View Full Version : Late night coffee bars?

I know there's old threads on this but I thought we need an up-to-date one...

Where are the late night coffee bars in Sheffield centre? Or even Ecclesall Road? For people who don't want to go dancing, or anywhere with loud music, who just want to chat... is such a thing possible? Forget Melbourne, New York, Sheffield is lagging behind London in this respect!!

And by late I mean after midnight!

Erm - you may have noticed it's freezing cold - who on earth would want to go out for a coffee when you can make your own in your kitchen?

Need conversation? Go on the web :-)

I agree fella, I know a lot of people who's body clock goes until 5-6am and would love somewhere to hang out late doors on a night off, Sheffield has a somewhat limited leisure trade considering the size of the city... I think the main thing holding sheffield back is ridiculous property rental prices in the city centre, this has stopped independent traders trying to do something like this...
If the commercial property in town takes a similar percentage drop in rent as the housing market takes in value, the city would benefit hugely in my opinion...
As for your comment Vanos, sitting in the house on the internet is not my idea of living, as Bill Hicks would say eventually everyone will be locked in their houses havin pizzas shot through their letter boxes... get out there, support local business, myspace friends aren't real friends...

It is mine at 4 am when I can't sleep. I'l browse the news, things of interest or even converse with people. Meeting new folk in a shop at 4am is a little odd unless you are off your nut.

PS you posting on here means you are half accepting of the solution.

Erm, no, I'm not, you posting that is like someone writing a thread saying "what's a nice restaurant?" and you replying "I like a pot noodle and BBC iPlayer", it's neither informative or the right attitude, I wouldn't go to a late night coffee shop to meet people, I'd go there with people I already know, so I'm afraid my friend it is you who are a little off your nut

I doubt the op was meaning doing that. You'd go to one of your own gaffs. As for being off my nut - correct, I live in the real world.

Okie dokie, you definitely had the last word there boss, maybe you and your real world should stay off of the 'Going out in Sheffield' section and stay in the 'Sitting in my house playing with my bebo' section... I'm sure you'll learn everything you need in life from wiki

Ok guys so you can sit in and have coffee but I think there is a point to be made that sometimes after a few drinks you are not always ready to go home, a late night coffee house would be ideal, to sit and have a chat before everyone going home, there was a place nr to john lewis but that has closed now, and that was always good for that type of thing, you could come out of a pub or club, sit and have a bite to eat and a drink before heading home.

Matt S

Exactly, not to mention the countless members of bar staff who've spent all night serving drunk people and maybe don't want to go to a bar with their workmates after they've finished their shift

That's right yes. :hihi:

We'd usually go to a casino or a chilled club, they do serve coffee too - but if you are unimaginative then you will have a problem finding somewhere. :o

The idea of having a late night coffee shop is a great one, but one that Sheffield can't support. Asking why people would want to go and buy coffee after midnight is as ridiculous as aking why they'd want to pay £3 for a coffee anytime, when they can make a decent cup in their home for 10p.

It's a question of percentages. In London and other cosmopolitan cities, there will be a greater percentage of people who will stay out and late and, yes, drink coffee. In Sheffield? No.

Sheffield is not a cosmopolitan city full of 'bohemians' chatting about Kerouac, regardless of what some people would like to think. If a place like Bragazzies stayed open late, it would be fantastic. But by midnight you'd just get a bunch of white shirters peeing against the window and asking why they aren't serving ham baps instead of that foreign muck of ciabatta with salami, rocket and mozzarrella. Or students on speed chewing on sugar sticks.

It wouldn't be worth the hassle for any businness.

As I said my body clock runs till around 5/6am, I don't consider myself bohemian just because I'd heard of John Martyn before he died and I can't think of anything worse than going to a casino after work to be surrounded by a bunch of gambling addicts losing their money.
If you read my first post I said that it was an unsustainable idea in Sheffield, not because I think there's a lack of demand (in so much as I don't think it would be full of ****** up morons looking for a fight as there's plenty of places for them to go, I think you greatly underestimate the amount of young people who now live on a much later timescale than the usual 9-5) but the rents of city centre properties are too high to allow independent locals to even attempt it.
What I don't like is the fact that someone asks 'why aren't there any coffee shops open late?' and someone replies 'urgh you're a weirdo wanting to stay out late, buy an esspresso machine and read the times online'... I think you're a weirdo for getting up at 7am, but I don't put that do I you patronising tit

LOL.

Yes, I'm not wanting to go to a coffee bar and 3am and meet new friends... when me and a friend have been to the theatre/cinema/restaurant of an evening, we just want to carry on drinking (alcohol or non-alcohol) in an environment where we can hear each other! eclair you are spot on.

And chinaski, you say Sheffield isn't a cosmopolitan city... well from what I gather, it wants to be.

Are there even any late night pubs?

Proof you are a blinkered fool with zero experience of such places. Your local ex sheff wednesday chairman has some superb facilities around the city and they are free to drink in, you aren't forced to gamble or consume alcohol - hell you could even have a top notch meal !

The fact your last line is a feeble insult speaks volumes.

Go to Napoleons casino on ecclesall road, try it - you will need to join so take a utility bill with you on the first (and hopefully not the last) visit.

Let me know what you think.

Good to see you held the punters in such high regard.

To the op - the banner casino is pretty chilled upstairs, used to be bustling on a thurs / fri / sat but not so these days. Great for an alternative none music club.

You dont have a great opinion of people of sheffield, I think people would love a late cafe, as I would not describe all of sheffield as you have. I am not orginally from sheffield but I find the way you have described the people who live here not very nice, and not everyone is as you have described. So out of interest are you a do you wear a white shirt on a night out and pee against windows?

Sheffield does not have a great image, this is certainly true. Even some Southerners now do not rate Sheffield and can still think fondly of the city when the steel industry was in its heyday. HOWEVER, I have been in Sheffield for a very long time, and I have seen it changed. I do not think that we are that bad as a city. Seriously. If there were decent jobs, I'd stay in Sheffield, as the quality of life is pretty high in comparison to some other cities in the UK. This is pretty true. If Sheffield holds itself well, I think it could be another friendly and vibrant city like Dublin.

I think that there is a place for late night cafes/bars. A lot of Sheffielders still do like their drinks, and chats in pubs. I do not see how this cannot be fused with others who like to drink non-alcoholic drinks too?

I don't think a bar caters for this crowd, some kind of "cafe", where people know that it isn't a place to pick up the opposite sex, and nor is it a place where people enjoy loud music. Just decent chatters and drinkers who like a decent coffee, or a night cap with their friends after a night out, and do not want to hog the restaurant because they want to close or something. Something in the city centre would be nice actually. The Green Room does seem to be this kind of halfway house, as I ordered a coffee in there before, and they do a decent coffee as well. They used to play music, but that is not on every night though. So it can be a good venue for late night caps. I do not know if The Forum serves hot drinks til late 1am either.

There is a coffee place in the West One complex area, but I do not think that it opens til that late, and it also serves cake!

I was in West One the other day and noticed that the unit in the centre which used to be the coffee shop Utopia and then was the Moroccan restaurant has now become a place which claims to serve coffee and snacks until late. I looked for a menu and precise opening times outside but couldn't see any and was in too much of a hurry to go in. I think the name may be something like Eat 360 or something like that. I too liked the idea of a place which served coffee and food a bit later on in the evening - don't know how often I'd really go but nice to know it's there!

Bago, you are very right... Sheffield is a great place to live but when everything shuts down at 5.30 it'll never compete with London...

God that place is fab, have been in lunch and in the evening. They do serve till late which is good, wish they open up something simular but till later than 1pm thats all. I like a drink but there are times when before I go home to my bed after a night of dancing I would love just to sit have a natter about the night over a hot steamy coffee and light snack. rather than a kebab or pizza on the street corner trying to hail a taxi. At least i could order a taxi whilst having a coffee

This is one thing I think Sheffield is sorely lacking - there's nothing nicer than a good, late-night, chilled, comfy and friendly cafe - not just for coffee, but fab hot chocolates, a range of good teas, games boards, occasional & varied entertainment (in the form of non-intrusive musicians, small drama things, fortune telling, etc etc - a nice diversion but not too off-putting to those who just want a drink, nibbles and a chat). Big beanbags, comfy swivel chairs, floor cushions, deep leather sofas... I'd love it!

I have been to a few forum meets in the Devonshire Cat, and it does do a quiet boardgames kind of night on a midweek, which I was surprised at. It was pretty good. :) Hey, if you don't go out, then you won't know. I was quite surprised myself.

Also, the other weekend, I went into Dempsey's, and I do like the quieter downstairs compared to the busy dancefloor of the upstairs. Again, pretty good! :)

I think it is the whole general laidback friendly atmosphere which makes me sell Sheffield to others. Despite the fact that, it had a bad reputation on some online website about it being a chav city, or fightings in nightclubs, and so forth. There are good decent areas, and enjoyable nights, which is not a meat market, and nor is it a hostile atmosphere.
