The official website has been hinting at some exciting news since the redesign a bit back. I know Rob Llewellyn dropped hints at the convention last week, and am excited, but also nervous.

I hope that the one-off episode.....
*Finally resolves that bloody cliffhanger!
*Has the feel of classic Dwarf
*Paves the way for perhaps a few more mini movie episodes

I hope it doesn't....
*Suck ass like Season 5 did (and to a lesser degree season 6)
*Feel all forced and fanboyish
*Pad out with high-tech effects and action - lets keep it simply and cheesy.
*Basically, I hope this doesn't end up a mess.

Of Jar Jar bloody Binks, the most annoying character ever to "grace" a sci-fi franchise!

As for Red Dwarf, 10 years ago rang, they want their "cult" sci-fi comedy back. Seriously who other than hardcore RD fans will care?

Red Dwarf went all crap before it ended. From Season 5 onwards it was embarrassingly bad.

On the plus side, the only way they could plumb the same depths is if they get Jasper Carrot on the writing team, which isn't likely.

Hang on a second. Why are people slating series 5 and 6? there was only 1 episode from series 7 and 8 worth watching. Those were dreadful. (Tikka to ride being the episode)

Scozzie
30-08-2008, 17:25
once they got a budget of more that £10 per episode it wasn't the same.
I couldn't watch it after that chick came in to it and Kryton went all emotional.

the new one will have a huge budget - just gives them a better opportunity to make it completely crap.

I hope I'm proven wrong.

I agree that from series 7 things went seriously downhill, for multiple reasons, but, a lot of people was dubious about Doctor Who when that started, and now it is a massive hit, same with any of the Star Trek series, rather than damming it before it appears, let's see what happens, then, form our opinions.

Oh, and Scozzie, sorry to be pendantic, but, it is Kryten, not ton.

Bladesman

Actually a 1 off episode is probably the best approach.

Have a good crack at that since the movie is never ever going to happen.

I reckon it will be rather good and even if it isnt I dont think it would matter too much. I doubt they can do a one off episode that could be worse than series 8 anyway.

Nope...definitely mean series 5 and 6. Became too much about the sci-fi and not enough about the comedy. Series 7 doesn't register on my memory banks at all, so not going to comment on that! Series 8 had some moments (the canaries for a start) and potential, and the sci-fi was toned down a tad - but the budget for the effects was too high, and too low at the same time (the T-Rex was terrible).

Red Dwarf was fantastic to start with (The End, Future Echoes and Me2 were highlights), got better in the second season (Kryten, Better Than Life, Stasis Leak and Queeg) , three and four were classics (Marooned, Backwards, Polymorph, Last Day, Camille, White Hole, Justice and Meltdown). Season five only has Back To Reality which is rewatchable (Quarantine was funny at the time, but not on repeated viewings). Six has Gunmen of the Apocalypse and Out of Time going for it. Seven....erm....move along...nothing to rewatch here! Eight had Cassandra (what an episode), some of the 3 part Back In The Red (especially Rimmer getting the sexual magnetism stuff), and the genius of Krytie TV, plus the cliffhanger of Only The Good....

Nope, 5 and 6 just don't work for me (and 7 never existed....at all.....ever!)

Just goes to show how subjective it is really. Series 5 is my favourite of all of them. The whole series was consistently brilliant in my opinion.

You say that Back to Reality and, to a lesser degree, Quarantine are the only episodes worth watching, but what about Holoship, The Inquisitor, Terrorform and Demons and Angels? All brilliant episodes and among the best ever made as far as I'm concerned.

Holoship was terrible (in my opinion of course), Inquisitor was alright, but not rewatchable to any degree, and the other two don't rate either way in my eyes, and were just average.

Like you say, it is very subjective, and on the Red Dwarf forums debate has raged for years over the best and worst of the show (although everyone is in agreement that series 7 was best forgotten).

Yeah I can't possibly argue with that. It had some funny moments but they were too few and far between.

The biggest problems with series 7 were that it used a 'movie style' camerawork, and wasn't filmed in front of an audience - thus they couldn't judge whether a joke was actually funny or not until broadcast.

New Red Dwarf Specials Confirmed

19 September, 2008

New specials? Proper information? After all the rumours? Oh smeg yes.

reddwarf.co.uk has the facts. As announced by Robert Llewellyn for Grant Naylor Productions this week at the UKTV seasonal press launch, the project is a short series of brand new specials to celebrate the 21st birthday of Red Dwarf.

New Red Dwarf Specials Confirmed New Red Dwarf Specials Confirmed New Red Dwarf Specials Confirmed

Doug Naylor will be masterminding the four half-hour instalments, and the regular cast will all be reprising their iconic roles. They are being made by GNP for UKTV's free-to-air channel, Dave - our new best friends!

Red Dwarf repeats on Dave - including an anniversary weekend run - have picked up remarkable numbers since the channel was reborn on Freeview, and it's becoming clear to all concerned that the show is picking a new, third generation audience. With the usual involvement from Red Dwarf partners BBC Worldwide, you can also expect international broadcasts to follow (and, we'd imagine, a top-quality DVD release in the fullness of time).

"It's very new news to me - I really only fully heard the details yesterday," Robert told comedian/host Michael McIntyre. "We're doing four new shows with the original cast. Two of them are going to be, like, proper episodes of Red Dwarf. One of them is so exciting I've been asked not to say anything about that because other people will steal the idea - and it is a great idea, quite challenging for us as performers. And the other one is a kind of behind-the-scenes-y... the truth. There's been so many rumours and gossip about Red Dwarf, about whether there's going to be a movie and whether we all get on, all those things... The downside for me, which is just dawning on me now, is I've got to do the 'rubber' thing again, which I haven't done for ten years."

For the record, and direct from the makers, the details of the four shows right now - while wholly subject to change - are:

Show One - The Making Of The Specials
A highly entertaining look at what goes on behind the scenes on a Red Dwarf production.

Show Two - Red Dwarf Special: Part One
The cast get back into character, and costume, a decade on...

Show Three - Red Dwarf Special: Part Two
The adventure continues...

Show Four - A Clip Show With a Serious Difference
The cast do it their way. Red Dwarf as you have never, ever seen it before!

The shows will broadcast sometime in 2009 and, if successful, could pave the way for further Red Dwarf TV projects. Thanks to movie and broadcaster wrangles, Grant Naylor haven't been in a position to produce new Red Dwarf since Series VIII went out to audiences of over eight million in 1999. This exciting development suggests a new and shiny future for everyone's favourite sci-fi comedy.

To be kept in the loop as we cover the new production, register your email address with reddwarf.co.uk in the box at the bottom of the page.

Back for a two-parter (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7851989.stm) over the Easter weekend.
The new two-part series Red Dwarf: Back to Earth will be followed by a "no holds barred" episode without sets, special effects or autocue.

The weekend will climax with Red Dwarf: the Making of Back to Earth, a behind-the-scenes special from the new episodes.
Please, no Kochanski...

The new two-parter will begin a decade on from when the crew of the Red Dwarf were last seen, with a "shock development" throwing Rimmer, Lister, Cat and Kryten back to Earth.
From here (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/jan/27/red-dwarf-cast-reunited).

I must admit I'm having another 'don't bugger about with the classics' moment here. Better to break out the 88-93 DVD box sets than resurrect a spectre of the 1997 travesty.

I don't....it achieved greatness and cult status and any remake will only diminish and cheapen it.

you can't cheapen it anymore than the last two series!! may as well bash out some more coz it can't be worse i'd of thought.

Don't know how they managed it but Dave Lister is the only likeable character left to me....Kryten became rubbish from the first time he cried, Cat seems to have strange teeth now.. that make him pull really stuipd facial expressions all the time....and rimmer....well...again seems to be relying on pulling stupid faces....maybe its due to the writing not providing them with good enough jokes so they feel they have to try to make it funnier by doing stuch things.

Remember when they used to all just sit in a small space, read the script and we'd all laugh?....seems a distant memory.

Wrong. They actually end up on Coronation Street. One of my favourite series ever in a crossover with a crappy soap opera. Should remember never to get my hopes up.

poor, and a studio audience wouldnt have added any laughter coz there was nothing to laugh at.... i laughed once where rimmer was forced to hump a table...but that was it. There just was not enough jokes, i remember when a 30min episode had soooo much going on...now a 3 parter passes me by and to be honest not a lot happened!

Red dwarf was always best when each individual episode was something new...when the whole series starts being one big episode it's boring as hell.

Seems a little more than a coincidence that red dwarf got poor when Rob Grant stopped writing it.

Disappointing on so many levels.

Too much CGI, not enough storyline.

A 1.5 hour badly re-told version of one of the best episodes ever (Back To Reality), and too much of a nod to the grossly over-rated Blade Runner.

The characters didn't interact well at all, considering how long they'd known each other. I got a "Simon and Garfunkel uneasy reunion" feeling throughout.

If I didn't know better I'd say that they all did their lines alone and they were superimposed together in the scenes.

The typing bit was amusing, but the episode where Lister has Kryten's hand and eyeball down his trousers and is typing for help on the computer with Cat is FAR funnier.

And that eastern european woman was not in it nearly enough.

Big Suze. See much more of her in Peep Show.

The characters didn't interact well at all, considering how long they'd known each other. I got a "Simon and Garfunkel uneasy reunion" feeling throughout.

If I didn't know better I'd say that they all did their lines alone and they were superimposed together in the scenes.

So it wasn't just me who picked up on this then. There just didn't seem to be any chemistry between them at all.

I cannot express how disappointed I was with the whole thing. It just didn't have the feel of Red Dwarf and, sadly, just wasn't funny enough to be enjoyable.

Should have left it well alone I think.

If RD had ended on a high, I'd have been extremely disappointed.

But series 7 and 8 were both quite poor so my hopes weren't built up too high.

The over-hyping didn't help much though. Just like the Ricky Gervaise episode of the Simpsons from a couple of years ago.

Their heart didn't seem to be in it, actors and writer. They looked like they grudgingly did it for the money.

I did enjoy it and being all done 3 ep's it felt to rushed, and lacking in some life.

will not stop me getting it when it comes out on dvd

I have just finished watching all 3 episodes. Quite frankly they were rubbish!!! No life in it at all!!! As people have said on this thread, the cast seemed like they were going through the motions but not really enjoying it. I was a massive fan of the series until 7 (after that it was just as bad as this one off) I think only having Doug Naylor writing this is very evident. Grant & Naylor were Red Dwarf. Lets hope he sees sense and knocks the film on the head!!! Also a little odd that BBC 2 (home of the show) didnt want to take the 3 episodes!!

I dont know if I liked these 3 episodes.

It left alot unanswered really for me but I like the way they made it all tie together as an illusion down to the dispair(joy) squid.

Could of all been made into one bumper episode though.

They have blatently left that open to do a film or something.

i think it would of worked better as one long episode :hihi: but this way they get us to sit there for 3 nights in a row and bump their ratings up :gag:

has been also said that if these 3 are a hit they will look into making the film. if they do lets hope they do get the old Red Dwarf back

I couldn't help but think the writer has plagiarized The league of gents a bit too much.

Loose the canned laughter (League series one and two had canned laughted however, they dropped it with making series three).

Make the charicters come to live and appear in the real world and make them chase their creator. . (league of gents feature lenght film).

Having the charicters show a copy of their own material on video / dvd (again, league).

Having said that, it was a vast improvement on the last 2 series that were made into a freakish carry-on / we're only doing this for the money and cause you want it sort of affair.

I also felt it would have worked better by leaving a day or two between broadcasting the episodes, just to get a hint of the nostalgia we used to have after finishing watching a new episode, realising we've got 6 days, 23 hours and 30 minutes to wait before we can watch the next one.

I used to love Red Dwarf almost obsessively. I used to watch it every morning before my paper round. :D But ever since the massive wait for series 7. When it was coming then it wasnt. Then the Rape trail with rumours that Chris Barrie refused to work with him. When it finally came it was disappointing. It was like they were trying too hard to be intelligent sci fi. I totally agree with you Taxman about kachanzki. Lister was supposed to be in awe of the women and obsessed and oblivious to being constantly beaten down. Yet they just swapped her. It then becomes hard to remember that he was meant to be completely in love with her.

Why do they never show the first ones on Dave? They were by far the funniest ones and consisted mainly of a rickety set and some brilliant one liners. The humour for me was in the simplicity and the way the cast delivered the lines.
