as i had that much to drink that night i had blurred visions ..but it were good .. Fareast 24-06-2005, 08:55 Just as a matter of interest , the place had an older history than that as a nightclub. We used to go to the place when it was a dance hall as early as 1960. I don't know how long it had been open then. I'm sure they didn't sell alcohol either. We used to get as tanked as possible in the Stag and Byron before we went in . Also , I think it closed about midnight. It didn't have a "name" as such-----just known to us as , "Nether Edge Dance Hall. gasman 12-07-2005, 18:17 place your on about is the nether edge hall just around the corner from the union pub. used to go there around 1972-1973 time, brilliant dance floor fully sprung, must have been the best club dance floor at the time went there and northern soul was being played with everyone dancing the atmosphere was brilliant. two characters I remember were Russ davey ( who passed away recently) and Mopsie a black guy with a huge afro who was a brilliant dancer, like most great clubs it closed and i think it is now a block of flats..........typical Fareast 13-07-2005, 07:57 gasman, I think there may be a bit of a mix-up here. The Union pub is on Union Road , not far from the old Nether Edge Grammar School. It's the last building on Union Road and at the junction of Union Road , Cherrytree Road and Machon Bank. The , "Nether Edge Hall " , I mentioned was on Nether Edge Road [?] , just near the Byron pub. Are we talking about the same place ? I can't check it at the moment and the memory is fading a bit , these days ! Damon 13-07-2005, 08:25 Funnily enough, I was thinking that 2 different places were being discussed here too. Because 'Nether Edge Hall' (which I remember as Turn Ups) on Nether Edge Road near The Byron, was certainly nothing like 'a big house' (as mentioned in the first post). Also, the flats that are now in its place were already built by 1982 (again, the year mentioned in the first post). the white rose 16-11-2006, 10:15 hi rockyblade, ive just noticed this thread and wondered if anyone else has any recollections of turn ups. i used to go with a load of mates from psalter lane during 77-78, and it was one of the best clubs ive ever been to, because no-one seemed to know about it except the art college students so the dance floor was never crowded. ive just posted an entry on my main blog, linked to below (not the white rose of yorkshire sheff blog, the main blog) about my time on the turn of the 80s music scene, and i'd like to add some more stuff about turn ups in the comment trail if possible as in my eyes it was legendary. a club in the suburbs of sheff in the basement of a grand old victorian house! how groovy is that? :) angelamary 16-11-2006, 15:54 Just as a matter of interest , the place had an older history than that as a nightclub. Oh what memories come flooding back, i use to go their in the early 60,s, there wasa live band, cannot remember the name, and a buffet downstairs, two old dears in the cloakroom, taking your coat and giving u an identification ticket for when u wanted to leave, I would meet my friends in The Brinckcliffe pub, a lot of Sheffield Wednesday footballers were also in there, then we would stroll across to the dancehall for a wonderful nite, well until 10.30 when i had to go and catch the last bus home, my children don,t go out these days until that time. MikeJ 08-03-2007, 20:29 My friends organised a birthday bash at Nether Edge Hall in Nov 1973. rubydazzler 08-03-2007, 20:38 i used to go with a load of mates from psalter lane during 77-78, and it was one of the best clubs ive ever been to, because no-one seemed to know about it except the art college students so the dance floor was never crowded. Now, the above is so different from my recollections of the place. We liked it because the people who went there were mostly over 25s and a little bit more mature than the average club. It was always full - mind you the dance floor was minute so anymore than 30 or so dancing and you could hardly move! If only there was somewhere remotely like it today, I seem to remember that it was owned by Les Vickers and his wife, who then went on to open Fanny's at Owler Bar when they were hounded out of Turn-ups by the miserable people who lived nearby, always moaning about noise! pah! bookbinder 24-12-2008, 20:29 NICE TRY WELL AT LEAST SOMEONE SPELLED THE NAME RIGHT -[VICKERS]-BUT NOBODY HAS MENTIONED VICARS THE OLD LACARNOS AT THE BOTTOM OF LONDON ROAD ALSO RUN BY -[VICKERS]-BLOOMERS-FIVE WAYS or BARROWBOYS-AND IF ONLY THEY HAD TURNED STOKE HALL INTO A NIGHT CLUB [WOW]???? CHAIRBOY 25-12-2008, 08:05 I remember the Nether Edge Dance Hall in the 60's as I lived about 100 yards up the road! The dances were held on Tuesdays and Saturdays. It was then owned by the Snook family with Brian taking over from his father. Worthington E was then 2/6d a pint and downstairs was coffee and bridge rolls. Match of the Day could be viewed down there, usually at the same time Jeff Beck was causing a stomp with Hi Ho Silver Lining. The band was Keith Peters and two of my pals from the Halle, Richard Smith (drums) and Max Benn (saxophone/clarinet) played in it. Don Allison was a guitarist. You went up half a dozen steps to the pay desk, cloaks on the left, dance straight ahead and bar to the right. It was a wonderful, friendly venue and I cannot remember any trouble. A couple of Derbyshire cricketers attended from time to time and there was a good atmosphere. The Union pub was at Union Road with the 'cheerful' Audrey Barwell. The Byron Inn was opposite the dance hall and the Brincliffe Oaks Hotel had a bowling green then before the flats were built. The "Brincs" was often the meeting place before going to the dance which became a disco during the musicians' interval. Things changed and so did the dance hall which later became Turn Ups whereupon I'd moved on. Johnnie K Le 02-01-2009, 12:12 Nether Edge Hall was converted to Turn Ups late '74/early'75.I auditioned for the post of drummer/vocalist in Feb '75 ,I was offered the job but couldn't accept it straight away because I was commited to a tour on the continent with Monty Sunshine. However during the tour Turn Ups contacted me to start the 'gig' on my return.I started April '75,the keyboard player was a guy called Harry ? and we worked half an hour on ,half an hour off.We alternated with a DJ whose name escapes me,we also backed a cabaret artist for an hour each night. We worked 6 nights a week Mon/Sat.The beginning of the week was 8-00/1-00 am,and Fri.Sat. was 8-00/2-00 am.The gig lasted 6 months when the powers that were decided the club wasn't making enough money, and disposed of the live element of the show ie. the musicians and acts, and went complete disco finally closing the doors approx 2 yrs later. The 6 months I was there were amongst my happiest moments as a pro.'muso' I met some fantastic 'punters' and if the place was still open would still be there.I would love to hear from anyone who remembers those days. clogginchris 02-01-2009, 15:43 Used to go to Turn Ups a lot in the late 70s/early 80s - great place. Good atmosphere, tiny dance floor. It closed because local residents complained about the noise (can anyone remember what year?). I was there in the last night - everyone was walking out with mementos - I took a stool home! moodysoul1 05-01-2009, 18:01 Used to go to northern soul nites there in 1973. Think they were on thurs night.First introduction to northern soul met my husband there.Still together and still attending northern soul nites around country. gennki 05-01-2009, 18:42 I remember the Turn ups. As a child i lived just around the corner and remember climbing in through the toilet window to explore the place (as 9 or 10 year olds do ! )after it had closed down, that must have been around 1981-82. It seemed very big to me and very dark ! I don't know if it was true or not but was it once owned by Peter Stringfellow ? It was located just opposite the Byron pub. And the car parking access was from Ashland road. |
