Sadly on the 23rd of dec we had to have one of our dogs put down due to cancer. The one that is left has changed she grazes all day brings a mouth full of food from bowl that is in the kitchen to the lounge to eat it. She sleeps alot , ignores me , refuses to go outside (unless for a walk),she stores all her chews . I wonder if she is missing the other dog and would it be a good idea to have another?

Yes and yes -but i'm just sentimental.
My youngest dog missed the old male when he passed away - loosing the others since hasn't affected her.
We now have a new male in the house abd she is like a spring chicken.

My neighbours had a similar problem when they had to have one of their boxers put down, the one that was left was drooping about, obviously lost without her chum. Sounds daft, but they bought her a nice, cuddly teddy bear, so she had something to snuggle up to in her bed, and it certainly seemed to help her.

Another dog may or may not be a good idea. It could help her or she could get upset at an interloper, sorry I know that's not very helpful, but dogs are such individuals that it can be impossible to say how they'd react.

I certainly wouldn't consider getting another one this soon, I think dogs (and cats) do go through a grieving process, like people do, she probably needs a bit of time to adjust.

I'd stop the grazing and carrying the food about though - if she gets into the habit, it'll be different to make her stop. Food down in the kitchen for 15 minutes, door shut so that she can't trail it into another room. If she hasn't eaten it all after 15 minutes, then take it away from her. I have a friend with a dog that carries her food about, and leaves it all over the house, and you're forever standing on something and squashing it into the carpet.

Good luck.

My dog Rusty pined for Zak when he passed away at 19 years old. Rusty hid all his toys and bones . He slept alot and seemed to sulk but after a few weeks he cheered up especially when Pippa a beagle friend came to stay with my mum. He did get back to normal after that.
