Hi guys does anyone remember the sponsored walk we did last year for Rain? :D

http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh148/Albertandtilly/sponsored%20dog%20walk/86.jpg

We managed to raise over a £1000 which was amazing.

Well a year has nearly passed since the last walk so i think it is time to have another go.

So his year the walk will be held Sunday 8th March 09 at Rothervalley Country Park. We will aim to meet at 11am for a 11.15am start to the walk.
If we could meet at the Crystal peaks side car park located

http://maps.google.com/maps/mm?ie=UTF8&hl=en&ll=53.334256,-1.328487&spn=0.046743,0.1157&z=13

If you look at the map you will see Rother vally and a roundabout leading onto meadowgate Lane, just before the roundabout there is a car park on the left, you can park in there and that will be our meeting point.
We will then have a nice 30-45min stroll before reaching the picnic area where we can have a break. There is a cafe where you can purchase refreshments and we will provide water and treats for the dogs. I shall also make some yummies for anyone who would like some.
When everyone is ready we can set off and do the last half of the walk.

Anyone is welcome to join the walk with or without a dog :). We just ask that you either collect sponsorship or make a one of donation of £7 which is enough to kennel one dog for one day.

Please email me at rr_sponsoredwalk09@yahoo.co.uk for a sponsorship form and walkers guide or for further details. If needed i can post forms to people if you provide me with your address.

Right now the boring bit. From a health and safety perspective we need to remember that there will be alot of dogs and humans all together in one place. Last year was great we had no problems due to everyone being very responsible, and thinking of others.
If you wish to run your dog off lead during the walk the off leaders will walk ahead at the front of the group. It will be the responsibility of the owner to maintain control of their dog (s) at all times. Those that choose to remain in the on-lead group behind are not to be pestered by off lead dogs - this is a must (some of the dogs may be nervous, aggressive or uncomfortable around off leaders), nor are any members of the general public who are using the park at the time to be bothered.

Jarvis i wondered if you would be able to design me a poster? The ones you have done for Rotherham dogs is so good, i was hoping you could do something to advertise the walk for us :D if you can't no bother xx

Sorry strix :P we weren't but it would be good if we could this year. I need to do a writeup for the Rain website and have asked Jarvis if she could do some posters to distribute and it would be great if someone could look at publicity for me :D you volunterring :hihi:

Was it really a year ago? It was a bit too damp for Sophie and whilst I know she is more than capable of walking much further, I don't think I'll risk it again, just in case. :)

However, I'll join in and either bring along a substitute or two or I could pick up one of RR's residents to have a jaunt out, provided I can sort out a dog guard.

crates are available to loan for Rain Rescue dogs ;)

That sounds like so much fun, but my dog likes to just randomly bark at other dogs which could be quite annoying if it happened throughout the walk! :( If I had a normal dog I'd do it!
Although on the other hand it might make her better around other dogs is she sees lots at once.
But then on the other other hand, she might try and start fights with them all and then I might get attacked by a bunch of dogs that she's annoyed. :( She likes to run up to big dogs and bark at them, then run behind me. I think she must think she's helping my fear of big dogs, or she thinks it's funny!

If any other abnormal dogs are going, then maybe we'll go coz then she might blend in, haha!

Also my dog is scared of the geese at rother valley. She doesn't bark at them and run and hide behind me though which is good, coz they scare me too!

It sounds like everybody is sensible Mandie, and Rother Valley is a really big park, so if you find she's more comfortable just walking with one or two others then I'm sure Adz will get you all organised :)

Four or six should do it shouldn't it? (if his offer still stands)

I love Sophie  but your right it was to damp for her.

That sounds brilliant i looked into getting some sash's done last year but they were to expensive so if you could get these it would be great :D

i need to try and see if we can get a paper to follow the event and come and take some pics and do a writeup, i am not sure how to go about it though so if anyone has any ideas

Just ring the star and tell them what you're up to, what Rain Rescue does to rescue and rehome dogs and how much you raised last year etc

Actually - best check that RainRescue is okay with the publicity  things like this can lead to us being overwhelmed with people trying to dump their pets on us :(

I think the advertising thing would be great.

Plus - the money coming in is so needed - I was only totting up funds spent already this week
We have
Jake - the staffy that came to us 50% of his proper weight - bill currently stands at £360 - donations in so far £18
Reggie - been in boarding for nearly 4 months @ £140 per month thankfully was castrated or would have been another £100 on top, vac'd flead, microchipped, coat, chews, bones - and transport - (phew daren't add that one up), went to a FANTASTIC new home this weekend, and we didn't ask for a donation . We were just so pleased he got a good home

Transport of 3 dogs last week - paid out £45
bought some wormers £145
boarding for between 3 and 5 dogs over the last week
transport costs expected this week - around £150 + to get 5 dogs to safe rescue places
Vet fees for the new Nougat to be castrated - around £100 + chip, flea, worm (food donated free by fosterer)
Stamps for posting the new flyers out - £50 cos they large envelopes

It all adds up doesn't it - and thats just a weeks worth.
So thank you everyone who is thinking of raising money towards our funds - we always desperately need it - no matter how much people do volunteer for free - there's always some bill we can't manage to get for nothing.

Hopefully now that the new RSPCA centre is well and truly open - this should take some of the pressure off small rescues like us - I know me for one will be loosing my job if I have another day of phone calls like today trying to get these dogs transported half way around the country - but at least they will be safe and it will take a bit of pressure off the council spaces.

I don't know how you do all this and work, have a family and your own animals :( i for one couldn't. This is why i for one want to try and raise some money, so we can the pressure slightly and know that there are some funds to help dogs that need it. I really hope we can do as well as last year Rain :)

Ha - thanks Adz - as u know - i get stressed out but
there really just isn't anyone else to help - Dawn does a great job from Sheffield helping out with them - and that saves loads - but other than that - hardly any rescues are taking out of the Sheffield Council Stray kennels.

We really need to get more people involved to ease the burden of this problem that Sheffield has.

My problem is like you - once that you see those eyes and think they are going to be put to sleep just because there is no room for them - it does me in and I can't sleep

Why should they have to die just cos they are a staffy and nobody wants them, and nobody is highlighting that they are there looking for a home. Once I have seen them - it cracks me up to think about loosing them - and so will do all that I can to try to get other local groups to help ease the burden too.

Plus - don't forget - the volunteers that do volunteer are really great and I really believe that the Sheffield Forum Pet Section is really pulling together to help with it all until eventually - we may make a difference to those to come. Every single bit of help that people do towards this - does make a difference, and if everyone does just the bit they can - its not quite as bad is it.

Deffo the library too

If you're at Crystal Peaks, you could ask Sainsbury's and Wilcos if they'll put them on staff notice boards (they can't have them up in the shop)

All looking good then Mrs Adz - I hope its going well

I will do a mail shot to my in box and see if we can drum up some more walkers that way too. I know that Geerarffe and Ricky's new dad are also druming up some people which should be good.

Anyone fancy doing an article to the Star about it? Maybe it would bring us some donations even if people couldn't do the walk - please remember to point out that donations can be made to the charity via the website and we can claim Gift Aid if the people have paid tax during this year which adds an extra .28p in every pound that we receive.

I have sent emails out to everyone I know this last couple of weeks - mind you i think most people have me listed as junk mail (damn)

Hope everyone is coming - and starting to get some sponsorers or coughing up if they are throwing in a lame excuse.

We have managed to take 4 dogs out of the pound today to safety down south - thats 4 lives that will now have the benefit of total health checks and be spayed and then responsibly rehomed. We managed to transport them cos my o/h took the day off work and took them down for me. I have been trying to get them moved all week but no joy - and we almost lost those rescue spaces - transport is just so hard to organise and arrange - with volunteers not always able to drive.

Thanks to Paul once again for offering to go this weekend - he's been so good with driving for us.

See you all in a couple of weeks then....

thanks for coming and supporting us - I will bring something from the kennels for you to walk as long as whats in is well enough to come. At the moment we have just Minnie in kennels - who is just recovering from Kennel cough - but hopefully she may be ok by next weekend. Would you send me a pm if you are still going Saturday Night just to let me know you would like a dog to walk - and I will make sure we find something.

If ever you want to come over to the kennels to walk when you are free - drop me a line too

On last years walk someone did us all a name label, which was great for introductions. Could we get those done again do you think? Not sure who did them but it was a great idea.

Adz
03-03-2009, 12:01
Katieb did them last year Jarvis but i do not think she is coming as have not heard anything from her and i know she is very busy.

Your right they were good though. We also have alot of people coming who are not off SF so i could bring stickers and if people wanted to write their name that would be nice.

JarvisCocker
03-03-2009, 12:11
It was just a thought but I think it worked really well last year, people recognised the user name and started chatting, bit of an ice breaker.

Adz
03-03-2009, 12:15
Jarvis are you bringing any treats? We could see if anyone would like to buy before people head off? I do hehe

JarvisCocker
03-03-2009, 12:19
I wasn't going to bring any Adz, as I didn't want people thinking I was coming for my own benefit. I will bring some leaflets and cards with me and am happy to talk to anyone if they are interested. I can take orders on the day too if anyone would like to do that.

If I get time before Sunday I'll make some training treats. Evie has ran out anyway and they are the best way of getting her back if she decides to go selectively deaf! People can try them out them. I may, if I get time too bring some samples to dish out.

Adz

Just a reminder - everyone the walk is on Sunday at 11am at Rothervalley but don't forget it does not start at the main entrance. We are meeting on the crystal peaks side near Direct cars.
It doesn't matter if you haven't got sponsorship just come along and you can make a small donation on the day as every little bit helps Rain to keep helping our poundies in Sheffield and other nearby areas.

If you need any info that is not on this thread or any of the links PM me or email at rr_sponsoredwalk09@yahoo.co.uk. I am working this afternoon so i may not reply until this evening but i will check my email and messages tonight and tomorrow.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday and Albert is tuning his voice in ready for tom to greet you all!!!

is there anything more specific about where the meet is? We are planning on coming and am not that familiar with rother valley will that entrance be signposted? :)

JarvisCocker
06-03-2009, 21:13
I didn't think I would find the meeting place last year but it's really easy. Do you know where Direct Cards is, past Crystal Peaks? When you get to the traffic lights, if Direct Cars is on your left, turn left at the lights, follow that road all the way along to until you get to a T junction, then turn left again. The car park where we are meeting is a little way up and on the right, I think theres a parking signpost.

Thanks for that Jarvis - i didn't know where that entrance was either. So - if coming from the sheffield parkway, see Direct Cars on the lhs, do you turn left at the direct cars road - and then drive past their entrance?

We are aiming to be there a bit early - but i gotta go pick some dogs up for a walk first - should be fun - i will prob. get there as u have all done. eeek

Yep thats right Rain, drive past the entrance to Direct Cars (this will be on your right) go all the way along that road until you get to a T junction and then turn left there.

Just been stuffing your envelopes with the help of Evie, who can't decide where to sit on the sofa, so I have to keep moving them, and Spangle who is trying desperately to get in the envelope box, and is sat in the middle of the ones done! pets eh!

Hi guys thanks to everyone who came along despite the rain i think we had a good time.

Albert is asleep on the sofa wrapped up with Tilly laying on top of him they are zonked.
I haven't even managed to get Albert in the bath think i may just brush everything of him later tonight.

I also have my fingers crossed that we raise some much needed cash Rain need it more than ever with quite a few dogs in boarding. We got £150 in cash from just a few people today so i am quite hopeful that we will have raised a good few quid.
Thanks again everyone and great to see everyone and doggles of coursexx

Thanks everyone for turning out - it was a lovely day and little Minnie fell fast asleep in the back of the van going home - it was a shame to put her back in the lonely kennel after she had been so good.

I am going to try to load the pics up - it looks amazing how many where there and so great of everyone to come and also show us the dogs that they have taken on and hey presto - rescue dogs aint that bad after all are they.

My big Homer had obviously been gulping down puddles and cake - he has just brought up half of Rother Valley I think, and now is feeling a little quezy so gone for some shut-eye.

I really was amazed to see some of the dogs that have passed through Rain's hands - but none so brilliant to see than Billy - who had gone from being on deaths door, into Auntie Kays foster home, where we thought he had gone home to die. The fantastic specimen of a rottie that we met today - was a brilliant example of the breed and his lovely new family home. Pity dogs like that don't hit the papers isn't it.

Billy had been starved and abused for probably most of his short life. When we got him from Cliff Kennels in December 2007 - he had no hair on his back, was all skin and bone and couldn't hardly lift his head up to eat. Now - in a perfect family setting - it makes it worth while and is what rescue is all about.

Thank you -

There's something really satisfying about a snoring dog on the sofa..... Sandy had a great time and loved her play with Evie.

Hope we raised a few pounds for the not so lucky dogs, good to chat to a few of you.

Let me know if you ever fancy a walk with the pair of them. We don't live that far from each other. They got on really well, Evie totally ignores a lot of dogs, but she seemed to really like Sandy.

Yep forgot to say it was great seeing dogs that had come out of the pound like dolly and George, Yogi who was ben, Sid the whippie who i think went home with Tillys coat lol. And of course billy who i remember hearing about. So nice to see dogs doing what dogs should be doing - having a great time x

Brude's snoring loudly in his faux sheepskin basket from Lotti :D

He wasn't impressed with being lured upstairs, and flatly refused to get in the shower - so went in with a towel wrapped round him so he couldn't struggle :P

I lost him briefly, and when I found him, he was cantering about with a small black dog with pricked up ears - from a distance it looked like Clive!

When I approached him he just stood still and pretended he wasn't doing anything, but when I asked if he thought it was Clive he wagged his tail sheepishly and looked embarrassed :hihi:

It was really great to put a couple of faces to names, and lovely to see so many dogs enjoying the British weather :D

The carpark was empty when we got back!

I'd like to thank everyone for today. I didn't expect an easy time walking with a dog anxious of others, but was impressed with the respect that everyone paid to each other, dogs and owners alike.

I know this was a fund raising event for Rain Rescue but I have to say thank you for helping Sox too, he appreciated it. He had a really great day and whilst he had a few moments, he proved that he is generally a lovely and easy dog to be with. His manners around people are excellent and he just needs some polish on his doggy etiquette.

My friends brought their dogs along, one of them is extremely dominant and unpredictable around other dogs and without the respect that was shown today, it may not have been as pleasant and educational as it was for them.

Sponsored dog walks aren't only about raising funds, they're a blessing in many ways.

I hope this one raised much more than last year, it was definately worth it for Sox!

Yep, that was me, keeping my adrenaline down and maintaining a low profile just in case. It's amazing how a dog can be tarred with a brush that really isn't deserving and that's a kennel life for you.:( The little aggression he showed could easily be ironed out with some consistency.

My heart was bursting when we got back to the kennels and he put his head on my lap and did a deep soulful sigh and stared straight into my eyes! There is a fabulously obedient dog desperate for a lot of love there.

Well done Fishpole and Sox i must say i was very impressed with how well he coped and like you say with consistency he would continue to improve and get over his fears.

I think Rain mentioned doing a special on him on the site what do you think?? It may raise his profile a bit and hopefully the right home will find him.

I am so pleased that the friends who came with you had a good time although i am conscious that i didn't really get to speak to everyone so i hope they don't think we are rude and ignorant, we are very grateful for their contribution and support.

I've thought quite a bit since Sunday.

I know several dogs that would be suited to walking with him but sadly it's down to time both for me and the owners of the other dogs. It might be a different matter if we were all around the corner.

The thing is that he doesn't actually need an awful lot of work and the regular dog walkers are very fond of him as it is, because he's not really that much of a problem. Whilst he was out with us Sunday, someone was very disappointed at not being able to take him out.

Quite a few people know him and understand that it's no big deal, but to a prospective owner, he doesn't have much appeal in the looks department and if he does a barky thing at other dogs whilst they're trying him out, it can be off putting.

It's brilliant that the dogs are lucky to be walked as often as they are but there will undoubtedly be different ways of handling. That is something that simply can't be avoided. What Sox really needs is a home with the regularity and consistency that it brings.

Adz, yep he does need a higher profile. I believe he's going to be having his own Facebook page soon - whatever that means! I need to have a chat with Rain, I'm also rather worried that she might have caught my profile in the numerous photos she took. :hihi:

I too had a lovely day and can't thank Adz enough for being bothered to organise it. Sometimes once you commit to something, it seems a great deal but really - once you break it down - its not that bad - and Sunday was a perfect example of that.

It was fantastic to see so many of the dogs that we had all seen on the rain pages - and to be with great owners - who loved them and put up with the fact that they were just normal dogs - who needed helping - thats all.

Whitebull you are so right, wasn't it a nice friendly atmosphere - so many nice people - asking for nothing, but enjoying the day out with the dog - I even managed to forget the snow.

I loved your friends' little fluff ball even though I know he was a pain in the butt for her, but I think she now realises she is fighting with a big problem, he is the boss, and I hope she will manage to find someone local to be able to help her through it.

I am looking forward to the next social event that Adz organises - and she may be pulling in a few people to help her too if you are up for it?

Adz, you were almost as worried this year as you were last. It's best to just organise the outing, lay the ground rules and then stop worrying because everything else is out of your control. I can understand why the acting world is associated with the saying "never work with children or animals" because nothing will ever go according to plan, but they always work out brilliantly in the end - somehow! It was another great event and you should congratulate yourself on it being so successful.
