i have a intel pentium 4, the agp on it is 1.5v. does anyone know if a radeon 9600 256 mb ddr should work in it?

i have tried it and it fits the socket but nothing comes on to the moniter.

if its not right could anyone recomend what would be a good graphics card for it (gaming)

thanks janny

A good rule of thumb is usually that if it fits the AGP socket, it ought to work! :) It's worth making absolutely sure it's seated properly and your cable is in right (sounds daft, but we've all been there!). It doesn't sound like a super-modern power-hungry card either.

Could just be faulty, do you or a friend have any other computers you could try it in?

Does it beep at all when it powers on? If I remember correctly, its an 8x AGP card, which ought to work in 4x slots and at a rough guess, yours will be 4x. Just check the card in another computer if you can, just to be sure.

This webpage says it will work with Intel Pentium 4 motherboard with AGP 4X (1.5V), 8X (0.8v) or Universal AGP 3.0 bus configuration (4X/8X).

ATI Radeon 9600 256mb DDR (http://store.jazztechnology.net/atira9625ddr.html)

thanks rich, yeah it works fine in another computer (the one i am on now) so no problem there.

there was a different amount of slits on the green tabs on the graphics card to the one what was already in, there is three sections on one and two on the other (if you know what i mean, im trying to make it as clear as possible..lol)

if you do know what i mean then would that be the problem do you think? if you know

thanks :)

Yes, I have noticed this on various video cards and motherboards.

I am aware of some AGP cards that will not fit into certain AGP slots as the notches are in the wrong place.

Do any on our more knowledgable forummers know if this is related to the voltage of the card or motherboard, to prevent you from damaging the video card or motherboard?

I always thought that if you could fit the card into the slot, then it should work...

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerated_Graphics_Port) has some info here. AGP 1x/2x, 4x and 8x all have different voltages (3.3V, 1.5V and 0.8V respectively), so this is why the slots are keyed. I've never noticed two cards which I know are the same version having different connections, but 1x and 2x have the same voltage so there may be some overlap here.
