View Full Version : Can anyone help me locate a photograph of my mother, please?
Plain Talker 17-06-2005, 17:42 There is a photograph in existence of my mother as a child, which i am desperately trying to trace. I would be grateful if anyone could help me.
I know there's a wealth of knowledge, and access to different sites and archives between us, here on the sheffield forum, and I am pretty certain there must be someone on here who could help me locate it..
I have looked on picturesheffield, (before anyone asks! lol) but it is not on there.
The photograph is entitled "flooding at 'X@ street, carbrook (or attercliffe/ brightside)"(or something very similar)
The photo was taken in the late 1940's, it's a shot of some old terraced houses.
In the picture, there's a woman, standing to the right of the pic, dresses in typical war/ late 40's clothes (probably a wrap round "pinny", watching two small children, playing, in the street.
The street runs across, away to the right, it's an old cobbled street, with the remnants of a flood on the road.
One of those kiddies is my late mother. I have tried allsorts to find this picture. I am constantly scanning books with pictures of old sheffield in, to see if, by chance, the pic is in there.
It would really mean a lot to me to be able to locate that picture, and maybe even get copies for myself and my aunts. (who are also longing to have a copy of said pic)
thank you in advance
PT

Do you mean that you've been unable to find it ?
It's worth asking the Local Studies staff to have a look too, - and they might even be able to suggest other likely publications to look in.
Plain Talker 18-06-2005, 01:55 many thanks, greybeard.
I may try the ls library this coming week. (even with the access probs at central library)
as far as i remember, it was not one of the pics on picturesheffield, it was somewhere else i found it, and i cannot for the life of me, find where i originally saw it.

PT if all the searches fail have you considered hypnosis to see if the place you saw the picture can be brought back to your memory, just a thought.........
RiffRaff 18-06-2005, 12:41 You've probably thought of this, Plain Talker, but there was an "Old Heeley" book brought out 3-4 years ago by the local history group.
Obviously, lots of photo's in it.....
PT, there are a whole series of books with pictures of different areas of sheffield from days gone by. I can't remember who publishes them but they are A5 sized and WH Smiths in town and at Meadowhall stock them. Have you looked in the Attercliffe/Carbrook version of those books?
Plain Talker 19-06-2005, 14:38 Thank you everyone, for your suggestions.
I knew i could rely on the forummers to come up trumps, with suggestions/ pointers etc, if not the actual source of the original photo.
I intend to follow these leads up, that have been given.
Gratitudes, gratitudes! lol

Ousetunes 23-06-2005, 13:59 Sorry if this sounds a silly question PT, but where did you originally see the picture? And how long ago?
You also don't state which street it says on the piccie. Is this because you can't remember it, or simply because you'd sooner not state it (for whatever reason)?
I'd love to be able to help.
Plain Talker 23-06-2005, 16:32 thanks, ousetunes.
i saw this pic about six months ago. I am convinced it was on the net, possibly as part of publicity for a book. but i could be wrong.
i can't remember the nam eof the street, unfortunately, that's why i don't name it. all i remember of the title of the pic was words to the effect of "Children playing in XX____ sStreet, (BRightside/Carbrook/ Atterclife?) after flooding.
it was only after, that the bells started ringing. and by then i had lost the pic.
I appreciate your help, ousetunes, you are very kind. ty.

Hi PT. I've been having a think where you might have seen the picture. Do you ever look at local postcards on Ebay? I remember a few months ago seeing one or two of floods in Sheffield. Any chance the picture you're looking for was one of them, in which case there's a good chance Local Studies Library might have a copy.
It is just possible that the picture is still in your internet explorer file cache. The older entries here get overwritten by recent entries when it reaches its defined size but it might be worth a look.
This is usually in a folder called "Temporary Internet Files" which might be in Documents and Settings \ <windows user name> \ local settings.
Find this folder in windows explorer. One of the columns is "last accessed". Click on this heading to get the files in this order. See if there are any entries old enough to possibly include your photograph.
I would expect your picture to have a file type of .jpg ( or less likely to be .gif). If you open these files you can see what is in them. The internet address column will tell you the web site.

Could this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/wharncliffe/27june004.jpg) be by any chance what you are looking for. Sorry for the terrible quality. The original photo was taken in August 1954, Surbiton Street, Carbrook.
Heres hoping.
Edit.
Tried to clean the image up, not much better I Know but a little clearer:

Is it worth having a rifle through the rest of the files on your PC PT? I couldn't find something again recently, and couldn't remember when I'd stumbled across it, but trawling through my college PC files jogged my memory as to what I was searching for and when that was. I was then able to use 'history' to pin it down
