View Full Version : Unusual weight problem
SilentStatic 18-06-2005, 21:04 I'm tall and skinny and haven't gained any weight in the last several years, even though I'm on a permanent seefood diet. As an example, a week ago I went to Oriental Buffet in the afternoon and had three full plates of Chinese food, plus desert. I came back to my flat and had a few snacks. In the evening I went to the Grinder to meet a few people and finished off their dinners. I then went down to a BBQ party in Broomhall to consume burgers, pasta and many cakes...
I do realise that a lot of people would love to be in the position of eating like a pig and never gaining any weight. I've not been complaining about that, however...
This year I have started losing weight - nearly a whole stone thus far, and I didn't exactly have much to lose in the first place :o
So, a lanky 6 foot 3, but only 9 stone 3. Should I be worried? If not, when should I start getting worried?
your probably eating the wrong stuff...
I suffer from the same thing, high metabolism... your body can burn off the energy quicker than you can eat it... usually means you need a much higher intake than most...
i generally try and get at least the reccomended intake of 2500 calories... generally more...
I've figured how to gain weight if I want to, and will probably go back onto the scheme once I move to manchester and am sorted again... basically cramming in a lot of carbs and protein, including some protein shakes and making sure to get a good workout at the gym...
4000+ calories a day and you'll not loose weight ;)
There would be no harm in going to see the doctor just to make sure your ok! and he would be the best person to ask anyway:thumbsup:
1Man&hisBMW 18-06-2005, 21:30 Maybe you're a lean, mean fat burning machine... (thanks to G.Foreman for that)
sauerkraut 18-06-2005, 21:35 Excessive weight loss can be a sign of (late onset) diabetes. Don't want to be a scare-monger but best to get a doctor to check it out!
SilentStatic 18-06-2005, 21:38 Well you have just scared me :(
Xafier, what's that 'scheme' you mentioned? I can't do the gym, but if people have suggestions for types of food (prefereably suitable for a low budget) then I'd be happy to try. Well, unless someone tells me to eat more veg :P
*goes back to eating crackers*
scheme is basically eat crap loads of good protein, eg meats and nuts... and plenty of carbs... make sure you cram in way more calories than your body needs and exercise well... helps build and keep muscles and reduces fat...
whilst i was cramming in lots of good food like that, using some protein shakes to save an extra meal or two and going to the gym I managed an extra 3/4 stone in a couple of months... but my gym membership finished and i'm moving to manchester so didnt bother renewing... not sure of my current weight... just above where i started i think...
might just go back to the eating tons and just workout myself with jogging, pushups situps and a few weights maybe... dunno yet... but being skinny sucks...
although i'm like 9 1/2 stone and 5ft 10 so not quite as bad as you... maybe you should still visit a doctor... i'm sure you'd be classified as rather underweight and maybe there is an underlying problem such as diabetes
how old are you SS? My mate was like that and couldn't put weight on for love nor money. Now he's heading towards 30 and beginning to get a bit of a belly on him....
SilentStatic 18-06-2005, 22:09 I'm 22. Perhaps I should drink more alcohol and try to get a beer belly :P
I'll wait a few weeks to see if there's any improvement, then get registered with a GP I s'pose...
I had the same problem when I was 18. I'm 6' tall and had the following changes happen over the years:
Age 18: 11 stone, very lean and athletic, chest 107 cm, waist 72 cm
Age 26: 16 stone, muscular and athletic, chest 127 cm, waist 79 cm
Age 39: 16 stone, fat and lazy, chest 122 cm, waist 101 cm
Be careful what you wish for.....

 You do seem to be underweight for your height, so a trip to your GP seems to be your best option. S/He will probably carry out a thyroid function test (TFT), which is a simple blood test to check for hyper/hypo-thyroidism. If it is a thyroid problem, it may be a simple case of taking tablets to correct the problem.
On the other hand, I only have to look at anything edible and I just pile on the weight. I wouldn't mind having your problem for a little while:wink:
Paul2412 19-06-2005, 10:27 i've got the same problem so i've joined a gym. the guy there says drink 2 litres of water a day, lots of food like chicken and a fairly intensive weight training program and is convinced that within a month i'll be putting on alot of weight. tho i'm only 6ft 1 and weigh 11st 5.
Don_Kiddick 19-06-2005, 10:35 My wife was bullied at school for being skinny ( I was bullied for being fat! :loopy: )
=What do people want?=
A N Y W A Y... She was 6.5 stone when we met.
We got married & she found it hard to get a wedding frock.
About a year after she clapped weight on when she got pregnant to a joint crushing 7stone :o
She's 6.5 stone again 11 years on.
I'm still 17 stone. (Twice her plus 1x son and pet dog)
Be proud of what you are.
Love yourself not for having a problem but for being unique!
metalman 19-06-2005, 20:28 Tapeworm maybe? Go check for those segments NOW... :)

Water - drink loads of it.
Chicken - eat loads of it.
Gym - doh! Ah well, two out of three ain't bad...
I realise I'll sound stupid, but I didn't know you could go to a gym and gain weight - I thought it would burn off the calories
Will lifting weights in my flat do anything?
*must remember not to stand sideways at the next meet*

chillicat 19-06-2005, 22:57 You've mentioned your input, but not your *ahem*... output. Is there anything unusual there? Do you have a very active job/lifestyle that might be burning up calories? If you are losing weight despite eating lots, getting down to the GP does sound like good advice.

Lifting weights will definitely help in building up body mass when you're eating a high calorie/protein diet to sustain it.
The tall-and-thin body type is referred to as the 'ectomorph' type on bodybuilding websites, and a search on Google or one of the major bodybuilding website (such as bodybuilding.com) for this should provide some information on suitable diets and exercises.
spiffymonkey 20-06-2005, 07:50 I thought I had a similar problem. I'm 6'3" and managed to maintain the same weight for several years. From being 18 to 23 (I'm 25 now) I was 10st 4lb, give or take. Last Christmas I went up to 11st 6lb, and I'm now around 12 stone. When it starts piling on, it does it quickly! I just need to keep myself fit now to make sure the weight is muscle, not fatty lumps :)
