PRINCE Andrew is to give a boost to centenary celebrations at the University of Sheffield with a visit to the campus next Wednesday.

The prince is in the city in his role as a UK Special Representative for International Trade, and will be looking at some of the latest investment developments which are ready for overseas markets.
These will include software for sport, cutting edge DVD technology and a new system for securing industrial loads. At the university he will look at the work of SportsPulse, a collaboration between Hallam and Sheffield.
The consortium, which also includes business organisations and key regional sport-based companies, works on new products with manufacturer HD Sports Ltd.
The aim is to develop the sports industry sector in South Yorkshire as a way of stimulating economic growth and regeneration.
The Duke of York will view a number of exhibitions and will see, among other things, a demonstration of innovative lifestyle management software, and the laser scanning of a cyclist on a bike to generate accurate 3D digital models. The prince will be visiting the University of Sheffield's Department of Mechanical Engineering, and its Sports Engineering Research Group, which is also the current SportsPulse HQ.
He will see exhibitions and practical demonstrations showing how South Yorkshire is becoming internationally renowned for the high quality of its sports engineering and sport-related businesses.
Dr Steve Haake, director of SportsPulse, said: "We are thrilled to welcome the Duke of York to the University of Sheffield. I am sure he will be interested to know more about the way the city, the universities and local businesses are working together to develop a world-class and economically significant sports industry cluster."
Earlier the Prince will be at the Zoo Digital Group, an expanding technology and games publishing company.

Not sure about jollies, he probably finds these things incredibly dull :)

Have a gander at the Sports Engineering website (http://www.sportseng.org.uk) to see what they do at the uni here, some of it is actually interesting! (disclaimer - I worked there for a few years, so I would think that ;))

a new system for securing industrial loads = a bigger rope?

Hope there's no repeat of the shameful closing of roads/transport as for the G8 nobodies.

Ok I'm intrigued - what is this 'innovative lifestyle management software' ? Is it a diary or sommat ? :P

Oh no! not the bloody Royals in Sheffield again...more traffic disruption. Isn't it time they were privatised and left to finance themselves. I don't see how a visit from HRH Duke of York is going to help Sheffield.

This is not to detract from the fabulous work the university is doing in the cutting edge of world technology. Spot On!!

The Royal visit is a big yawn though.

Are there any republicans left out there?

Quite apppropriate that he's looking at sporting stuff, he spends most of his time, and plenty of our money playing golf doesn't he?

With you all the way AndyK, bring on the republic.

Surely these professional parasites have run their course.

Apart from disruption, just what is this freeloader going to do for Sheffield University and the area as a whole?

Bet the Duke of York is well tiddled off having to come to Sheffield with his 10,000 men on Weds.

The weather forecast is looking sunny - he'll be missing a great days golfing.

But a least the police force are well practised in their formation motorbike driving after last weeks activities.
