Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore
Select a date before everything went pear shaped. This is only on Windows XP.

You can do the same thing with Vista.

Some viruses disable antivirus software and block internet access to prevent you fixing them. Not sure why the sound would stop working though.
If system restore doesn't sort it, I would disconnect the internet cable (or switch off the wirless adaptor) in case the machine has been hijacked and run a virus check from a bootable CD - presumably your antivirus software has the option to make a bootable CD?

has he been looking at naughty pics on the net? sounds like a downloaded malicious application to me....

It quite possible for the restore dialogue box text to disappear altogether as I once discovered when a friend requested help on his computer.
I think the language setting in registry for restore program was messed up by the virus as to why it was blank.
I had to go back home and get my laptop so I could read what the missing text should be saying.
It recovered OK in the end.
lol zanutabor no. nothing at all works not even my printer.
