View Full Version : Advice on my new shih tzu
blade4ever 28-01-2009, 15:42 We got a 3 month old shih tzu last week and he's absolutely gorgeous. We have named him gizmo and it's amazing how quickly he has settled in with us. I was just wanting some advice on 2 things. The first is any tips on paper training him, , he wee's on the paper i have put down, but when he wants a number 2, he tends to do it anywhere. I feed him at the same time everyday and when i see him squat down, i put him on the paper, but he walks off. I know he is still very young and will have accidents, but i want to get him doing it on paper as soon as possible.
the second thing i wanted to ask is can he go out for walks before he's had his injections or should i wait until he's had them? he's booked in for the first lot next week.
thanks in advance.
shihtzumad 28-01-2009, 15:55 Paper training takes a lot of patience, he is only a baby just keep putting him on the paper when he wakes up and has eaten, and every 20 minutes when he his awake he will get use to it, Puppy training pads are much easier to use then paper, the training pads give of a smell for the pup to return, they have been on offer at asda for 100 training pads for £5, right bargain,
Please do not take him out until he has completed his full course of injections

Thanks. I'll get some pads on friday when we go to the asda. I thought he shouldnt go out until he's had his injections, but i just wanted to check.
beansforyou 28-01-2009, 16:28 I have some of the pads, my pup just totally ignored them, and the spray I got to attract her, and the spray I got to put her off going in other places
We need photos!
cuddlycats 28-01-2009, 19:11 I got my cavie when she was 8 weeks and i completely skipped paper training as i read it could just make harder work for you. I let Pip out every half hour/hour, or if she was sniffing around and gave her treats and praise if she did anything. I put her in a pen if i had to go out.She didn't have any accidents in the house after 18 weeks :). She 17 months now.

It would be worth taking him out carrying him.
He can't go out for walks on the floor or come into contact with other dogs but you can take him out in your arms and socialise him to all different things.
Just make sure he finds everything you introduce him to really, really good! Try introducing him to children, men with beards, people wearing hats, using umbrella's and ask all of these people to feed him a little treat. :)
Congratulations on your pup!
blade4ever 28-01-2009, 19:54 Thanks very much. He's absolutely adorable. We haven't even had him a week yet, but it feels like he's been here forever. He's really good with my 2 children and my 2 cats, he just wants to play with them. thanks for your advice.
hodgepig66 29-01-2009, 16:22 every time he does a tiddle or poo give him praise for doing it where he should, affection or treats work wonders,if he has an accident just clean it up,don't have a go at him......with love or a few treats he'll soon get the message, now youv'e got him all the fun and joy begins
