View Full Version : What is the best way to freeze fresh herbs? BTB40 27-01-2009, 18:47 I buy fresh herbs then usually end up chucking the rest in the bin then I have to buy them all over again. Strix 27-01-2009, 19:37 have you tried growing some? I've read somewhere that chopping herbs and freezing them into an icecube is one method you can use if you've been chucking them in the bin, you've got nothing to lose by putting them in a plastic bag in the freezer and seeing how they turn out ;) drying is another method - hang them upside down somewhere dry and warm BTB40 27-01-2009, 21:32 Hi Strix Thanks for your reply I have put them in freezer in plastic bag and they've ended up all black and soggy. I haven't tried growing my own...yet, I really should think about it though. Surely it can't be that difficult? Strix 27-01-2009, 21:35 oh it's dead easy! - you don't have to start them from seeds either - buy plants  I've had herbs on the kitchen window ledge, as well as cut-and-come lettuce, which saves more throwing-out too ;) neeeeeeeeeek 27-01-2009, 21:45 Chop them up, stick them in ice cube trays then top up with water and freeze. When you want some just pop out an ice cube and drop it in whatever it is your cooking. Not much help when you want to sprinkle them on stuff, for that you can always melt the cube and shake dry but I think it works best if you add the icecube to things. :) taxman 27-01-2009, 22:41 I just stick them in the freezer in the packets they come in mort 28-01-2009, 10:10 don't chop them up before you freeze them and if you've washed them make sure they're completely dry, pull off any stalks and then put them in a bag in the freezer. To use them all you have to do is scrunch the bag and they'll break into little bits. I do this with parsley, mint, coriander and thyme and it seems to work just fine. vikj 29-01-2009, 15:10 Freezer section of Waitrose, loads of 'em! komal 11-02-2009, 20:39 i throw them straight in the freezer whole |
