View Full Version : Well I never, a page about sheffield theflyingfish 17-06-2005, 13:44 here (http://www.tartcider.com/ptssheffield.htm) Shiesh 17-06-2005, 13:52 How awful...though I do agree with this bit ''Claims to be Britain's greenest city, and to have quadruple the number of trees as people. An obvious fabrication: there are fewer than one million trees on the British Isles.....Residents seem to suffer from a misguided sense of civic pride (e.g. "we have lots of trees!"), and would no doubt claim their city far superior to the many surrounding it. When I first came to Sheffield 8 years ago the amount of locals who said to me ' I bet you don't see this many trees in Middlesbrough??' was quite alarming!! :) slimsid2000 17-06-2005, 13:52 Very funny. I enjoyed this. theflyingfish 17-06-2005, 14:01 Originally posted by Shiesh How awful...though I do agree with this bit ''Claims to be Britain's greenest city, and to have quadruple the number of trees as people. When I first came to Sheffield 8 years ago the amount of locals who said to me ' I bet you don't see this many trees in Middlesbrough??' was quite alarming!! :) The number of people who have told me in the last 4 years that "Sheffield is the 4th biggest in England" I surprised that wasn't in there. nick2 17-06-2005, 14:04 There must be more than 1 million trees in the UK. They plant about 250,000 trees a year in London alone acording to the Guardian. http://politics.guardian.co.uk/otherparties/story/0,9061,1306430,00.html "There are 8m trees in the capital and while its councils know how many they are planting, no one has kept a record of those being lost. " triccivicci 17-06-2005, 14:14 i remember one of my old uni lecturers proudly claiming sheff was 4th biggeest city in eng...never saw it myself, sheff city is tiny, compared to all the other cities ive been too...leeds..manchester..birmingham...london.....e tc u get my point!!:heyhey: Damon 17-06-2005, 14:15 Not sure that verifiable numeric accuracy is the point of that (very funny) page... ;) triccivicci 17-06-2005, 14:17 :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: owdlad 17-06-2005, 14:18 Email him http://www.tartcider.com/selley.htm and flood his inbox with mail telling him how nice Sheffield really is. Unisol 17-06-2005, 14:27 It's easy to forget just how big Sheffield is actually. I drove from High Green to Totley this morning which took an hour in average traffic. A hour to cross a city does not make a small city. Sheffield's city centre is quite small compared to Leeds, Liverpool etc but the suburbs are quite sprawling. I always thought Sheffield was 3rd largest in area but 4th largest in population. Who cares anyhow? triccivicci 17-06-2005, 14:30 Who cares anyhow? exactly, u just need to look at the % of students who stay on after uni...myself included!sheff must be doing something right!:) metalman 17-06-2005, 14:38 Originally posted by Unisol I drove from High Green to Totley this morning which took an hour in average traffic. A hour to cross a city does not make a small city. An hour to cross a not very big city makes a not very big city with severe traffic dysfunction. Quite an amusing page. It does however highlight the comparative lack of 'unique' features in Sheffield that make a city. I'm sure if we do try something new, the anti-brigade will be out in force to keep Sheffield how it is. WallBuilder 17-06-2005, 15:36 Just had a look at the page and the thought came to mind 'some people really deserve the title of PRAT' soupy 17-06-2005, 16:00 well presented site some funny bits must have taken him/her a while to create it. I disagree 100% with it though Sheffield r0x :headbang: rubydazzler 17-06-2005, 16:06 Originally posted by Shiesh When I first came to Sheffield 8 years ago the amount of locals who said to me ' I bet you don't see this many trees in Middlesbrough??' was quite alarming!!:) well. did you? :P Swiller 17-06-2005, 16:37 Has this person actually visited Sheffield or just grabbed articles and pictures off of the internet? What about venues such as the Winter Gardens, Botanical Gardens, Ecci roads in summer (sorry not very P.C.) but you get my point! What a twonk!!!! Swiller (Sheffield born and bred) Shiesh 17-06-2005, 21:03 Originally posted by rubydazzler well. did you? :P Dunno - coz Middlesbrough is flat so you kinda don't see them all tiered up on the streets like you do in Sheffield! Hook 17-06-2005, 21:14 Originally posted by Shiesh Dunno - coz Middlesbrough is flat so you kinda don't see them all tiered up on the streets like you do in Sheffield! There's definately more trees in Yarm then there are in the whole of Sheffield. There's several hundred in my back garden alone (as I look out my window!) t020 17-06-2005, 22:48 A load of rubbish. 1 million trees in the British Isles?! I don't think so. I don't find the article at all amusing either. cgksheff 18-06-2005, 07:05 Originally posted by t020 A load of rubbish. 1 million trees in the British Isles?! I don't think so. "Over 2 million in Sheffield"!!! http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/parks-woodlands--countryside/trees--woodlands Norton 18-06-2005, 07:29 Apparently the only other two places that suck are Kingston in Ontario, Canada and The Middle East! http://www.tartcider.com/features.htm right at the bottom. Sure some places are bad in Sheffield but there are a load of places that are worse. 90% of his beloved London is a hell-hole and even in the tourist places, I've never seen so much muck on the buildings :) Don_Kiddick 18-06-2005, 09:29 :hihi: Whata avery funny page, thanks  I howled! Residents seem to suffer from a misguided sense of civic pride (e.g. "we have lots of trees!"), and would no doubt claim their city far superior to the many surrounding it. And don't they just :hihi: :hihi: :D miggy 18-06-2005, 12:00 Lol, that page is hysterical. Don't knock it :) BTW: If you don't know about trees in sheffield then you're in the wrong places, and the reason people don't realise it's size is because it doesn't have a very concentrated city centre - not very metropolitan. Which is why people like me like it. |
