View Full Version : What Would You Do If This Happened To You?
BoppinBruce 17-06-2005, 10:09 Yesterday, Thursday, I was driving down Western Road, Crookes. A person in a car parked at the side of the raod decided to pull out causing me to stop sharply. This also caused shopping on the front seat to be thrown to the footwell, breaking some items.
I must admit, I wound my window down and shouted some choice words. I am a London Boy and think I know how to handle myself.
The youth, of about 19/20 then proceded to follow me in his car and when I met a road junction and was forced to stop got out of his car. I got out of mine expecting a 'slanging' match but no, he came at me with a steering wheel lock, aiming it at my head.
Needless to say I got back in my car and drove off at some pace.
The problem is, there were no witnesses and it is a road I use regularly both driving and walking as I live close by.
Should I just ignore the fact it happened? I dont want to change my routine and find alternative routes but I must admit I have reservations of walking on Western Road now.
i would carry on as normal, you cannot let these thugs change your life-that would let them win, did you get his reg?
Probably would have done what you did.
I agree with scott, you get his reg?
" That is off the hook "
Just carry on as normal. don't think about it. If you see him again, be ready though with some weaponary... (a mobile phone to call the police!)
BoppinBruce 17-06-2005, 10:17 I have his reg, and know about which house he resides in, with in half dozen or so, based on where his car was parked.
when i just passed my test i accidently cut up a lady at the lights as was confused by the road markings , i looked at her and mouthed "i am sorry" to her . she then proceeded to undercut me, pull in front and slam her brakes on. she then followed me everywhere i went. as i was 5 months pregnant at the time i was a bit scared of what she was going to do. eventually i lost her though and everything was fine. there are some nutters out there!:loopy:

You should report it to the police. This man wanted and had every intention of causing you serious harm. He could have killed you if he'd have hit you in the right spot. (Those steering locks are damn heavy) The fact that you scarpered may cause the police to be dis-interested, but the fact still remains that if you hadn't sped off, you might not be here to tell us the tale. Get onto the cops, I would.

You never know, there's always the possibility he's done somthing similar before, too.
He's probably satisfied that his little display of aggression succeeded in scaring the cr*p out of you and has forgotten about you now. Though I'd keep my mobile handy if walking about alone, just in case.
MuteWitness 17-06-2005, 10:33 Though I'd keep my mobile handy if walking about alone
but i bet you only walk alone to go to the park to play baseball - so you can walk around with a baseball bat!
BoppinBruce 17-06-2005, 10:33 I take your point Caprice. What I am concerned about is that, as there were no witnesses, if the police called he could deny it, then have a go at me sometime in future.
As he swung the steering wheel lock, it was one off those long ones, I felt the wind as it passed, it was that close. He meant business. Wouldn't you scarper?
For your own safety I would leave it. No point telling the police because as you say there were no witnesses and it will probably make the suituation worse.
It is annoying that he should get away with this behaviour but to be honest I think your life is more important because if he over-reacts as much as that there is no telling what he may do.
What goes around comes around and I am sure one day he will get what he deserves.
I have learnt myself not to swear or give the finger at other drivers since I got chased down the M25 by a complete nutter who tried to force me off the road and I had my young son with me at the time the only reason he stopped was because I pretended to call the police on my mobile looking at his reg as though I was telling them.
For your own safety sometimes it is better to bite your lip, keep your hands on the wheel because you never know who is another Kenny Noye!!!

Okay, lets just stop right here, you say there were no witnesses? You're sure about that?
Okay, what would i do if someone was trying to maim me..... hmmmm...... i'd probably get in my car as you did but instead of driving off run the swine over :hihi: and reverse back again, at least he wouldn't be doing that to anyone else. (As if)
spyro2000 17-06-2005, 12:09 I would have followed up his swing at me with a swing at him with my baseball bat. It would be self defense.
if he didnt chase after you he was bluffing,if he wasnt afraid of you he would not have needed the weapon, carry on regardless, sod him
Skatiechik 17-06-2005, 12:37 Report it to the police if you have his registration.
investigator 17-06-2005, 12:47 I'd definitely report it to the Police and leave it to them to decide what to do. I wouldn't be happy with myself if I didn't report it and then found out the t*** had done something similar again hurting someone (or worse).
muddycoffee 17-06-2005, 12:54 Things like this happen from time to time, I would just put it down to experience and a few broken eggs in the shopping or whatever. Someone who follows you and then goes for you with a weapon, ok in the form of a steering lock, has obviously got anger management problem, but could also be affected by drugs.
You don't want to loose an eye, or even get a huge dent in your car, it's not worth it.
A mate of mine once got coshed on the side of the head next to the cossack, in the daytime, his ear was split into two, and he had to have a load of stitches. It's just not worth it.
Another one I know about, is of a bloke who interveined in a pub fight where a bloke was beating up a woman, he new neither party and wasn't drunk and someone behind him, who was with one of the fighting parties, hit him on the back of the head with a bottle and he collapsed, when his head hit the kerb he lost his eyesight permanently.
WallBuilder 17-06-2005, 13:17 I'd be in the police station giving details as fast as possible, I'd want it on record that there is a nutter on the loose and I wouldn't want the police to do anything that pointed the finger at myself
I wouldnt change a thing you do dont alter the routes you drive I bet if he saw you again he wouldnt even remember.
Wait a few weeks then get four small blocks of wood hammer a number of tiny nails through the said block of wood place the wood under his tyres so he cant see them and hey presto revenge.
not that I have done this you understand :heyhey:
its all about the fruit in the exhast pipe
Oh, the wonders of road rage.....
Poor judgement while driving does happen and insulting the other driver is never a good idea. If you are cut off, it is best to stay calm and let it pass. I am sure he did not intentionally try to get into an accident with you.
You really ticked this guy off and really left yourself open to retribution. It is not uncommon for people to do stupid things in the heat of the moment and then later regret their actions. Unless he is some kind of psycho, he should not pose any real threat.
Leave it alone!
AJ sheffield 17-06-2005, 17:12 Up here on this estate you have to deal with this sort of business yourself or forget about it. In my experience, reporting to the police would undoubtedly end in
A : A revenge beating for you
B : A revenge attack on your car
C : A revenge attack on your house windows
or all or any combination of the above.
I tend to deal with people like these myself, either there and then and get it over with, or at a later date.
For this sort of incident I would have weighed up the odds, if I knew of him and who he had as back up I would act accordingly. No good getting into a fight with someone who has masses of backup or his a known hitter, better to leg it and strike back at a later date. Remember if it comes to using a steering wheel lock for such a small thing then he is obviously a nutcase so any physical confrontation would have to be dealt with using as much ferocity as you can muster. The very fact he was willing to use a weapon has you back heeling from the get go.
Seeing as you are unhurt and only your pride has been bruised I suggest you either forget about the incident (I know thats hard to do) or wait about a month and then get payback. Theres a million ways to this, I wont go into them on this thread.
Yes, I agree that he might have forgotten about you and the event. But dont take risk! It's related to you life. So if I were you, I would report it to police. You dont need to raise a charge against him but it's good to keep a record. Maybe he has also threatened other drivers before. Your report will then catch police attention to Western Road.
Furthermore, you also have his reg, and know about where he is living. Do talk to police and see what they say. If necessary, they can use your provided information to find witness / evidence.
Last but not the least, please be alert when you walk home alone. If unfortunately you do meet him again, stay calm and leave the place as quickly as you can.
Take care.
LordChaverly 17-06-2005, 19:32 My advice would be to forget about it and write it off as experience. The problem these days is that you don't know whether a driver you have an altercation with is at heart reasonable and civilised or Kenny Noye. In these situations, its best to bite your lip, drive off and forget about it.
steevie/d 17-06-2005, 20:08 hi there bruce
you must report this appauling behaviour to the cops he will think he will get away with this sort of thing for ever as no 1 reports him next time he may kill some 1 so ring the police they log EVRY CALL so they can use the deatails you supply them with for future referance and put a stop top to this scumbag:thumbsup:
Don_Kiddick 18-06-2005, 11:56 should have driven over the moron a few times & parked on his windpipe.
See how hard he'd be then.
Sorry this post carries no practical advice ....
the obvious thing to do would be to report it. Although there are no witnesses this time and nothing may happen but if he does it again it'll be on record.
However, is it really worth the risk of reprisals? There seem to be a fair few out of place people who live on Western Rd. You get a few dealers and some very unpleasnat people along with the students.
If you didn't live round there I'd say report it but as you do I'd just forget it.
and I used to live with a lad at uni who got hit over the head with a security lock and he still has the scars.
