For the last 2 days I've left the car at home and cycled to work :-) I'm really proud of myself. :-) May not sound like much to some but considering i'm over weight and under fit i'm pretty chuffed. thing is i only lose about 5 mins each way vs driving so i think i may stick with it (though I'm off till mon so we'll see when i'm half asleep)

I try to cycle to work as often as poss and am also overweight. In fact, according to those Body Mass Index calculator things, I am 'morbidly obese'. The problem is, being a primary school teacher I am usually laden with 'stuff' and need to use the car. And I love my car, and it's stereo. However, I have got the bike ready as tomorrow I will be able to travel light - though 'light' is hardly the word, since I will be carting myself the three hilly miles to work. My sandwiches are quite hefty, too. I think it's great that you've managed two days - try and keep it up! I generally find that if you can maintain the cycling for a week the results begin to show, as long as you can keep off the pies/sausages of an evening.

My friend Steve and I usually usher in a 'new age of rigour and self-denial' every March, which involves going for outlandishly long rides in the Peak District, eating sensibly, being good etc etc. The NAORASD is invariably in tatters by April. A few years ago, on our very first trip of the new season's New Age Of Rigour And Self Denial, Steve stopped at a lovely little bridge we pass over regularly, and produced from his backpack a bottle of port, two glasses and two fine cigars. The NAORASD was over already.............
