spirit guide 02-02-2009, 15:03 all the best finding a well trained puppy... I thin k more realistic if you go into having a puppy, thinking that ur whole house will get chewed up... its rare to find a well trained puppy.... ur meant to train them.
i got 7 week old jack russel pups for sale £150 but there not trained apart from to eat sleep drink
For what it's worth imho i'd seriously consider an older dog - perhaps 12 months or so. Then they are usually clean (important with a toddler) and may have some basic training.
I'd never have a puppy again.
Moonbird 02-02-2009, 15:43 How about this dog (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=452154) it sounds a nice dog and is in dire need of a home permanent or otherwise.
KATIEB_23 02-02-2009, 16:09 U just beat me to it Moonbird! :D
kerryl1989 02-02-2009, 16:22 plz dont write on the wall if you going to be rude, (btw i ahve owned a dog b4) thnx
cooljules 02-02-2009, 16:33 why a puppy???????? esp with a little baby...it would be like having another baby! why not get a older dog....
plz dont write on the wall if you going to be rude, (btw i ahve owned a dog b4) thnx
This isn't a wall, it's a forum ;)
If you're going to make daft requests which will affect the welfare of a defenceless animal, you're going to get replies setting you straight - and quite rightly so
Living in the same house as a dog which somebody else looks after isn't the same as owning and training your own dog
I'm guessing there was a good reason why you weren't 'allowed' to take 'your' dog when you left home
If you're missing the company of a dog, how about walking dogs for a rescue centre, that way you get to hand them back without having full time responsibility
kerryl1989 02-02-2009, 19:10 i wrote on the wall for information about a dog, i don't think it is anyones business if you don't have a dog to sell then don't write on here and for STRIX the dog is my dads but i raised her as i was at home pregnant that is y i could not take her as she is my dads NOW get a life, (GOD y are people so rude)
i did not start this page for a discussion, i started it to find out information about a dog, i am brilliant with animal and who are any of you to question that when yo do not know me. that was very hurtful what strix said as i love Cassie (my dads dog) that was a cruel thing to say.

I don't see anyone being rude  - just offering good advice. Like already said you are not going to find a well trained puppy - they are babies that need teaching - you can't presume that they are going to be well behaved because puppies generally are naughty - they chew, make a mess, require loads of training and attention. As far as I can see, people have only suggested that a slightly older dog may be better for you with having a young daughter as it is likely to have recieved some training already so you won't be starting off with a whirlwind of a dog.
kerryl1989 02-02-2009, 19:26 so you dont see when he/ she put i'm guessing there was a good reason why you weren't 'allowed' to take 'your' dog when you left home. you telling me that was not rude?
kerryl1989 02-02-2009, 19:27 and the TRAINING was meant for the dog, i have raised a puppy before i know what they need, i have the wrecked shoes to prove it
pets@home 02-02-2009, 19:28 i understand your desire to have a dog, i would miss mine if i left home , but i would think twice about having a puppy as it would be hard & time consuming .not to mention the mess & damage a pup could do ,if i was you i would be looking at rehoming or fostering a older dog ,.I say this as i see loads of puppies go into rescues after they have become older. There are a lot of older dogs just begging for someone to love them+ they will proberly be used to young children. please remember that this is only advice & i am not judging your care for a dog .this is a pet owners section so members are just worried about pets hope you`ll understand
so you dont see when he/ she put i'm guessing there was a good reason why you weren't 'allowed' to take 'your' dog when you left home. you telling me that was not rude?

You wrote about people being rude before strix even wrote that comment :loopy:

The way you worded your first post leads people to presume this. You put that you weren't allowed to take her

I have responded to the information YOU gave at the start of the thread (which is how forums work). Now you've CHANGED the information you wish us to have
I volunteer for a rescue centre, occasionally foster, sometimes homecheck, and am often the first person people contact if they want information about either rehoming a dog or adopting a dog
Now, perhaps YOU should stop being rude to me? ;)
kerryl1989 02-02-2009, 19:35 yes i was not allowed because she is theres, i could not argue as she is theres, not for the lack of trying.
ye because i got a pm from someone
and i would loved a rescue dog iv been trying to find out information, but i just dont know where to start as i bought my last one from a breeder, if you know where i could start that would be helpfulWell let's start again properly :)
What size of dog are you looking for? Do you have any breeds in mind? What breed was your last dog? How much grooming are you intending to do? Would you be okay with a long haired breed which needs lots of grooming, or do you prefer to have a short haired breed and vacuum lots?
Would you be able to cope with a small/medium sized dog who's fantastic with kids but a nightmare to train, incredibly cute, and enjoys destroying your house if not fully crate trained?
kerryl1989 02-02-2009, 19:41 i have not changed anything i said i was not allowed, i did not hae to sell people y but i felt like i had to as you made out i was forbidden to take her and that was not the case, now if you are no help buzz off

There are a number of animal rescues you could try in and around Sheffield and the chances are one of them will have at least one dog that you will fall for.
kerryl1989 02-02-2009, 19:44 ok thnx topb
kerryl1989 02-02-2009, 19:47 hi thank you everyone but im going to look at the kennels.
Hi
I'm not being a cock, but I've noticed you're a 1989'er. Have you made sure you have enough set a side each month to look after a dog properly?
i have not changed anything i said i was not allowed, i did not hae to sell people y but i felt like i had to as you made out i was forbidden to take her and that was not the case, now if you are no help buzz offYou're not getting this are you? This isn't a handbag you're shopping for, and you're addressing a whole load of people who spend a heck of a lot of time not only looking for homes for dogs, but picking up the pieces after somebody's whim to own a dog runs out and they are dumping the poor thing again (which often takes even MORE time up)
I've offered to put your careless comments aside and help you with finding the right dog, but you seem to be hell bent on arguing that you haven't said things that you have
This is a discussion forum, so it isn't for you to say who contributes to a thread or otherwise. If you start a discussion topic/thread, it is available for every forum member to contribute to

kerryl1989,
I wholeheartedly recommend taking in a foster dog. I'll bet you could even find a puppy who needs someone to look after them and give them some training.
By fostering a dog, you will have a stronger support system in place (and we can ALL use a safetynet) than you are likely to get with a pup you buy, or even adopt from a rescue.
What about perhaps volunteering as an "alternate" fosterer, and take in fostered dogs for fosterers going on holiday or simply needing a break? Speaking as a fosterer myself, my husband and I were very poorly for several weeks, and I really could have used someone to take in our foster dog Betty for a couple of weeks.
And not to make pooches sound like handbags, but fostering is actually a good way to "try on" dog breeds and personalities, and get a real, honest, hands-on feel for what both you and your dog will require lifestyle-wise.
why is everyone slagging off spring st kennels, they do their best trying to rehome the dogs which ALL have been chucked out and abandend by all you lovley sheffield residents. and the rspca should be ashamed of themselves i reported an injured cat which was suffering they told me they may come out, 2 days after i reported it i had to save it myself its now living with me. and this is an organisaion which aims to prevent animal cruelty.
geerarffe 04-02-2009, 10:56 who's slagged spring street off?
And the rspca put dogs to sleep over the smallest thing, if its just a little bit food proud they wont evan give it a chance, im sorry but its just i think spring st could do with a little more credit after all - do they kill dogs if they are food proud? no they dont. anyways just like to say sorry- i wasnt having ago. how is everyone ;)
Nobody has slagged Spring Street off - far from it
It's hardly a dog haven, but we appreciate that the staff there do a fantastic job under tough conditions
I'm not happy about some of the failings in the system they have to work within, but that's a different kettle of fish ;)
