i am trying to get my privet hedge to grow faster,i have been told just to prune it twice a year,has anyone got any ideas,its 3ft at the moment,,,,

If you find out, let me know. My not too tightly wrapped next door neighbor has just hacked the hell out of the beautiful japanese boxwood hedge between our houses.

She says she's in the middle of some project and it will all look better soon. :rant:

You could always try watering it with miracle grow....:hihi:

But sometimes you just have to wait....I have a laurel that if I had bought at 5 ft would have cost me £69 at 1ft it cost £5 but I will have to wait 5/8 years for it to reach 5 ft :|

Replace it with pyrocanthus or hawthorn?

Of course, once it's growing faster, how are you going to get it to stop when it's the right height? or will you get fed up with cutting it?

Wouldn't recommend that - we had a Russian Vine in our old house because we were impatient and wanted it to grow fast...after 2 years it was literally taking over the garden...we had to cut it down completely...:(

Russian vine is in a league of it's own though ;)

Just above that 'cemetary weed' as my sister calls it. The heart shaped leafy creeper that has white bell shaped flowers

When your privet gets to over 10ft like mine you lose patience and start to cut it to 4ft, like I did yesterday. Now I need a skip........

Dig chicken manure in around the roots, water often and keep the sides trimmed.
Trimming the top shoots will not speed up vertical growth (it will actually slow it a little) but will encourage it to form a thicker/denser hedge which is better for you in the long run.

Most gardens I've seen with large hedges have a Cortina/escort engine in them. Not sure if this helps the garden or not but have a look round parts of S5 and you'll see what I mean...

Not sure it'd help them grow though, you might not wanna try it on your hedge, but maybe a neighbour who you don't like first? :heyhey:

Come dig up the one outside my house, as fast as I cut the bloody thing, its grown back in about 2 weeks.
