View Full Version : Yellow Wristbands - what are they for?
goldenfleece 17-06-2005, 07:29 Maybe I am stupid or something but what is it with men wearing yellow wristbands all over the place? Keep seeing them adorning wrists, rubber yellow bands......am I missing out on some great symbolic icon here? What is it all about. Girls dont seem to wear them , but men do, noticed it a lot lately all over the place, but mainly on places like Ecclesall Road, Broomhill. SOmeone enlighten me.....are they identity bands for entry to nightclubs or something?
The wrist bands are in support of cancer charities, made famous by 5 times tour de france winner, Lance Armstrong. All monies paid for one is donated to cancer research, unless you buy one off ebay.

or anywhere down the Moor.
goldenfleece 17-06-2005, 07:36 I see. Ah, a good cause. I was thinking it was some bizarre socio-cultural ritual or a great iconic symbol of personal sexuality or something. I must stop thinking so deeply.......perhaps a night on West Street will help diminish my brain...
There are also numerous other colour's available now that are associated with charities, however there was a report in one of the sunday tabloids which gave a full run down of their cause and money raised so far.
The yellow wristband was the original, and if i remember correctly it has raised around £33 million worldwide since its release.
How about producing a Sheffield forum wristband, to raise awareness and help with running costs and our donation to charity. Over to you geoff.
Hi,
I agther that some groups of teenagers are using the wristbands to indicate sexual availability as well. Sort of similar to the old thing of declaring aspects of your sexuality through carrying handkerchiefs in certain pockets and in certain colours, I guess.
With regard to an SF wristband, I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather folks just stuck their hands in their pockets and gave without the middle men.
If you want to give to SF, have a chat with Geoff. And there are a range of charities who have members and interested parties here on SF who'll be more than willing to take cash!
:)

They have become a fashion accessory since certain high-profile footballers were spotted wearing them.

Exactly.
Why do people feel the need to advertise that they've made a donation to charity??? It's only a quid or something isn't it? Not much to be showing off about... cheesey ****ers!

I wear my Livestrong band cos it was given to me by a mate who is now no longer with us - am I therefore a GAYLORD, SCUM or both?
Just like gambling, these wristbands are a tax on stupidity. There are far more effective ways of giving to charity.

I think its a rather good idea, but its got a little out of hand, with every Tom Dick and Harry selling them its detracted from the cause, and there seems to be a wristband for everything from bulling to the national cheese curdlers association of outer mongolia. Its become less charitable, and more about fashion. There are endless market stalls selling these for 3 for a quid. So if you buy one from these paople, your not actually helping anyone, which defeats the point of them.

there was a sale in sheffield the other day selling sheaf valley baths memrobilia all the kids bought the white, red, green and blue but they didn't want the yellow ones hence they were all snapped up the passing students that live in the places mentioned above, they couldn't afford the quid for the real thing (all spent on stella) so bought the cheaper yellow ones..i hope that clears it up for ya:thumbsup:
Mod. Note
Not sure what a Gaylord is but please keep the use of it as a term of abuse out of the thread.
Just stay away from the personal abuse and keep to teh subject.
Cheers

happy member of the house of commons i think
Like it! :D
You might be onto summat there you know!
Sheffield Hallam Uni have had some made....17 yr olds at education fairs go mad for them....
I do keep seeing grown men wear them and think its a little funny. The sentiment is fine in a charities case, but these same men, also sporting tight powder pink t shirts would have smacked any man dressed similar a year or so back. Ah....townies, dontcha love how fickle they are :)
Say what you like about the merits of wearing them (although I don't see why it offends people quite so much :)), that's £33 million for the Livestrong foundation alone that I rather doubt would have been generated without them...
I actually have about 50 yellow ones that are left over from a large number I imported from the States (yes they are genuine (http://www.photorich.co.uk/temp/livestrong-front.jpg)) if anyone wants one...
beansfeast 17-06-2005, 16:56 Depends how much you're selling them for? ;)
Anything over a pound would be "extra profit" that I'll donate back. Usually I ask for a couple of quid - if you're too tight for that then there's no hope for you! ;) If anyone wants one, send me a PM.
I say, girls and boys alike wear these bands, they come in hundreds of different colours, the thing is, now sellers of non-charitable things have realised that they are son popular, most of them are fake, and not a peny of your money will go to charity I'm afraid.
MagicBert 24-06-2005, 15:21 I wear my MakePovertyHistory one and Radio 1 Beat Bullying one cos they're both things I believe in strongly...
When people wear them for the right reasons, they're a good thing, IMO.
HMV are selling the MPH ones over the counter for £1 btw :)

Is it true the Beat Bullying one comes as a leather knuckleduster?

No but if you twist it you can produce a nasty indian burn.

This is a very nasty post. As is the one below it by Zamo.
I wear a pink breast cancer wrist band in support of someone close to me who is recovering from cancer, and I've just put on a white Make Poverty History band because I live in Edinburgh and I'm planning on taking part in the G8 marches next week.
Wristbands have become a bit of a youth fashion statement, and a lot of the kids are wearing cheap immitations rather than the real thing.
But in the case of the genuine wristbands, I really don't see how showing your support for a charity openly, therefore helping to publicise its cause, can make you a GAYLORD or SCUM.
I would suggest that this description would be better suited to those cynics who never put their hands in their pockets!

Didn't they use to have those gold ankle bracelets as an indicator at one time for the same thing depended on what ankle the women where wearing them.
