In a sequel to the Total Emergency programme, I was in a conversation at Doncaster racecourse this afternoon with an official who once served with South Yorkshire Police. I brought up the name of "Bobby Jack" and he immediately replied "John Mason"!
I just wondered if anyone remembers the former PC who was a central character around the Town Hall and the tardis, then on Surrey Street, in the 60s and maybe before? - "Bobby Jack" was indeed the Town Hall bobby.

A Gentleman was PC Mason, a real professional.
He was very accommodating regarding parking on Surrey St, especially if like me you worked for one of the major utilities.
There is still room in today's society for such Policeman, but times and the Police have changed, so alas we will see them no more.

To me PC Mason was the epitome of the typical English bobby. His imposing physical presence was always to be seen around the Town Hall area. Whether sorting out a traffic problem or giving directions to vistors to the city, he did so in a friendly manner. He always seemed to be in control of the situation. I think people had that re-assurance of wellbeing seeing him around, much like the old village bobby of years gone bye.

Couldn't agree more with the two follow-ups. There is a shot of the PC in question on Part 3 of City on the Move (after abt 5 mins) if people aren't sure about whom we are speaking, "Bobby Jack" turns up near his Town Hall beat.

Hi CHAIRBOY,
You've beaten me to it. That is exactly how I always remembered him. He was such an iconic figure around the Town Hall, they daren't have have missed him out of the film. Plus he was one of the people who kept the city on the move!

Yes, I remeber him well, I took over from John when he retired. He taught me as much as he could but he was a hard man to follow. He was a gentleman.

Did you learn to keep your sandwiches in your helmet from him ?
