hi guys

Our little Nikki noodle the Syrian hamster needs a few good wishes.

Poor little lad has had a tumour come up on right fore leg :(. As it has come up so quickly the chances are that in 2 weeks time it could possibly be as big as his foot and bleeding. So we have decided to opt for surgery to try and remove it and all being well he should be fine.

I need to ask a favour though has anyone got a small single storey cage we could borrow? He has a cage but it is to large to take to the vets and his carrier has nowhere for a water bottle to sit. He needs a small cage to recouperate in after his op and also for the first few days while his foot heals.

If you could help we would be most grateful and we can come and collect it from you.

Here is the little lad himself  i do hope he comes back to me :shakes:

they had a section of bargain pet stuff in tesco abbeydale road, a couple of rows from the dog food, and they were selling hamster starter cages... I remember looking and thinking they were a little small! Might do the job?

I had a tumour removed from my hamsters back once and he was just fine! He came through the anaesthetic no problems and his bald patch soon grew back! Good luck :)

There is a small, single storey cage at Gemima's shop, Adz. It had been donated for a future jumble sale, but I'm sure you could borrow it or buy for a small donation (there is a tin at the shop :)).

It needs a clean up but nothing major. I hope your little fella gets well.

Thanks for the well wishes guys and Minxykitten what you have said is really reassuring. I am nervous as we lost our guinea pig under a GA last year when she had to have her teeth filed but he is fit and well despite him being nearly 3 now so fingers crossed he will be fine.

I have had some really kind offers of cages i shall get back to people and let them know. Thanks ever so much everyone xx

Ive had two hamsters now go through surgery and both made it no problems, ones eye popped out so she had to have it sewn up. I think they put her in a cola bottle with a little anesthetic in it to send her to sleep for a little while..good luck! x

Pigs don't need GA for teeth, for future ref if anyone has a pig with teeth probs see a vet who will do it awake :)

Posting on this thread, rather than starting a new one.

I cleaned my hamster out this morning- he's a robovski, about 20ish months old now. And I noticed a lump on one of his sides- I've not noticed it before/sure it wasnt there last week.
He's not a hamster I can really pick up for very long- too quick/timid, so it's hard to fully look him over/dont want to hurt him
Just a bit worried- I've been reading online that tumours are common in older hamsters, and that if it doesnt look like its in pain, to leave it alone.
Is there an obvious way to tell whether its a tumour or an abcess? there's nothing in his cage that could have caused an injury
I dont think, at Caspers age he'd survive an aneasthetic/would be really stressful to take him to the vets. But how can you tell if a hamsters in pain? I dont want him suffering- he seems to be running around fine/eating/drinking

How big of a lump is it? Is it under the skin or on top of the skin?

If he's still moving around ok he probably isn't in that much pain (if any). Still might be worth going to the vets just to confirm what it is. If it isn't a tumour then maybe it can be treated without an operation

Its under the skin from what I can see, pea sized (but as he's tiny himself, it looks big) I'm going to keep an eye on him until tuesday-see if there's any change. If its not bothering him, I know he's 'old' for the type of hamster he is. If its any worse/causing him any visible problems I will take him to the vet
thanks for your reply :)
