by Eunny Jang.. has anyone here ever knitted those? It'll be my first colourwork so I'm a bit anxious, but I'm already stuck on the cast on.. it says Italian tubular cast on and I've found a video for it so hopefully that'll help but it looks tricky!
I've had this pattern bookmarked for ages; it was the first one I queued in Ravelry, as I recall. I've played around with a couple of versions of the tubular cast on:
- this one (http://www.fluffbuff.com/2006/07/tubular_caston_without_the_was_1.html) from Fluffbuff, which has the cast on stitches formed from the ball end of the yarn. This is apparently the 'proper' Italian tubular cast on.
- this one (http://ysolda.com/wordpress/pictorial-guides/double-rib-tubular-cast-on/) from Ysolda, which has the cast on stitches formed from both the ball end and the tail end of the yarn. In this one, there's no removable strand.
The problem with the cast on is that it tends to flare out and look a little loose and messy.
Haven't actually got around to knitting the gloves, but I've knit up from both cast ons a couple of times just for practice. I found that for me, Ysolda's method was better for avoiding the flaring.
ETA: With Fluffbuff's method, I stuck the DPN I was casting on to into a wad of blue tack stuck to the desk. It's a bit fiddly otherwise.
