View Full Version : Forget Radio 1 - I'm tuning to 2

I now actually prefer Radio 2 (compared to 1). I find the news on Radio 1 to be very patronising and spoon-fed. They always feel the need to get "sound bites" off members of the public and it's pretty cringey. Radio 2 on the other hand plays similar stuff to Radio 1 and has less annoying trailers regarding safe sex etc!

also, Radio 2 doesnt constantly play "urban" music 24/7

it has a really good alterntive show with some class music

Lol, yeah I can't imagine Jeremy Vine getting down with the hoods

But going back to Radio 1, they play as many "adverts" as Hallam or any other local station. Also their playlist is so strict that sometimes you get a top 10 song that was never played on Radio 1! At least commercial radio plays a wide range, even if some are awful!

PS. Rant over

"Togdom" comes to us all one day........

(I switched when Sara Cox started doing the breakfast show - I really couldn't get on with her style. Funnily enough I think I was in the same boat as about .5 million other listeners) The only thing I listen to on Radio One now is "Mark and Lard".

Yeah give me Steve Wright and Johnny Walker anyday, mind you I do sometimes listen to R4 as well. Depends what mood I am in. May even switch back to R1. R5 is best for sport.

I just wanted to let everybody know that "Steve Wright in the Afternoon" is the very best entertainment show in Britain (radio or t.v) ever.

The afternoon drifts happily by when he's on the air. The 'Big Quiz', 'The Factoids' and 'Ask Elvis' are just inspired brilliance!

Just had to share that.

I get to listen to a lot of radio on Saturday mornings/lunchtimes. Jonathon Ross and the comedy shows afterwards are brilliant. Maybe just a sign of me getting older, but I rarely listen to Radio 1 these days. The main reason I stopped listening to Radio 1 was the annoying, talentless wench Sara Cox. I bought myself an MP3 player for the walk home from work instead.

You're not looking for a plug on Miles Mendoza's 'Website of the Day' by any chance, are you?! ;)

Only kidding!

I love the Steve Wright Show too, most of the time - but just sometimes Steve's smugness gets to me. But he does help the afternoons to fly by. (Although quite often now I'm listening to Colin and Edith on Radio 1 till sometime between 3-4 pm).

Scott Mills - it's really embarrassing, but I've occasionally started listening to and enjoying his show. I'll have Radio 1 on for C & E, and sometimes just leave the radio on, and his show will come on. 'Urban' music must have some sort of seepage(?) effect - listen to it enough, and it'll get under your skin! :suspect:

But I still miss Mark and Lard terribly - Bring Them Back (together)!!

Just one example of the sillyness of the programme!

I love Radio two as well!

It's an age thing maybe? I love listening to Steve Wright etc and listened to him in the eighties when he was on Radio one.
All of us who listened to him then and still like him are probably my age - heading fast towards 40!! :)

Radio 2 is loads better than R1.. They don't force you to listen to the latest chart tripe, and of course they have Steve Wright in the afternoon, which used to be a Radio 1 show but has now migrated to R2.

Just s shame they don't have Pick of the Pops on a Saturday afternoon with Dale Winton any more :( I liked listening to those oldies.

The bloke should have his vocal chords ripped out and a giant inflatable gob stopper should be stuffed in his mouth, then it should be inflated very very slowly until his head explodes. He is even more annoying that Sarah Cox!! Him laughing at every second word that comes out of his mouth, his bloody team laughing with him. Those factoids.. GGGrrrrrrrrr

Glad I'm not the only one! Radio Two on a Saturday is best for me - Jonathan Ross and then Dermott O'Leary!! Yay!!!!!

What I really want though, is a radio station that fits between the two demographics - feel too old for R1 and not yet ready for some of the golden oldies of R2. There must be some 30-something indie-music loving, John-Peel-was-our-leader type people who also feel this lack?!?!

I listen to Radio 6 and XFM online, but it's not much help with whiling the hours away when queuing through Woodseats in my sadly digital-free car on the way home . . . somebody spot that niche and run with it!!!!

Or, yeah - or just bring back Mark and Lard . . .

I think it's time someone told the truth about Radio 2. I am writing from experience, as I have been 'listening in' on and off over the past few years, and have reached the conclusion that I must never, ever on any account listen to one more second of this dreadful bilge again. The main problem is the music. Their playlist at the moment is riddled with the most pathetic drivel and represents a new low, even for them. That loathsome duet with Dr John/Randy Newman. The song that goes, 'I Love This Town' - what complete poo-poo smelly bum. And all the endless 'Dadrock' they play (Keane, Coldplay, Oasis etc - yes, Oasis are Dadrock). AND, what's with 'the new Annie Lennox single' a few months ago. Who on earth is interested in Annie Lennox's new single? Even Annie Lennox isn't, surely? Radio 2 assumes we are all in a state of arrested development and need to be treated as though all this old bobbins is actually worth listening to and is in some way 'relevant'. I heard Van Morrison's 'new single' today and lurched for the OFF button within the first nauseating minute. Why does he bother? It's just worn out, tired, lazy, complacent wubbish and he must die. And the whole network is like this. Just the same old tat recycled over and over again and over again.

Did any of us need, 'The Duran Duran Story'? (Er, no). Isn't Jools Holland a laugh! (Er, no). Roland Rivron, anyone? (Er, no).And as for Steve Wright In The After*******noon! Oh God! Save us! Miles Mendoza????? Am I the only person listening who wants to club him to death? Take it from me, listening to Radio 2 is a total waste of time.....

Apart from 'The Organist Entertains'. Yes, yes, it is infantile, lobotomised twaddle, but it is honest and demographically appropriate. Radio 2 isn't for us, neither is Radio 1 (I cannot even begin to find the words to describe how terrible this station is). Radio 4 is worth it for the occasional gem, which is usually about bees.....

Surely Radio 3 is the only station for grown-ups (except in the evenings - apart from Saturday). If I were a rich man......I'd launch Radio Snooty and everything would be alright. In fact, it would be grate...............

On the Urban Music note, why does it get so much airtime on Radio 1?

Is 50 cent really so popular? I don't know a single person that likes him, or his music.

The BBC have a digital sister station to Radio 1 - 1extra - why not keep all that sort of music on there?

On Friday night, R1 has Tim Westwood talking 'big dog style' about all the "maddest, darkest, sickest tunes to come out of the Bronx and the Eastside crew, you know what I is sayin" all night. Why? If people want to listen to it, tune in to 1extra.

I see it as special interest - not generic music for the typical Radio 1 listener.

Urban music (if that's what we call it) might be in the charts, and Radio 1 tries to reflect the charts, but to be honest I don't think the charts reflect what's popular these days - I mean who over the age of 15 ever buys singles now?

Mind you, Radio 1 also has 'The Lockup', which is a punk/rock show, and I dont resent that. So maybe I'm just stating opinion as fact.

No, Geoff, you're not alone! 'Ask Elvis' was funny the first couple of times, but now it's just cringeworthy. When 'Ask Elvis' threatens, I usually turn over to Scott Mills. :o Actually, I'm listening to Steve Wright less and less nowadays.....

Radio Peel - I like the sound of that.

You won't believe it, LordSnooty, but I really enjoyed that North Korean documentary series too! Surprisingly informative.

I was at a loose end one evening and decided to do something different - I twiddled with the tuner and Bob's your uncle!

Not as rivetting as Radio Tirana was before the 'Iron Curtain' collapsed, but a brave try.

Chris Evans is back on the Radio. He is currently doing a bank holiday show on Radio 2.

Doesn't sound half as obnoxious as he did when he was on the breakfast show on radio 1.

Perhaps he has mellowed with age...

Being obnoxious is a requirement to being on the Radio 1 breakfast show.

I listen to the odd bit of Radio 2, but I find the best music station by miles is 6music. Great combination of session music, classics and new stuff, music documentaries and gigs.

Why is it that all the best output of the BBC (BBC 3 and 4 and 6 music and BBC7) are on either digital TV or radio?

I think you've answered your own question there, Yoda. Digital Radios aren't quite as expensive as they were and you get loads more choice. I've has a digital radio for quite a while (I can boast of having two, one at work and another beside my bed) and really recommend them. No messing around finding stations which means I come across programmes I wouldn't normally have noticed (World Service for example).

And I like the scrolling-text feature which displays additional information (like the current song being played. This is great for Classic FM because you don't have to wait for the 20 minute movement to finish before you know what and who it is).

Go buy one, Yoda!
