View Full Version : Do you live in sheffield?
Sheffield1st 18-06-2005, 23:17 What do you think is unique and special about sheffield? What would you like the city to be famous for in ten years time?
The company who have been helping to develop sheffield into a leading cosmopolitan city, Sheffield First, want your help in making Sheffield even better.
If you answer these questions on their website you'll even be entered into a prize draw to win one of 70 great prizes.
Bloomdido 19-06-2005, 00:14 In ten years time I reckon Sheffield will be a suburb of Leeds. I can see apartments springing up all over but not much else. A relief road for the Don Valley is on the cards and I reckon you should flatten the city centre (apart from Fargate and Pinstone Street) and start again.
Leeds and Birmingham put us to shame. Can't comment on Manchester as I have only seen bits but we can't get by on being the only City in a National Park forever.
We have a millenium Gallery and a Winter Garden, a pretty fountain and that's about it. Meadowhall has sucked the life-blood out of the City Centre and I can't understand -what is the attraction of Coles and Debenhams exactly?
Good things - Crime is lower here that in just about anywhere else in the Country and the University has a serious reputation. I lived in various parts of London for the best part of 20 years before moving back here and It was sooo lovely to be back but then I am biased, I was born here.

Bloomdido 19-06-2005, 01:22 Thanks. My experience of Hallam was some years ago when it was a poly.

and now its probably the best university in the UK for computing, with european and partial global recognition with a LOT of reputation ;) and it also does very well in a lot of other subjects... but I only know about my field that I study :)
have been quite surprised with the responses from some major UK and multi-national companies I've had interviews with for placements with what they've said about the students they've had from Hallam, there are even a few company's that will only take Hallam students due to their reputation :?

Yep, Im on an 'IT' course at Hallam and it is pretty good in that field.
As for the City Centre, yes it is in desperate need of a revamp. You wouldnt think it was the 4th city by looking at the City Centre.

it needs some work yeah, but I actually like the big town feel of Sheffield... it makes it feel more homey :) and I think we're 5th largest ;) although lets not get started, that debate has been done too much!

These developers are just out to make money and don't really give a damn about Sheffield or it's people.
The thing I like most about Sheffield is it's very lack of big city cosmopolitam atmosphere. Why should we have to slavishly follow the example of Leeds or Manchester to be considered a 'good' place to live.

Ok, but we're 4th largest - see post http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?postid=372323#post372323
When including the whole UK and not just England, Glasgow leapfrogs us and puts us down to 5th.
PS. The plural of University is "Universities". ;)
