View Full Version : It Looks Like A Fish To Me!
BoppinBruce 17-06-2005, 11:29 Maybe I am a lttle behind with my street cred but can anybody tell me what the motive of a fish shape is that people are sticking on their cars. There is a car on Crookes that has one in pink about 400 mm long. Its like a crossed over bit of ribbon. Any one help?
It's the sign of Christianity.
Yes was just about to say the same,I think this is what you are on about,?

Think it's a link to the Diciples being fishermen - loafs and fishes and all that.
In the times of the early Roman Christians, followers of Christ were often persecuted for their faith and any outward symbol of their belief could often get them imprisoned or killed. However, for their underground movement, the practitioners needed some means of identifying one another, and for safety they chose a symbol that was not directly associated with their faith. Thus the fish symbol was born.
For the symbol to be a success there had to be some recognisable links with the faith. The fish was said to symbolise the baptismal waters, the loaves and fishes that Jesus used to feed the five thousand, and Jesus's own declaration to the disciples to become 'fishers of men'. The Greek word for fish, ichthus, is an acrostic consisting of the initial letters of five more Greek words, which briefly but clearly described the character of Christ and His claim to the worship of believers: 'Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter' which translates as 'Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour'.
The symbol of the fish and the word ichthus gained a meaning of high significance for those early Christians, and is still recognized as a Christian symbol today. Chromed fishes can often be seen stuck onto the back of Christians' cars, and for some time a chalk fish-mark was used by homeless wanderers to mark the houses of people who could be depended on for charity or for food.
Apparently
Hey BoppinBruce I bet the guy who went after you with the steering lock didn't have a fish symbol on his car!!!
Phanerothyme 17-06-2005, 12:01 also, if you met someone, and drew a curve in the dirt, they could draw another one over the top, making a fish - like a secret handshake.
Now all sorts of variations are available for scientific fundamentalists

muddycoffee 17-06-2005, 12:08 The fish sign which is used by christians is called the Vesica Pisces. In that form it represents the Era of planet earth's progress through the pisces age, which also corresponded with the christian age.
It is very likely that the drawing a fish for a secret sign of secret christian brotherhood, as quoted above, was made up by the Knights templar in the centuries after the formation of the catholic church to increase symbolism, as they were acutely aware of progression, and wanted to tie in symbolism to the bible and christianity in a big way.
The fish is also thought to have been a secret representation of a pyramid, there is a geometric reason for this, and the Knights Templar and later the Freemasons, liked to include that symbol because they saw the great Khufu pyramid in Giza as the most important symbol on earth. Which is why it is printed on dollar bills to this day. With the "all seeing eye" on top where the original tip is mising.

That is exactly the kind of made up claptrap which they teach at sunday school. Along with don't put an X instead of christ for chrismas, because it is non christians trying to take the christ out.
This is also wrong, the reason why X has always been used to signify christ is because it is the first greek letter in the word for christ, and the bible was originally written in greek.
