View Full Version : Trains to Newquay
steelblade 17-11-2003, 09:49 Going to Newquay next year with 7 friends. We are trying to find the cheapest travel option.
Has anyone gone to Newquay by train? If so do you have a rough price and journey time?

steelblade 17-11-2003, 10:29 I nearly choked when I realised how much the train costs. I am now looking at mini bus hire. So anyone have any website addresses for good minibus hire firms?
I make it £54 each for a return on the National Express. 10 hour journey though, not nice.
steelblade 17-11-2003, 11:48 Thanks for that Sidla.
Don't think I could do the coach journey though, I'm sure it would be really uncomfortable.
I'm looking to hire a minibus now, if that fails we will each take our cars. I just want to be able to sleep and I don't think I could do that on a cramped coach.
Can't believe how much the trains are though, I didn't think they would be as expensive as they are.
fnkysknky 17-11-2003, 12:23 A minibus will be approx. £60/day plus you have your fuel to pay for (probably just over £100). . On top of that the driver has to be over 21 etc. Usually you'll find that you have to be 23 or over to be covered by the hire firm's insurance - below that and you'll have to sort your own out for the week.

Trains are very expensive but more comfort than the coach IMO. I think the coach would be almost unbearable. I'd suggest driving as the most suitable option, although you may need 2 cars so perhaps you could hire a mini bus but that is further expence. It's a long drive but perhaps you could share the driving. I've done the drive myself a few times and found that doing it through the night was the best option for me. I'm not sure about cost...depends what you drive...other than that coach might be cheapest option.
For 7 people you could hire a people carrier, may be cheaper.
steelblade 17-11-2003, 15:05 Thanks for all the responses.
Myself and my boyfriend actually went to Newquay this year. We drove down in our own car.
However my friends are saying lets all go together. They don't believe me that it will be cheaper if we all just drive ourselves there. Plus in my opinion I would rather have the car if I want to go off from the group for a day out. Although these people are my friends, I don't really want to be with them every waking moment! :D
I can see me having to get my bossy head on (as usual) and telling them we are going in seperate cars and that's that!!
I would think that, as with all train journeys, if you book far enough in advance you can get there much cheaper.
For instance, you could get from Sheffield to London for £11 return up until at least 6 months ago, possibly still can, if 4 of you go and you book early enough.
Something similar is bound to exist, one of these super duper saver wavers or something
But you will have to TELEPHONE for that, they rarely put special offers on the net
angelgirluk 24-09-2006, 16:57 Hi there
I am often down in Newquay and the coach journey there takes the Michael! It's often almost 12 hours long, with a change in Birmingham. The change in Birmingham can sometimes be a hassle (for more info on the coach PM me). I have flown before though from Leeds straight to Newquay. It's a direct flight, takes no time at all. You have to change in Bristol on your return journey though, but again this is a really short flight and totally hassle free!!!!!!!! Book far enough in advance and it's dead cheap www.airsouthwest.com
Hope that helps!

CHAIRBOY 24-09-2006, 17:08 There is an airport at Newquay, check if there are any value fares?

Internal flights cause a huge amount of pollution and should be avoided at all costs, if not banned.
MattTurner 24-09-2006, 20:22 If you split the journey at birmingham its far cheaper, two returns, one birmingham-sheffield, one brimingham-par.
Buy the tickets via the virgin trains website on the cheapo section (not available on national rail/the train line) and you can get down there for 15 quid.
Buy a local par-newquay ticket for the last part of the journey when you get there(but beware that the trains arn't frequent, it may be quicker to get to truro and get the bus to newquay from there). You wont be able to get the cheaper tickets from V-Trains if you include the last leg on the journey spec.
Matt
p.s. I have friends in Cornwall, it took a long time to find these deals!!!!
You can fly from Manchester to Newquay Airport for £13 each way with BMI baby, and the train from Sheffield to Manchester Airport is reasonably cheap and great.
However, the flights end on the 28th Oct (or thereabouts) and won't start again til just before the holiday season next year.
