I'm not going to indulge in naming and shaming here, but have you all been reading about the back-from-the dead knitter? Very long story made short:

- Popular-ish (not a 'big' name, but I have several of her patterns queued) knitting designer (some lovely patterns, by the way) 'dies' in early 2008. She leaves behind a mess of disgruntled knitters who were, allegedly owed money/yarn, and lots of understandably upset and sad folk who set up memorial knit-alongs, groups and such like. Some of her patterns continue to be sold for 'charity'.

- Rumblings of discontent in the background that all is not as it seems.

- New knitter/designer appears who bears a spooky resemblance to the deceased.

- Folk get more curious, search various records, amass evidence of an apparent scam.

- Various sock puppet Ravelry/Flickr/Etsy/YouTube accounts are rapidly amended or deleted.

- Poo hits the fan.

It's all very entertaining. Not entirely sure whether she's a shameless con artist or an attention-seeking narcissist with serious issues. Probably a bit of both.

Details to be found on the Lazy, Stupid and Godless group on Ravelry, and on the Knitty boards.

I'm going to go and have a nosey on the knitting gossip now - what an odd thing to do though.

There's 140 pages in (what appears to be) the relevant thread. I got as far as page 10 and gave up!!!

But as I lurve a good conspiracy theory....I may try again later!

Cheers, Carrie

Are you on the Knitty forums? The thread there is shorter and with less banter.

Well, I had a quick shufty but couldn't be bothered with wading through it all and really wanted it made simple. All that beating about the bush goes over my head. But the gist of it is??????? somebody on ravelry pretended to die and got found out and something to do with socks (which will always confuse me).
Why did she pretend to die? not sure but there are times when I have been knitting socks I have often thought I would die before I finished a pair. So from that angle I can sympathise with her. Is there something I am missing, am I close?

...Why did she pretend to die?...
She allegedly failed to send out orders and ended up owing folk money/products. Beyond that, who knows? She's a con artist? She's an attention-seeking narcissist?
