View Full Version : Handsworth roundabout with Parkway
Coming off the slip road onto Handsworth I see that the Highways dept have marked the road up to allow two lines of traffic to go right. How about a sign above the road it can't be seen when theres a queue. Then as you go up pass Asda we might stop the traffic coming to a stand still or cutting up from the right hand lane.
UnkleBob 17-06-2005, 20:35 i live near the asda roundabout, and it's a 'mare at times. I think it needs traffic lights, or as you suggest, some sort of filtering. Turning right in the left hand lane is a no-no for me, just ain't right is it?

To be honest, if you're going straight up Handsworth Road, its a lot easier than using the right hand lane and then having to get back over under the bridge.
youwhatref 18-06-2005, 09:12 They shoud do it anyway as the majority of buses tend to use the left hand bus lane to round the roundabout. I think this is because the left hand lane on Handsworth Rd is always full and therefore it saves them cutting in
mega_monty 26-06-2005, 00:54 Personally I dont think the ASDA should never have been built on that site in the first place, that particular junction with the parkway was already very busy long before ASDA took up residence.
As the first exit is 'left' and the second exit only gets you back to where you've come from, the exit for Handsworth is technically the second exit - and is therefore a legitimate 'straight on'. There are 2 lanes entering the roundabout and 2 lanes exiting, and I for one much prefer the new arrangement to the old (where locals used it this way without the markings ;) )
It could do with a lane marker board though, as could many of sheffield's dual carriageways, junctions and roundabouts - but that would be a whole new thread ;)

Don't need a new thread that's the idea.

And you call yourself a driving instructor? I understand what he means!
*Twinkle* 26-06-2005, 09:34 Lol I'm confused!
I don't like the roundabout. You have to get in the right lane to go straight ahead to darnall, if you're coming from Asda.... Then you have to swing into the left to take the Darnall exit, or you'll end up on the parkway. Yikes its scary and you can't see hardly anything either.
alchresearch 26-06-2005, 10:05 There is a very worrying issue here. With the incresae in congestion I have noticed a lot more people using the left hand lane to go all the way around the roundabout because of the volume of traffic in the right hand lane.
This happened at J32 of the M1 yesterday. I came off the southbound M1 and went into the right hand lane to get onto the Parkway. This idiotic woman in a purple Astra stayed in the left lane and did the same, forcing all the people in the correct lane to cancel their manoevure of moving across.
I vote for compulsory testing every five years!

Oi!! She
I also understood what was meant but going 270 degrees around a roundabout for the THIRD exit is still a right turn. The fact that the second exit takes you back up onto the Parkway is irrelevant - the exit for Handsworth when coming from town is still the third exit and should be signalled as such. If you don't believe me, try taking your driving test again at Handsworth, don't signal and then see what the examiner says!
Having said that, I agree with Strix that the new arrangement is better and as was said, it formalises what locals havebeen doing for years.
See? This formality of instruction on roundabouts is the biggest problem with driving.
All the rules are laid down in black and white, drummed into us for months, 'til we can do quartered roundabouts in our sleep - then one turns up that requires some thought (five/six exits or one like Handsworth) and people freak out and become dangerous coz this isn't what they're used to.
It's the Catcliffe one that leaves me flabbergasted.
Coming from Big W, left lane for P'way, right lane for airport, no right turn coz it's the slip road off the parkway (so no entry). Fine. That works. Not painted on the road, but everybody uses common sense.
Coming from the airport, there is still a 'no entry' at the third exit, but everybody uses the left lane. And god help anybody who tries to go straight on from the right hand lane. I wouldn't mind, but around 2 thirds of the traffic is going left
It's the same heffing junction!!!!!! I must be the same people using it!!! What's going on???? :loopy:
Bloomdido 26-06-2005, 20:45 Why can't there be a sliproad from the Parkway? I live on Hall Road and hours of my life are being wasted queueing to get round the roundabout and onto Handsworth Road. It's going to get even worse as 300 new homes are being built at the back of Halesworth Road with no additional service roads or link from Catcliffe, so even more congestion is coming.

There are plans for a link road from Catcliffe, Waverly direct to Retford/Sheffield road.
This will not help with congestion going to or from Handsworth but will help take traffic off the road by the Old Asda Site that is normally grid locked at peak times.(Traffic Lights could help there)
How Asda obtained the planning for it's store at Handsworth is mind boggling.
The number of traffic lights that have been erected is causing more congestion than it ever was before Asda was built there.
The bus stops are placed less than 100 meters away from each other and as you get past one traffic light and bus stop....there is another one!
The easiest way to get onto Handsworth Road from the Parkway is to get off at Catcliffe and go from Morrisons to orgreave.

You can't turn right on to Retford Rd though if you come off Rotherham Rd. You need to turn right and go up Orgreave Lane to rejoin Retford Rd :)
I agree re all the bus stops. They are far too close together along Handsworth Rd and Retford Rd.

I know. I didn't want to ramble ;)
jessycar 27-06-2005, 18:10 Of course ;)
You do see people trying to turn right though at that junction though.
Some div tried to climb up my inside once becasue they'd decided I must be turning right :loopy:
Pulling right, then positioning yourself pointing left gives better traction when trying to leap out infront of the oncoming rush hour traffic (which never lets you out there)
