View Full Version : Which support bands have you seen blow the headliners off stage?
happyhippy 23-01-2009, 02:39 Following on from another thread, which bands have you seen who were the support act, who were much better than the headliners?
I remember seeing Skid Row in '89 as an underage kid at the City Hall supported by Vain. Seb Bach had one of his temperamental nights as I recall, though they were very good, but Vain were monstrously good that night. I still say that 'No Respect' is one of the finest albums of that time and genre.
There must be other bands which I've seen who fit that category, but who can you think of?
cgksheff 23-01-2009, 08:58 Didn't "blow them off the stage", but Queen did a damn good job when supporting Mott the Hoople.

RegularJohn 23-01-2009, 10:57 James Brown was wwwwwaaaayyyyy better then the red Hot Chilli Peppers when he supported them at manchester, it should of been other way around.
Saw Eagles Of Death Metal supporting Har Mar Superstar (those that dont know should check him out, specially the vodka advert), Eagles were better but Har Mar was fun.
Saw Chemical Brothers and Secret Machines were supporting them and i thought they were alot better, know omst folk wont agree
Saw the Deftones being supported by A Perfect Circle....APC were sooooo much better than night. Since then the Deftones have been amazing though.
Also Sepultura in a double-billing with In Flames at Corp....Sep were on first and totally blew IF away.
leviathan13 23-01-2009, 11:31 Well, I've paid £40 to see Testament supporting Judas Priest in Feb.
Don't get me wrong, I like Priest, and MegaDave who are supporting as well are classic (even if it is just Mustaine and his band), but Testament are awesome live!
Bloomdido 23-01-2009, 11:33 Van Halen, Black Sabbath Sheffield City Hall. Sabbath didn't even do an encore.
Stereophonic 23-01-2009, 11:46 BRMC supporting the Killers. BRMC are so much the better band
Mattenmurg 23-01-2009, 11:54 Scissor Sisters supporting Duran Duran. I think I wanted '80's Duran Duran. They were still good tho but I finally had to admit, Le Bon can't sing too hot live.
NEKRO138 23-01-2009, 12:27 BRMC supporting the Killers. BRMC are so much the better band
They really are. They should play the last album all the way through as their set. That's cause some upset for the Killers fans. Hopefully.
ohmyword 23-01-2009, 13:08 BRMC supporting the Killers. BRMC are so much the better band
Or you could've just stayed at home listening to Jesus and Mary Chain albums!
NEKRO138 23-01-2009, 13:17 Or you could've just stayed at home listening to Jesus and Mary Chain albums!
That would work for me.
NEKRO138 23-01-2009, 13:41 At one Leeds festival I went to, The Killers were above Queens of the Stoneage. Which was a travesty.

True! Why are they even on the same day?!?!
ohmyword 23-01-2009, 14:05 True! Why are they even on the same day?!?!
What are you suggesting Mattenmurg - that all music at festivals gets compartmentalised? Only the "electro" bands on one day, then "medium to heavy rock" on another day, with a final day of "Norwegian Black Metal"?! Surely the whole point of a festival is to go and see lots of different bands of many genres. Unless you're going to a genre specific festival, such as Download or Tribal Gathering, you should expect diversity!
THAT'S why they were on the same day.
Oh, and Killers are a hell of a lot more popular than the dirgetastic QOTSA! No travesty there!

More popular yes, more inkeeping with headlining group The Pixies? No. More capable of producing an hour of entertainment with just one album out? No. My own personal loathing for The Killers (and joking) aside, I think this is usually the worst 'crime' of a festival, when they put a band with less material in a longer slot than a band with more material. Queens get a lot of stick, I know, but I think they're great and quite unique.
And they blew Killers offstage. Which is the point of the thread. Not how popular they are.

The point I was making is that there isn't a theme at such a festival, therefore being "inkeeping" with the headline group doesn't come into it. Number of albums out is irrelevant too - it's all about the here and now. I saw Manic Street Preachers headline Leeds festival on the same day (and thus in a longer slot than) as Gary Numan. Sure, Numan has more years in the business, and more albums out, but there was more demand for the Manics at the time. Obviously, whether a band is "more entertaining" than another one is purely subjective, but there is absolutely no reason to put a band lower on a bill / in a shorter slot purely on the basis of number of releases. I think the majority of people would be displeased if Arctic Monkeys got a half hour slot at a festival, and Travis got an hour (for example!).
Anyway, as for the subject of the thread - er...I was blown away by The Faint when they supported Placebo at the Octagon a few years ago. Molko's mob were a joke!

That's a shame I like Placebo but admittedly haven't seen them for ages. I don't know what to make of The Faint. I can see them being good live.

I used to love Placebo. Alas, it seemed they were going through the motions on this tour. Definitely didn't have the excitement of previous times. The Faint were really energetic. Actually, the singer broke the guitarists arm (literally!) with his crazy dancing!
EdnaKrabappe 23-01-2009, 23:10 Not blow them off the stage but I saw We are scientists with Kaiser chiefs last year and loved it, feeder with stereophonics, blood red shoes with young knives, the feeling with the charlatans.

I only went to that gig to see Vain!!!! I met Davey and the boys about a week before and they were such great guys!!! I remember we introduced them to Scotch eggs!!! LOL Also Tyketto supporting White Lion.
40summat 24-01-2009, 07:26 Stiff little fingers supporting Tom Robinson Band at the city hall.
Late 70s i think.
shanes teeth 24-01-2009, 09:09 Billy Brag supporting the Pogues at Mancheter 2007.Didn't exactly blow them off stage (who could?) but was fantastic.A great choice of support act.

I was at that gig too, the first night of Skid Row's first European tour I believe, and although Vain were very good so were Skid Row so I wouldn't say that they were blown off stage in any way at all.
RegularJohn 24-01-2009, 18:42 At one Leeds festival I went to, The Killers were above Queens of the Stoneage. Which was a travesty.
It was a travesty putting Queens on before them, even worse for killers was putting them between Queens and The Pixies. 2 of the greatest live bands and then the killers hhhmm
Killers are more popular then Queens but i dont base what music i listen too off its popularity. Plus you have to remember....take that are more popular, theres always someone more popular then another band, its there substance and what they do that makes a band, and Queens do a hell of alot more then the killers
1970 or 1971 at the City Hall Van Der Graaf Generator were well upstaged by the support acts, Lindisfarne and Genesis.
Classic Rock 25-01-2009, 13:52 I was also at that Vain/Skid Row gig and although it's a long long time ago, do remember Vain being extremely good.
More recently I saw Kip Winger supporting Toby Jepson at the Corp. Kip did an acoustic set and totally blew Toby off the stage. He was spot on with each song he did and interracted with the crowd. Toby's diction was poor and he just muffled his way through the songs he did. I'd much rather watch Kip any day to Toby now.
