You may have seen my thread before - but what it is is we have a 5year old staffy black and white....... she is the most loving little dog around and loves attention and cuddle and loves to lick you to death.........

but we cant keep her in our flat so we need someone who would look after our dog for around 3 months while we get a new flat were we can have pets again......

we love her to bits and dont want to get rid of her permentatly, just until the lease is over on this and we can move

hope someone can help xx

I hope you find a suitable temporary home cheeky :(

do you have any pics of her, and can you tell us a bit more about her? sometimes that helps

(sorry, I'm rubbish with staffies, so every one I've had here has wound up going for my own dog :( )

How can you be sure you'll get somewhere in three months? Not being awkward, just wondering whether there'd be a chance that the 'foster family' might end up being a permanent arrangement!

there's a thread running about renting with pets SHsheff, which suggests that finding pet accommodation isn't as hard as it has been in the past, with contact details for at least one agency which is more helpful than average

I was asking, Strix, cos my boy would love to 'have a dog', but I'm unwilling to commit to years of dog-ownership due to my working full time and him being a growing-up teenager... we're currently considering fostering support dogs for around six months at a time (hard though it would be to let the loved one go of course) so was just wondering about the reality of this particular dog truely going back to his owner after three months. :)

I suppose it would be a good idea to contact an agency such as the RSPCA or Dogs Trust, and see if they are able to offer 'back up' in this venture, taking the dog for rehoming if the 'fosterer' is left in the lurch

the dogs trust are running a scheme for fostering to allow dogs to be returned to their owners instead of putting them through the whole rescue process, but it's specifically for women in prison ;), but it shows that they are already examining the number of dogs who don't really need a new home, just a bridging space for a while :)

make sure there is a hard and fast agreement over such things as vet bills, and if the dog is insured, make sure there are no problems wrt any arrangement made (and I'd tell the insurers that it's a 'friend' who's looking after the dog ;) )

Some good points there, Strix. I guess that, in taking a Support Dog, most of your points are covered because (my understanding is) the fosterer is deemed to be providing accommodation in the evening and weekends whilst the overall responsibility remains with the association. Quite a different picture to an informal arrangement. Thanks for focussing my view!

Ok will do, thanks Strix. Have to say, my personal take on dog fostering is about the same as grandparents' view on grandchildren - great to have, love 'em to bits, glad to hand them back to their parents! Just call me practical :)

Strix
01-02-2009, 00:48
well that's one reason we've been known to do it - we get to have a dog short term, and when we go on holiday or visiting we're back down to just the one, relatively easy to handle, houndlet

only thing is, there's a settling in period for each dog (unless you have a Jade type Rott :P ), so if you can handle that practically and smoothly, you've got it cracked

It's a long shot because I know that they have a waiting list, but try the RSPCA due to the urgency perhaps they might help, lots of others too that might help, try Rotherham dog rescue, pets@home on here and post on dogpages, lots of rescues will advertise the dog whilst she stays with you until a new owner comes up.

Good luck I hope that you find someone to take her.

I am really so sorry to hear of your situation, but (and I am truly sorry I have to say this) you have to look for a rescue place right now, it is almost too late today already, please don't wait around waiting for someone to offer to foster her because it probably will not happen.

Aww I feel ever so mean because I know how you must be feeling, but you have to find a place for this dog today...today is almost gone now!

They may not have got it lubylou I have noticed before that there is sometimes a lag in people going offline and it showing as such, they will see the pm when they next come on, are you going to try fostering the dog for them? I do hope so, I would love to see a happy ending here against all the odds.

Have they rang round the rescue's etc? Really they ought to have been doing this ages ago seen as there are long waiting lists and with the current state of rescue dogs, just as backup plan incase a fosterer couldn't be found. So if the dog can't stay beyond tonight, what's going to happen now then?

I don't know if I'm the person you're talking about but suspect I might be as I've had a couple of PMs from people on here - but they arrived this afternoon, and I've been at work all day and just logged on now. Ahah. Just realised, I logged on very briefly from work to see what was happening tonight with the snow then shut down the Forum and went back to work.

Anyway. I've only just got the messages. I'm a bit confused about the timing of all this - you say you've just moved into a new flat, but expect to be in a new flat in three months? Have you not just signed up for a six month assured shorthold tenancy? How can you be sure that you'll definitely be able to find a landlord who will accept your dog?

I'm really sorry, I love animals and can imagine how desperate you're feeling. But, I work full time and although my teenager is full of good intentions to look after a dog I am realistic enough to know that I'll be the one stuck with it in practice.

Cheeky if you still have her tomorrow, i can come and take her, but and please don't think i'm being funny here, it would have to be full time.
We have a son who is autistic and he wouldn't handle the dog leaving again once he had bonded with her.
The offer is there if you can't get sorted.

offering to pay a larger deposit to cover any damaged doors (which won't happen if you crate train the dog), and assure the landlord you'll either clean all carpets or pay for their cleaning before leaving goes a long way to swaying anybody who's just a bit iffy about the idea

It must be a very difficult time for you all and its great that you were able to see clearly at that time and do whats best for Molly, even though that meant hurt for you, sometimes that is what pet ownership is all about, you must feel very sad but you made sure that she is happy and safe good on you both cheeky99 xx

I hope that Molly soon settles and has a wonderful life in her new home :)
