I've seen a thread about the Harold Jackson Primary School in Bradway, but can anyone tell me who Harold Jackson was and, better still, where I can find out more info about him?

I did hear the Harold Jackson School was heavily oversubscribed because of it's popularity, don't know if that's true...

Don't know but wouldn't be surprised, being in a nice middle-class catchment area. I doubt if that popularity has anything to do with the person after whom it is named?

I'm sure it hasn't, just more of a casual observation........

I can promise you that your informant is wrong, the school is NOT oversubscribed in spite of being a terrific school. The falling birth rate has hit it, as it has many other schools. There are spaces there if anyone is interested. Part of the problem the school has is that not only is it tucked away down a side road , hence easily bypassed, but apparently a lot of people think it is a school for "posh" people precisely because of it's mane- it sounds like a private school.

Another popular misunderstanding- the catchment of the school is Bradway ( the nice middle-class bit I'm guessing you referred to) but also Lowedges, which is probably not quite as middle-class!

From years on the 'chalk face', I believe you, as I am all too aware of Sheffield Education's policy of mixing up catchment areas!

When I went there in the late 80's early 90's there were no kids from Lowedges.

Catchments change, according to the Education Authority, the number of children available in the existing catchment, the reputation of the school and other local schools. At the moment there is a good assortment of kids from a range of backgrounds including Lowedges and other local areas. Can only be a good thing IMO to mix us all up, but I'm certain not everyone will agree!
