View Full Version : Nick Montgomery
2tjohnston 29-01-2009, 08:48 Nick Montgomery is the worst player to put a united shirt on in the last few seasons, there has to be someone out there? Howard should be starting week in and week out tuesday night Montgomery was awful, then again so was all the midfield, so why does Blackwell keep on playing him? :loopy:

Because apart from Tuesday night, he's been playing quite well the last few games.
Almost everyone had a stinker on Tuesday, so you can't just single him out.
Have you been to many games this season?
2tjohnston 29-01-2009, 08:59 Playing quite well??????? :hihi:
where do you start i dont dissagree there is not a player in the utd side that is proud to be a blade .he does a amazing amount of work but with not much end result.now the bad points to be a midfielder (which at the moment we dont seem to have got one)you have to tackle pass and chip in with a goal now and again i am afraid monty carnt really do any imo .when i watch him one thing that springs to mind is a head less chicken as he runs all over snapping at peoples feet and thats all.for a midfielder that carnt pass carnt shoot carnt score ,this surely is not good enough imo:loopy::loopy:
Im afraid he isn't good enough- simple as that!! Running for 90 minutes does not make him a good footballer.
I have always been behind him and wanted him to do well but when you have hendrie and howard on the subs bench then its time for a change!

But Howard doesn't really do what we got him for. He was supposed to be the awesome playmaker who was the link to the strikers, supplying them with killer passes etc. Has he done that yet this season? Nope. He's a liability at times as he likes the odd reckless challenge and, at this moment, we need to be keeping our heads in times of pressure, not trying to cripple opposing players. I have faith that he'll come good, but he needs a bit of reining in at times.
You're right, Monty isn't really a footballer, but he is useful when you need your midfield holding and opposing players chasing down. He's got a decent motor on him and can go for 90mins. And despite what has been said on this thread so far, from what I've seen, he's had some decent games where he's passed the ball well and actually been effective in that role.
Yes, of course I'd like somebody like Ronaldo in midfield, but until we can afford players like that, I don't think some Blades fans will ever be happy with who we have in the middle.
Beattie, I thought, was pretty non-existent in the majority of games this season and I for one wasn't that bothered that he went. Yet to some, he was the be all and the doom-mongers were out in force when he left. That first half against Norwich was the best we've played this season, in my humble opinion, as it showed that as long as we work as a team, we can play some very good football and don't need a 'target man'.
I just wish some fans could be a tad more positive sometimes. Yes, we're not playing the most attractive football, and we're not battering teams, but we're in a play-off place, got the 3rd best goal-difference in the league, are getting attendances that would make a few Prem teams blush and, in the grand scheme of things, aren't really that far away from the top few teams.

But do you honestly think that monty is good enough for our team? I agree with some of your points and until we change the style of our play then howard isn't going to flourish at bramall lane, i think he needs a player like he had at the dingles- campell rice to get the best out of him!
monty is good at man marking but as soon as you have a midfield that passes lots and moves quickly then he is totally out of his depth!!! and im sorry but the old "he can run for 90 minutes" excuse is not good enough now- these are professional players playing 90 or 180minutes of matches a week and getting paid thousands of pounds for doing it- if they can;t run for 90 minutes they need to get another job!! or take a pay cut!
Not having a go at you pal- i just think we have better options than him at the minute.

Don;t you think this is like the liverpool situation- they were top but not playing too well- yet a few weeks later they find themselves a few places down the league because they start getting stupid results- i just hope that united doesn't get like that because i think our league position is really masking the problems we have at the minute.
In the grand scheme of things we arn't that far behind the top 3 teams but on the pitch they are in a different league at the minute!!!
Grandad.Malky 29-01-2009, 11:31 Will he still be here next season?

I don't think they will renew his deal- same goes for webber. they wil jsut let there delas run there course and use the wages to sign others.
Robbie Loving 29-01-2009, 14:12 I've gone over the Monty debate on a few forums now.
I ma happy with him being in the side, he does what is required of him and we know he is no world beater. He will run all day and break up play, then his job is to lay it off to one of better players..... however it is hard for him to do this when the other players are hiding from him.

Good point, all too often it looks like the ball is a hot potato, nobody wants it do they
SteveBlade 29-01-2009, 14:48 Hes ****e, he gives 100% every game but thats the only thing positive you can say about him...... Just not good enough.
2tjohnston 29-01-2009, 15:00 Well said
He aint s@@te, how can you say that he has been getting in the team for the last 8 years to my knowledge he is paid to do a job he gets in the team for every game under 3 or 4 different mangagers, they must see what I see he breaks up play he can pass the ball to another Blade as long as he is no longer than 5 yards away, that is what he gets paid to do and he does it very effectively.
Answer me this who would you play there who would get stuck in and break up the play don't say Sun as he would be sent off within 5 minutes, as for Tuesday Monty along with Morgan and Killa was my man of the match.

Well if you think he was MOM on tuesday then you must be crazy or have been watching a different game to the rest of the crowd.

I agree, I thought Morgs was solid as per usual. The problem with Monty is he's a 'holding' or defensive midfielder. We need a playmaker to balance that, but all too often Howard is challenging and chasing balls when he should be leaving that job to Monty and distributing killer passes to the forwards. Unfortunately, this isn't happening at the moment.
Monty does what hes good at breaking up the opposition and giving the side some back bone,he is defo not the worse player at the lane, that has to go to Halford he is absolutley s**t.He cant pass a ball to save his life, the only thing he is good at is throwing the ball, god knows what blackwell sees in him?

man of match what game was u watching? worst player on pitch he is s***
As I have probaly seen every game that Monty has ever played in over the years I can definately think of worse players than him I give you Bobby Ford, you all slag him but who do we have at the club that can do his job as effectively name them, then we can drop him and move him on.

Monty doesnt no the 1st thing about the passing game but neither does Blackwell, they are made for each other, dont go up this season crowds will half watchin this longball s***e!!
Stockers 30-01-2009, 08:40 Come off it, everyone knows what Montys game is, he breaks up play and passes it to someone who can make use of the ball.
I think singling him out on Tuesday is harsh, Sharp (who i've supported for the last season and a half) and Quinn were both AWFUL, i mean truly shocking!!!
We need a Monty type player to do the dirty work, Howard has been an awful signing up to now and has done nothing to justify a place in the team.
Lay off Monty, let him do what he does (very effectively might i add), we've looked a much better team unit since Monty has come back. With Quinn, Howard, Cotterill and Webber in midfield you haven't got a tackle in there between them.

Bobby Ford?
Even his name was crap.

Who would you rather have starting Howard or Montgomery?
Stockers 30-01-2009, 09:12 Who would you rather have starting Howard or Montgomery?
Monty every day of the week.
Howard gives us nothing.
I'll top Bobby Ford with Ian Hamilton and Jonathan Hunt!!!
2tjohnston 30-01-2009, 10:15 :loopy: can monty pass? NO, can monty shoot? NO, can monty create? NO
is monty a footballer? NO

Its all about the balance of the team, for your Woodwards and Curries you always need a Trevor Hockey and Monty is our Trevor Hockey. You need someone to do the dirty work.
Monty individually isn't the greatest but he offers a hell of a lot to a team unit, he hassles the opposition, breaks up play and helps the defence, its up to the likes of Quinn and Webber to do the attacking and creating.
If Monty could pass, shoot and create endless chances he'd be England captain and playing for Man U.

Neither can Halford and you dont slag him off do you?
And no one slags off Billy Blunt and he is absolutely bloody awful biggest waste of £2million quid this club ever spent.
Stockers Ill give you Hunt but not Chico, maybe top the lot with John Ebbrill (I saw his 45 minutes)

No I still say Horsfield has been our biggest waste of money in recent years.
Considering he barely kicked a ball for us under 3 different managers.
Over 1 million on quid on him (plus whatever stupid wage he was on).
Robbie Loving 30-01-2009, 14:08 He does everything other than do that.
It's not his fault that when he gets the ball for us everyone hides from him like they don't wanna have the ball.
